Wasn't in my city, but was in Columbus yesterday.

Scene: Sitting at the outdoor bar at Smith & Wollensky in Easton (please don't ask), around 8pm.  Two women, probably in their early to mid 30s walk across the traffic circle in front. Holding hands.

Guy 1: "Wow, would you look at that."

Woman 1: "I guess it's 2-for-1!"

Guy 2: "No comment. Just nooo comment! Wow."

...these utterance were not made in exactly flattering tones.

I shot a glare across the bar and got up. For something that in today's world is not really an abnormal event,  I'd like to think that there wouldn't be a similar reaction if this happened on, say, East 4th Street, but I can't kid myself.

What's blue cheese olive?  Is it a dressing?  Or is it like an olive with blue cheese in the pit?  Where is it served?

srsly?  It's an olive stuffed with blue cheese. These have been around for like 10 years now, when the martini-bar trend got started.

In a Downtown cafe, "that was after 7/11...9/11, after 9/11."

And I don't do blue cheese.

Overheard in a Short North coffeeshop, a young local woman who can't stand suburban visitors at Gallery Hop *middle-aged suburban accent that sounded upper-midwest*:

"Oh, look at that Bob, that girl lives right above the store; isn't that crazy? Oh my, gay people live here and look at all those kids on their bikes!

So it was the girl acting like a suburbanite woman? hehe

Two drunk ladies at the bus stop with me in Milwaukee.  Picture two really rugged women wearing Packers sweatshirts and really thick "Up Nord" or "Fargo" accents.  I'll call them Sandy and Debbie for clarity.

Sandy It's gettin cold out.

Debbie Yah, did ya hear it's gonna snow on Friday?

Sandy What?  It's May, right?

Debbie April, no wait yeah May.

Sandy Yah, all that's supposed to happen in April.

Debbie Yup

Sandy Man has messed with time many times before.  It might not even be May.

Debbie It aint?

Sandy How are we supposed to know?

Debbie I don't know, I just listen to that 64 channel

Sandy Is that dat weather channel?

Debbie No, the christian channel.

Sandy They tell you the weather on the christian channel?

Debbie No, they tell me if its April or May.

Then the bus came...

Well, it wasn't said but within the past week I've seen two pregnant women smoking.  These were the first two I can ever recall seeing in person.  Sad.

A sad one from a bathroom stall: "She doesn't know they're letting her go. Do you know who would be best to tell her?"

ooooooooh Lawd.  I was on the train and these three kids seated to my left started talking (in Spanish).  I normally tune others out, but I hadn't yet put on my headphone and all of sudden, I hear, "You know when you're Puerto Rican or Dominican when...."

  • If you grew up scared of something called "El Cuco"

  • If you ever left grass for the camels on January 6th
  • If you've ever used your nose or lips to point
  • If corn flakes are pronounced "Con Flay"
  • You know the sound of your mom/abuelas chancletas
  • If you've referred to Don Francisco as "Tio"

The Friday before Memorial Day I was walking past the northeast corner of Detroit & West 25th in Cleveland when 2 county workers (at the bridge maintenance facility with a flat bed truck) were talking.  It seemed as if one of the guys was training a new guy when he said "The key is to look busy...but not too busy" as he was just pushing existing mulch around.  And we wonder why our local govts are broke.

I know of city workers who park their truck somewhere and sleep.

^I worked for a city maintenance department for a short period of time.  I witnessed the same.  I've also seen maintenance workers taking "breaks" at Settler's Landing near the end of the day.  I wouldn't be upset at this behavior if the parks were adequately maintained.  But instead we have many parks with non-working fountains, lights, net-less tennis courts, overgrown weeds, etc...

Same thing happens with maintenance guys in the private sector all the time.

But, not at the expense of the items Hootenany listed; a private employer would "notice" and do something about the situation.  At the end of the day the work would get done.

I agree, but in my experience it's not to near the same degree.

Not if the company is large enough.  I see this crap all the time in my company of over 20,000 employees.

It's a general management issue in a large organization that is not dependent on whether that organization is public or private.  Of course, pretty much all public organizations are very large whereas not all private ones are (although we're moving in that direction).

In my experience it is... big time.

OK guys, lets get back on topic

I was on facebook and I read this girl's status that said, "It really annoys me that Columbus has bike lanes and it really annoys me that people feel the need to use them! There is a sidewalk for a reason.. SMH," and there were comments that talked about how her and her friend just ignore the bike lanes (and drive in them I guess) and the girl responded, "I hate them! And honking does not make them move!!"

I know that this wasn't me overhearing anything, I just wanted to share this. This girl is so stupid and I am so glad that my cousin broke up with her because I can now unfriend her.

As a cyclist, I find statements such as hers really annoying. She also sounds really ignorant; its called a sidewalk for a reason. I don't know about many areas in Ohio, but I know the NYPD and even some of the "rent-a-cops" there can be pretty big a**holes about riding bicycles on sidewalks.

But anyway, I was in Target today and a woman was having a low volume phone conversation in an aisle next to me when I overheard, "Yeah, I like it and everything, but I don't know, Atlanta has too many black people for me." When I heard this, I HAD to go to see who the person was. She was white, yuppie looking, heavily tanned with fake blond hair, probably in her mid-20s, and looked and sounded very "suburban" (happy valley girl cheerleader type).

Honestly, the statement didn't really bother me, I felt more disrespected than anything. At least if you have thoughts like that (as many do), have the decency to not say it in public.

I'm not sure I agree.  You stated she was having a low volume convo.

Hell, (without knowing the context of the young lady's convo) I feel the same way about Boston, Seattle and San Fran. and I wouldn't be ashamed or embarrassed to have someone overhear me say that.

The bigger question is, would she have said that to your face.  You should have said, "Hi, I'm from Atlanta"

Overheard on the Mich Ave bus in Chicago behind me.  Picture classic midwestern Mom types...easy care spikey processed hairdos, college sweatshirts with turtle neck underneath, Filenes Basement bags that say "I just got a bargain"...etc.

Friend :  So Marlene, how is your son's new apartment, you saw it today...right...

Marlene: Oh yeah it's real nice...very simple, no brick-a-brack all around...ya know

Friend: Oh yeah, that's nice...

Say it with a strong "Fargo" midwest accent...it's funny

Wasnt sure where to put this, but if you have a crazy story like this you can also share it here.

My girlfriend is a hair dresser and she had a client who said she worked at a school in Cleveland. My girlfriend asked where and she said its on West 25th street across from the Westside market and my girlfriend was like oh so its in Ohio City. The lady had no idea what Ohio City was and then later asked what the words Ohio City and Tremont mean, and what they are to Cleveland. She also had no idea what "RTA" was. My girlfriend spent the whole time explaining and telling her about the city hahah.

Why not put this in the Off topic or "overheard" threads?  You're girlfriend should have burned this woman with a curling iron.  She's probabl one of those people that says things like, "why would anyone come to Cleveland?", "they have X thing in X city, I wish we had that in Cleveland" or complains about the city yet knows nothing about the city.

Yeah it could be moved.

And that is hilarious. But yeah my girlfriend said something about the RTA and she was like "whats rta?" So of course she had no idea what the healthline was either.

The week before someone else asked my girlfriend if the bus was scary and dangerous.

"Are you sure it's not there. Can we look again."

From Christopher Lloyd at XSport Fitness in Old Town, Chicago, two Saturday ago. I was leaving as he and a staff member were looking for his lock in the lost & found. Very funny stuff - I mean c'mon, it's Doc Brown/Judge Doom.

Or the spaced out guy he played on Taxi.

She might have been recruited from out of town by the school.

I'm sitting here in Presti's getting my work done (I know, my UO posts seem to indicate otherwise), when I hear two men in their mid-60's talking about University Circle.  One of them seems to be a medical patient here, but both have been gone a long time judging by the conversation.

GENTLEMAN NUMBER 1:  "I remember when this area used to be a complete warzone.  I can't believe what I see."

GENTLEMAN NUMBER 2: "I feel like I want to live here now.  You don't have this in Tampa..."

:-D  :drunk:

What's going on in University Circle is truly amazing.  On a related note, what is going on with some of those large, empty, crumbling buildings on the "backside" of Little Italy (the area near Euclid Avenue)?

well for one...a very recent arson fire: http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/oh_cuyahoga/fire-on-clevelands-east-side-closes-euclid-avenue

I've heard rumblings of possible demolition and construction of more townhomes -- as 26 of the 27 Coltman townhomes have sold.

BUT I'm guessing this talk will get redirected as off topic! ;)

Some 17-year-old just said to me, "There's nothing to do in Athens."

All I could say was "You might not feel that way when you get a little older."
