musky, is this along the lines of what you were thinking?

That's close. I guess I was picturing a more defined image of the night lights. Not sure where to find something like that

Uh... Ohio the "cow" state!

oops

ok, I made this before the homage condition was made.

Working from some traditional American imagery towards building towards the future ?

Although, I kinda like the cow thing.

i'll have to say that the symbolism was lost on me.

- applies to everyone -

You might want to avoid too much graphical detail on the letters /images.  I have a feeling that when it gets shrunk down to postage stamp size at the top of the page, it may look a bit frantic.

There's no way I'm going to do a design for this but I was thinking if somebody could do a silhouette of the Carew Tower, Key Tower, and Huntington Tower [three distinctive buildings] (or perhaps Terminal/Carew/LeVeque) and under it, "Urban Ohio" or something, that would be interesting.  Kinda, sorta, like the Skyline Chili logo (but this time, with all three big cities represented) but well...better.

I'm in the process of combing the flag and a silhouetted skyline.  I was sidetracked by Unibroue last night so give me an extra day or so...

combining!

combining!

Isn't there a thread on here with all of the skylines combined?  You could run it as a ribbon across the bottom of the logo -- or maybe like a beauty contest sash across the image of the state.  Sort of like Miss Ohio without the cleavage.

Well that's no fun.  :|

Yeah but then Dayton Lovers like me are gonna feel so hurt...so hurt...

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, I mean, as long as the graphic shows what one can expect in Ohio as a whole (and there's certainly many tall skyscrapers in various Ohio cities). It would be hard to represent every single urban area in Ohio in one graphic, unless the graphic is entirely abstract.

Design Challenge:

NO representation of the state map.

NO representation of a skyline.

Go!

If I make a graphic using photos will I have to worry about copywrite infringement? Even if it's only part of someone's picture, or manipulated slightly with filters and such?

^Yes, if the copyright holder is so inclined to come after you.

How about a silhouette with 8 buildings, one each from Ohio's 8 metros. Can't get any more "Urban Ohio" than that.

But i just happend to take the same picture from the same angle ;)

Add a flag, a state map, and a crazy ass filter and we've got a winner.

I don't think we can have a specific skyline.  No offense, but all metros in the state have buildings that can pass with a generic rectangle, plus throw in a few signature/obvious buildings that indicate ohio.

I was thinking the same thing as an idea for a logo. And I have a nighttime satellite picture but the image is very small. I'll try my hand at a logo using it.

So these won't work?

Like I said yesterday...

It wouldn't be appropriate to use the skylines combined image or anything with identifiable structures. UrbanOhio is about all Ohio cities, large and small. In fact, Chris told us at the Dayton meet that one of the deciding factors for starting the site was that there wasn't/isn't a site for Ohio's small and midsize cities. The big C's all have numerous.

The other skylines are represented in my graphic. You just can't see them behind those of the Big 3.

Design Challenge II:

No Red state

No Blue state

I'm totally going to try and get a few ideas out there but right now I am busy designing a poster for Miami's Lecture Series right now  :-(

Indeed.  Though it'd be nice for a representation of all sizes (perhaps Chillicothe's Courthouse; Akron's First National Tower; and Columbus' State Capitol).

^A design like that sounds like it will be getting too busy or too large for many of the purposes identified (business cards and so on).  I don't know...but often times less is more when it comes to a logo.

Dang it!

There goes my scratch-n-sniff logo idea.

It isn't too busy if it's silhouetted and nicely done.

Just so we're clear...

lo·go

–noun, plural -gos.

1. Also called logotype. a graphic representation or symbol of a company name, trademark, abbreviation, etc., often uniquely designed for ready recognition.

well done, you rose to the challenge

OK here's what I did real quick in a half hour.  Still leaves something to be desired but it is something that can be worked with.

Thoughts MayDay?  Anyone?

Thanks for posting those UncleRando, it's giving me more ideas

Let's not abandon that "scratch and sniff" logo idea so quickly.  Think of the possibilities!!!

Thank you for posting this Rando!

Observe these logos, people. They're the culmination of trillions of designer-hours worth of hard work, but I only ask you to observe a few principles in action:

1) Simplicity.

2) Recognizability.

3) Scalability.

4) Symbolism, i.e., no attempt  to portray the physical nature of the product.

5) Ability to work in one color.

There's a ton of other stuff going on here, but those are the most basic principles of logo-ology.

I just made up that word I think.

What about something like this? It's not perfect, and there would be color, but I wanted to post it to get some feedback. I'm also working on several other ideas. This is just the only one that I have anywhere near done.

I like the symbolism, but I think people would immediately think it's a corn cob when driving on the road.  Maybe if you make the building more distinguishable or something.

Corn fed.

I like the symbolism, but I think people would immediately think it's a corn cob when driving on the road.  Maybe if you make the building more distinguishable or something.

Cool. I appreciate that. I definitely welcome any criticism/comments. It's still a work in progress, so I know it's not perfect.

If people hate it, I welcome that as well.

I think the corn is overscaled in comparison to the building - I'm seeing a building being attacked by a mutant cornhusk, not a building emerging from an agricultural past.

Ergo, a perfectly articulated Ohio-appropriate socio-political statement.

I was going for what MayDay said. :) I definitely would like to tinker with it.

BTW, I don't hate it. It goes well with my cow logo Mayday made for me.

here are a 2 I made.  The flag/skyline one can be customized if necessary.  There's the classic red, white, and blue, timeless b/w, and the purple/grey one that represents the diversity of our state.  It abstracts the flag a bit, de-emphasizing the rural associations with ohio.

the dot one is a bit more euro?-for lack of a better word...highlighted are the major urban areas of the state in addition to our 2 amazing bodies of H2O.  Anyways, let me know what you think...

Not bad, not bad (though the last one scares me, for some reason).

I thought it looked more like a sampler - which would be kinda cool, too, as it would definitely show diversity along with the oldstyle charm kinda thing.

Yeah..I'm digging just about all of those.  I think I like the red/white/blue one the best though...the 'euro' looking one is also quite interesting.
