I like the bottom left, black background with white foreground and text. What font did you use for the "URBANOHIO.COM" text?

Fourth and a half... and I do not have a problem with this red/blue mix.

Fifth - that's fantastic.  Probably not for a "logo" qua logo, but what a fantastic idea and execution!

Would it be ok if I get the file.  Is it an .ai file?  I was wondering if you would mind if I tweaked it a bit?  It looks really good though, but I would like to try something

I did the drawing in cad and photoshoped it--is that allowed for the contest???  Anyways, if you want the cad file, that's fine--otherwise I can make it in illustrator for you later today?

Here's a few I put together. As with everything I make, I'm not crazy about any of them, but here they are. I'm sure I'll mess around some more this weekend.

I'm still a fan of this second one; its colorful, easy to read, and relatively simple.

The only issue I have with this, is it will be used on all pages, including the forum, right? That would severely increase the height of the title graphic bar and force more content down the page. It wouldn't be that big of an issue on the main page, where it can be vertically aligned to the left and have a menu option to the right of it, but you can't really do that without a lot of work on a SMF forum.

I think the logo we have right now is better than all the current proposals.  I never saw anything wrong with the current logo, though.

Yeah, there's a very classy feel to the current one that I'd miss...

I made a few changes with the logo. I am trying to give it more of an urban "feel". Whatever logo we go with I think we should stay away from blues and reds and greens. To me "Urban" is different shades of gray, it's bricks-concrete and steel. I think the logo should reflect that. (also Seicer-the font is called "Bright". But I did a little surgery on the Urban part of the font-thnx)

Love the bottom right one!

I love it as a design but it just looks too much like a middle-America state up against Ohio and leaves me confused. No one should be confused looking at a logo. "UrbanOhio" should also have more of presence in the graphic. It's the name of the site and should stand out more than anything, unless a UO symbol is standing out more than anything. I don't see a proper sense of hierarchy in that graphic.

I'm not loving that Wyoming has surgically attached itself to Ohio's western border... and gold stripes on black backgrounds should be left to Steelers uniforms.

Is there a way to do the same logo type all within the Ohio outline but on two lines as

URBAN

OHIO

The triangular top of the tower could be the A in URBAN, while the rest of the tower could form the I in OHIO...

I HATE opinions!  :whip:

Ironic that that is, in fact, an opinion.

Hmm, did I miss it?  Wasn't jpop the person that started this?

Where is his logo design?

Why the rectangle? Also, I'd be careful about having the building standing in for an "a"; convention makes me want to read it as on "i."

Loving this the most so far. My suggestion to make it less vertical: cheat the flag. Squish it a little; amplify the radiating bars even more than you have. This is the first good use I've seen for Ohio's oddball pennant flag. Very smart. And again: I'm TOTALLY digging the bridge. Don't change nothing there.

Again: I love Mister Urban (or Pan Urbaniak for our friends in Cleveland). With a couple of tasteful refinements, this could be my favorite.

I'd honestly like that last one better if they got rid of the faux-smile.

Sure... only not so crooked... and shaved.

I think the three shown are all good, but not really logo quality.

They would make excellent posters, bumper stickers and t-shirts.

Actually that logo didn't originally have the smile but I always see 2 eyes in the word Ohio so I had to see what it would be like. But here's the Ohio guy as not a guy, just as an Ohio...

Boo musky and ColDayMan for wiping the smile right off our face.

(Put it back! Put it back!)

I really love the type and color of this logo. Great job in those departments. I would just really love to see some logos that would actually push beyond the very thin veneer of the whole state map/state flag idea. A few of the ideas that sprung from this are nice, but it would be great to see some inventiveness.

Did you have a problem with the cornhusk idea? I haven't heard anything until now, so .. maybe you need to actually voice your opinion.

Quite honestly, I'm sick of your petty childishness. I suggested changing the logo. I didn't mean to offend, which I've already said numerous times, but that doesn't seem to be enough for some reason. If you were happy with the logo (as many other people have already voiced that they are as well), then that's fine! I don't have a problem with keeping it if the majority rules in favor of it. I just wanted to see something more than mediocre, which in my opinion plagues much of Cleveland design and frustrates me. I don't pretend to be the best designer, believe me. But at least I try to take more than 5 minutes to think of a concept behind a design, and I wish more people would.

If you want to continue this in a private message, I'd be happy to.

I appreciate the exchange of ideas.

I thought it was creative but urban and corn should never co-exist. What is Ohio? (besides corn). Hmm. Maybe someone wants to do something with a cardinal or buckeye?

Maybe someone wants to do something with a cardinal or buckeye?

Yuck, please don't!

I don't think this needs to be continued in PM. The reason I haven't commented about your concept is because I'm waiting to see what else people have to offer. I mentioned cle2032's because I was genuinely impressed and more importantly, thought he had a good grasp on what's needed.

You didn't offend me by suggesting that the logo be changed, though your approach was a bit rude. We've already discussed that issue privately and believe me I've moved past it (otherwise I would have told you to sod off and I certainly wouldn't have allowed a contest on the forum to create a new logo). I'm glad you did, because we've been able to get more people involved and have a sense of ownership for the forum. It's nice to see so many people interested, even if they aren't submitting concepts.

Quite honestly, what I'm sick of (and this isn't reflective of my opinion of you, but it applies to this specific situation) of designers who deride others' work, but when it comes to what they've actually produced - either we don't see anything, or what we do see isn't much better than what they've derided. What really irks me is when presented with criticism of their work, they react with hypersensitivity. You called the current logo "boring and uninspired" which I admit it is, but on the same token, I can't bust your chops about your concept? Don't get me wrong, the cornhusk concept is an interesting angle and I could see how it might work, given some adjustments. Frankly, I felt the execution was a little lacking with the skyscraper being a bit too syringe-like (the stroke needs to be bumped up overall), the husk being hard to identify, and I'm not a fan of the font (though that's a personal preference, not a design comment).

Now, what I've offered is constructive criticism that you can take and maybe refine your concept - I didn't say it was "boring"; I didn't say it was "uninspired"; I didn't say it was stupid or anything of the sort. Am I making sense?

I wish my other computer was working properly! I don't have the adobe programs on here.

Jpop, not speaking for anybody but myself, I appreciate your contribution. Is it my favorite? Well, some opinions are more like a$$holes than others.

Moving on...

I graduated from CCS in Detroit with a BFA in graphic communcation. You're right: whoop-de-fu*king-do. But the single most valuable thing I learned in art school was this: don't take ANY criticism personally. Love your own ideas, but be ready for others to not. Defend yourself, but always be open to the reality that others will always ALWAYS see something you don't, and sadly, almost always, be correct in their judgement.

One more opinon: I've always disliked the UO logo. Good riddance!

I thought it was creative but urban and corn should never co-exist.

That's fine. I really don't want to make this all about my logo. I feel stupid about all of this. But honestly, I didn't receive any criticism until now. And even that was really passive-aggressively. So .. if I don't hear from people that it's bad, how am I to know?

Anyway, the reason that I wanted to push the design of the logo further is because I really love this forum. I log on all day from work, and quite frankly, I'm constantly afraid that I'm going to get in trouble because I'm almost literally reading stuff on here. Like right now. I really look forward to the posts here, and I so value the fact that this is a place where people can come and post opinions about some great cities in Ohio.

I want people to know more about this and how great these cities really are. I just thought it would be fun to really push the look and make it into something that will spark outsiders' interest because I think good design can do amazing things. Right now, in my opinion, I don't think we're there. What ideas do we want to communicate?

Do I have all the answers? No. But one thing this contest could do is create a design collaborative (where it's not so much competitve as collaborative) and inspire something really terrific. If it doesn't, that's okay, too. I'd rather aim high and fail than play it safe.

But if other people aren't interested, then that's okay. Maybe we could even create a thread where fellow graphic designers can post various projects and get feedback from fellow forumers? I would love something like that.

Yes. And I really appreciate your contributions and what you have to say. I need to work on the way that I offer criticism. Oftentimes, I'm not sensitive to other people's feelings because my opinion is more important (that's meant sarcastically, of course). I don't mean to, but it happens because I'm just a really blunt person. But in the future, I'll try to offer criticisms much more constructively and positively. The last thing I want to do is bring this forum down.

So .. in short .. GIMME A HUG!!! :-D

^No otter hugs? Hehehe
