I'd like to invite everyone to show photos of the Dayton skyline from their favorite vantage point. Well, it doesn't even really have to be your favorite I guess but let's see it! I got the idea from these comments http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=13556.0. I'll get you started with this usually missed spot. I'm not sure this is my top but it is one of the best. It's from a street around Orville Wright Elementary and Smithville.

 

 

disclaimer: I photoshopped a light post out of this photo. 5/3 Tower was behind it so you'll notice it's missing from this pic.

I KNEW something was missing from that pic! 

It's nothing unusual, but I'm a fan of the spot in the first set of monte's pictures in the linked thread, just across the river or on the Riverside Drive bridge.

I don't have anything as good a quality as that, but I appreciate the views from East Dayton, as its nice to see the hills of Dayton featured.

Dang PigBoy, I remember seeing those pics along time ago on here but I gotta just say that those are some pretty ridiculous shots. Still not my fav angle of the city but you caught a ton of drama in the lighting.

 

Jeff, nice spot. Once again, I wish I knew more about the westside. Is Germantown St. as steep as 3rd or Burkhardt?

 

 

I can't understand why Dayton doesn't have grand homes with views of downtown on the few hills that it does have.

Sorta off topic but I was just curious what the state of Dayton was? Its a town whose look and skyline reminds me a lot of the town I live in now (Grand Rapids, MI) which is experiencing quite a renaissance.

 

Eh, the city's downtown is "coming back" but the region is certainly not anytime soon.

 

The shot going down Main Street has always been one of my favs (meaning, from Hillcrest to Santa Clara).  But definately the best shot is from Rt. 35.

Okay, and here's this one. IMHO the best angle you're gonna get (though this isn't the best shot of it).

 

 

Jeff's shot from DAI is giving it a run for it's money though. It shows most of the buildings clustered together really well. Too bad 40 West 4th isn't showing.

I wish I had taken this pic. It was from the Metropolitan website. Definitely one of the best pics you're going to find of Dayton. I'd die to have the hi-res of this and frame it.

 

 

One pic that I'm surprised I never see is downtown with the Hydrobowl in the forefront. I meant to get one the other day…

I had an aquaintance who had an upper floor of the Metropolitan (AKA Dayton Towers), with that view.  He was an organist and pianist, and had a baby grand piano in his apartment.  He was quite talented, too, having performed in those Soirees Musicales concerts they have at the Art Institute.

 

Anyway, he invited me up to his apartment to show me the view (knowing I was into things like this).  I was impressed with that piano, and he decided to play some tunes...

 

....so as the sun was setting over the Dayton skyline, you know that late afternoon golden glow, darkening, he played this great impressionist version of Gershwins Preludes, and you know how Gershwin has sort of a "city" or "urban" sound to his music, well his rendition really played that up, a great "soundtrack" to a great skyline view during one of the most evocative times of the day.

More like Burkhardt...a long slope down.

 

Dayton did have mansions with city views, in the 19th Century. These were not on these "far" hills we are seeing here, but on that rise closer to town, where the land drops down to the bottoms of the rivers.  Like up on Grafton Hill, or St Annes' Hill.  Also on Summit Street on the west side.

 

The view then would have been of church steeples and factory chimneys, not skyscrapers.

ForeverGlow, I think I'd agree with you on the angle you said is best (your photo from the highway ramp).  If only there were an easy way to get a picture of it, or at least have a moment to enjoy the view!

I like any view that includes the YMCA, it seems to get left out in many. My favorite is probably from across the river as well; it should be interesting to see what that view looks like once Caresource is completed.

 

I think Forever Glow's preferred view is what Channel 7 uses.

Yeah, I'm not sure if there's a way to get around there without risking your life. It may be possible though. Here's the spot ColdayMan is talking about from 35. Definitely a pretty choice pic.

 

 

I wish Dayton had some neon logos on the tops of the buildings. I miss Mead. It gives a city a little character and pride. I love the new Macy's sign in Cincy. Does anyone know if Caresource will have one?

I have to drive 75 everyday for work now...and I have realized that I think my favorite spot for a skyline pic would be very close to where the old Rey Rey/clock tower building is along 75. Acutally maybe 100 feet north of that building looking at the bridge going to Sinclair and on into downtown, but I have no clue how I would get that photo, unless my car broke down right there on 75 or I risked my life! :-) But I look at if everyday from that spot  (going north on 75) and it's awesome

Something at UD or the cemetary (Woodland?) I assume? I'm pretty sure that is the southside.

I'm 99.9% certain that's from Miami Valley Hospital. Here's a few more from that spot from istockphoto.com. And yes, it's even better at night.

Well I gathered that, but from where?  A top floor, the roof or a parking garage?  How do I duplicate that photo?  Do I need to know someone or do I just keep driving in circles up to the top parking deck?

There is a tall parking garage at MVH you can just to up and get it.

There are two parking garages at MVH that will give you a good view of downtown.  The Apple Street garage and the one closer to Brown Street & Wyoming. 

 

I think i took that one from the Brown & Wyoming one, as I wanted some good shots of South Park, too. 

 

Incidentally there is a pretty good view of the Woodland Cemetery/UD area from up there, too.

It's Dayton.  They'd probably serve you sweet tea at the top of the garage.

Yeah, you can get some great shots of UD/Brown St. from MVH. It looks especially good during fall...which isn't far off.

Not sure where I got this pic but it's from the Hydrobowl (Eastwood Park). I like how the reflections in the water continue kinda endlessly.

For as much grief as people give Dayton about those fountains, I really like them. The laser show is a little goofy but the fountains separately are pretty cool.
