Cute, almost too much so. Do the locals pronounce it My lan or Milan (like in Italy)?

I think it's My-lan?!?!

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

That looks like a nice town

Milan, MI is better!  Not rly that's a lie, nice town.

MY-lan

Very nice photo spread.  There is also some pretty countryside around there, with the Vermillion River (I think) valley winding around the north side of the town.

Great village square and commercial architecture for a town of only 1445 residents (per wikipedia).  Historically Milan prospered in the mid-1800's due to a ship canal that connected it to the Huron River for access to Lake Erie, allowing the town to serve as a port for local farmers and a center for building lake schooners.  The canal collapsed in 1868, and Milan never grew much as a town after that.  Milan is home to the Melon Festival and, of course, the Melon Queen (my what nice... melons you have).

Good heavens! It's gorgeous!

It's pronounced My-Lan (as in eye).  It is about 3 miles South of Turnpike exit 118, the Cedar Point exit.  The pictures shown here are great, but they are only of downtown.  if you were to travel South out of town you would find many beautiful Victorian homes.  Outside of being the birthplace of Thomas Edison, Milan's other claim to fame, as mentioned earlier, is that it was at one time the 2nd largest grain shipping port in the world! It also has a large museum complex detailing not only Thomas Edison, but also Milan's history.  In general it is a sleepy, middleclass town, where everyone knows everyone else. The best pizza in Northcentral Ohio (No Joke!) is at Jim's Pizza Box! The Melon Festival is the biggest event of the year, and the only time you can get Toft's Cantelope Ice Cream!  I would respectfully disagree that Milan, Michigan is better.  You could argue the Milan, Mi has the dragstrip....but 5 miles southeast of Milan, Oh is Summit Motorsports park.  I've been to both and trust me, Summit is much, much better.  As for things to do in Milan, you simply need to drive 12 miles North to Sandusky, and we all know the fun that can be had there!  I will admit, I am a bit bias in my assessment of Milan, Oh, but what do you expect from someone who grew up there?

Milan looks like a very well maintained example of small town Ohio, I love it.  Great pictures, I love cities connected to historical figures such as Edison.  Superb!

if i remember correctly Milan is straight up true Firelands territory, meaning the city was completely settled and founded by those reparations folks from New England.

Well you didn't answer the most burning question: what's the story behind the Milan Wonder Bar?

Though I frequent the establishment whenever I make it back home, I don't know much history.  I know it's been around forever and the facade shown above was only recently "Discovered" behind some old siding.  Inside, there isn't much too it, a bar, some tables, a jukebox.  It's were to go to rub elbows with the locals.....I don't know where the Wonder comes in.

Good to see the Invention restaurant is there. A few years ago my dad had some business thing at Sawmill resort. So I got stuck going around with the wives. While they enjoyed quiche at a place called "Gingerbread Junction," I scarfed down a cheeseburger and fries at the Invention. It actually is a pretty nice town. Is there still a glut of antique shops?

^I didn't really notice that many antique shops and it looked like the Invention was closed.

There are a LOT of antique stores in town.  Mostly owned by the same family.  The 3rd picture and 10th picture are of 2 of the antique stores.

The Invention is still open; and some nice older homes can be found along South Main and South Center streets (South Edison Drive, also).  Also I believe that all buildings on the town square have a 100% no-vacancy rate; or at least a couple of years ago they did.

zipsrifle............I will have to disagree..........Pizza, Sub's, and Suds in Monroeville has the best pizza in NC Ohio!!! :)

By the way, are you an Edison grad?

Whoa, that was a surprise.  Great looking town, and in such good too.  I love your tours of smaller places ink,  thanks.

Reminds me a little of Lebanon, Ohio (pronounced Lebanan nor Lebanon--as in the country). ;)

Yes I am.  Was back for the Melon Festival this past weekend, entered my kid in the cutest baby contest.  She didn't win, but I think it was due to the fact we now reside in the state North of Ohio.

The Invention is still open

Score. Great place.

Just watch out for the Milan PD.....they like to sit in the alley behind the Invention and catch speeders on 113 and 250........gotta love small town police....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

What are you doing in Milan anyway? Norwalk has a downtown Giant Eagle!

Ouch.......you had to bring that up!

lol as odd as it sounds, it was quicker for me to go through milan to get to my job in norwalk, even though i have a norwalk address...........and i lived in a different school system as well (one of those areas where 20 different political boundaries meet lol)

haha, I don't need to worry. It's been at least five years since I was there. Seems like yesterday, though. It was certainly preferable to the quiche at Gingerbread Junction which I was supposed to have eaten. :-P
