My wife is a teacher.

She used to work for White Hat in Cleveland.

She had no breaks during the day, and had to eat lunch standing, while teaching class.

Aultman breaks ground on hospice

$5.9 million, 12-bed facility to offer end-of-life care in home-like setting

By Cheryl Powell

Beacon Journal medical writer

The 20,000-square-foot, 12-bed hospice will offer end-of-life care in a setting ''more analogous to what would be going on at home,'' said Dr. Steven David Grossman, medical director of Aultman Hospice and Palliative Care Services.

I'm no math wiz, but $5.9 million for 12 beds seems like a bit much.

I would almost think that the Aultman-Mercy litigation deserves its own thread; certainly if the same institutions were doing battle in a bigger burb, it would warrant more attention.  (Plus it's not quite "development" news.)  It's apparently gotten ugly between the two of them, which is a shame, because they are both major civic (as well as medical) institutions in Canton and have greater potential to be flagships of the area than any old Rust Belt industrial player (except maybe Timken).

With respect to the expense per bed of 12 beds: It's ridiculous, but what's most ridiculous about it is that it's not all that ridiculous.  Or at least, not all that unusual.  Elder care is a *huge* business nationally and is even more prominent than average in Ohio; the nursing home industry owns a controlling interest in numerous members of the General Assembly.  It's really disturbing, honestly.

It may seem like a lot to invest $5.9 million in 12 beds--but every single one of those beds can yield a *massive* amount of annual revenue.

As far as the law suit, it probably does deserve to be in the city discussion, but I found it funny that the two articles were released so close in time to each other.  One in praise of the new facility then the other with some pretty staunch accusations.

As far as the price of the hospice, I can understand the cost.  They probably have some public spaces, lots of medical equipment, cost of land, etc...  I am just puzzled why we continue to build all this crap that looks the same at such an exorbitant cost.  Pretty soon NE Ohio is going to look like a model train set.  Look at what Richard Rodgers did in the same type of setting recently:

For nearly 30 years, All-America Bridge has lured suicidal people. Renovators hope new fence will be serious deterrent to jumpers

By Stephanie Warsmith

Those working on the Y-Bridge project realize it might not be feasible to design a fence that can't be scaled, but they've done their best.

At the same time, they've been challenged to balance this with other goals, including creating a product that doesn't disturb the view, is aesthetically pleasing, can be built, isn't too heavy for the bridge and stays within budget.

''Other than that, it's easy,'' said Travis Capper, another city engineer working on the project.

LAFAYETTE TWP: Federal stimulus tax-exempt bonds are being credited with helping the Chippewa Landing Resort project break ground in September.

The 90-acre-plus site, formerly known as Chippewa Lake Amusement Park, is owned by Chippewa Partners LLC, a group of developers from Arizona and California who plan to build a resort along the shoreline.

The first phase calls for construction of a Hilton Hotel with 110 rooms. A Japanese-themed spa and 42 beach and pool houses will front the hotel along the lake.

Apple store to open in Summit Mall

An Apple store will be opening in Summit Mall.

A mall representative referred questions about a new store to Apple's corporate offices, where a media representative has repeatedly said there were no announcements made about any new stores in Akron.

However, a permit was issued on June 18 for an Apple store at Summit Mall by the city of Fairlawn, said Chris Randles, building and zoning commissioner.

That would be amazing if they ever get to it. I would really like to see more shops and restaurants go in this area. It would be nice to see the whole stretch of main street populated rather than just the north and south ends. I really hope this design calls for a few water features. This should be the main feature of downtown Akron..

They just started to work on this about a month ago. I really like what they are doing to the North end of town.

Ironically, I was just down there at Northside Saturday morning to get some photos. I'll post them when I have some free time. I didn't get photos of the Cascade Mills, but of the area around the CVSR station (Ohio's busiest railroad station!).

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Thanks for posting that. I run on the path there all the time and I was wondering what was going on there...

This place is really nice to go to. You can walk your bikes through Lock 4 to connect to the towpath. Next Wednesday I read they are going to start having Jazz concerts outside. I just wish they would start to work on the interior of those buildings so there are more places to eat. Here is a link of what it is going to look like when its done and some more information on the project: http://www.ci.akron.oh.us/planning/pdf/City_of_Akron_Landmark_Building_CORF_Grant_Application_Info.pdf

Akron: the little city that can.... and does!

They need to do something to utilize this area more.  I spent 5 years in Akron and spend at least a week every year in the city for the past 10 and I didn't even know this area was there until a few years ago.  It's almost like it's hidden back there.  I'm sure part of the issue was there were always busses blocking the area off but that is fixed now.  I think the improvments to the canal just across Bowrey might help bring more traffic into this area.

From what I know these plans are scraped. I have heard there is talks about redoing the parking deck underneath and resurfacing the plaza. Also creating a better streetscape there as well. Lock 3 is the entertainment venue as of now. If there ever is development created for the green space at lock 3, Cascade plaza will take over as the main entertainment venue area.

The YMCA looks nice. Its refreshing to see all the construction going on. I hope something develops with all that empty space on the other side of rt 8.. seeing the summa garage from rt 8 makes me hope multi floor buildings start ;ining either side of rt 8 giving it a great urban feel.

I heard on the radio that this area will have enough space open for concerts and such. Seems like this will be another draw for the citizens of Akron.

Its nice now. I was down there when the hamburger fest was going on.. I liked it.. Should become an Akron area niche scene if they put the right type of eateries down there.

There was an article in the ABJ today about how EJ Thomas was running a deficit.  Seems like there are a lot of concert venues in the area, so are you thinking this would be used for Small concerts?  One thing that was done where we used to live is that they would have concerts every Tuesday during the summer with small bands.  On selected Fridays they would have a Movie.  It was a nice community gathering.

I don't think renovating the plaza would necessarily make it take over as the main entertainment venue area. If they could add a few nice restaurants/shops it would create an amazing atmosphere downtown. It would be cool to see maybe a few water features go in the plaza as well. Im thinking something sort of along the lines of a Rockefeller plaza scaled down scenario.

It looks like this is down North St., East of Howard St., going toward the new housing development that use to be Elizabeth Park Projects.

I think it could be an amazing area for small, daily Jazz or Blues Concerts, as well as a nice area for Lunch. Loc 3 is great for the bigger concerts, but this would be a great area for day to day hanging out.....

Yes this project is right on the corner of North St. and Howard St. across from the Cascade Mills Store parking.

Just found a nice rendering of the new Univeristy Park YMCA that is going in next to Akron General Hospital. It looks like it will be very nice. http://www.summahealth.org/media/15888/15889.jpg

I'm not too fond of that yellow brick they are using.  Inside should be nice though, I saw some exposed wood beams before all the walls were up.

The pictures are actually of the Lock 4 construction.. which is completed now and is host to evenings of Jazz music and such. Its quite a cozy atmosphere in the evening especailly with the sound of the water.

Involta breaks ground in Akron

Data storage company to create about 15 jobs to start, grow to 50 or 60 in depressed area

By Katie Byard

An iris-reading system is just one security element planned for the Involta LLC building that will store data for a variety of companies and institutions and promises relatively high-paying jobs in a depressed area south of downtown.

The company earlier this year revealed plans for the 46,000-square-foot facility that could eventually employ 50 to 60 people — each making $60,000 to $70,00 a year.

Sigh.  I understand the need for *some* land-use controls, but this feels like so much red tape to me.  Why exactly does (or should) Fresh Healthy Cafe need a special permit to set up a counter service restaurant?  I'd really rather see people be allowed to just buy and build, and rely on nuisance laws to stop people from building a trash-burning power plant right next to Summit Mall.

Akron developer to buy Manchester Road site from the city for hotel and shops

By Stephanie Warsmith

Beacon Journal staff writer

The dilapidated Young's Hotel will be torn down and replaced by a new hotel and retail complex, Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic said Wednesday.

Bennett Construction Management Inc. of Akron plans to buy the site from the city and redevelop it with the help of other private investors. Details of the agreement haven't been finalized, but the city will at least recoup the approximately $800,000 it has spent on the building and renovations to keep it standing, Plusquellic said.
