October 30, 20186 yr ^I visited Akron a couple weeks ago and I visited the boardwalk on Summit Lake for the first time. I was very impressed and Summit Lake is an amenity that should be used by the whole community. That said, the neighborhoods around the lake could certainly use a bit of investment and freshening up. If an investor wanted to offer a good price for people's houses, that area could be fantastically redeveloped. There is even a hill on the west side of the lake that would offer fantastic views of the lake and downtown Akron to the north.

The turnaround in new starts from 2015 is really stark--obviously that's skipping the intervening years but it's good to look back sometimes on how things used to be. I moved into downtown Akron in 2009 and out of it in 2013. It's really exciting to see a lot of the downtown development now--and even more exciting to see that it's not just downtown now and that a lot of these new developments are coming in outside of downtown.

I'm not sure that I'm overly excited about this: · $900,000 for housing and commercial building demolitions Since 2014 the county Land Bank has been putting about $2 million into residential demolitions at a clip of about 500 homes a year (in the county). At some point it would be nice to not have to do that and crack down on owners and put money into neighborhood improvements.

He believes its important the first floor should still be a Huntington branch. The regional headquarters for the former FirstMerit were moved to Cascade III and Brown said the Huntington Akron-based executives are spread across all of Huntington’s downtown buildings. ================================================== In addition to apparently being the tallest building in Akron (I actually thought the PNC tower was taller but apparently not), it's also one of the oldest. I have no idea how realistic a conversion to mixed-use would be. The location would make it one of the most walkable addresses in the city if you could rent a quality apartment there, and still with easy access to the highway (too easy, honestly, considering how little of OH-59 they took out when they had the chance to shrink that). But the windows are generally tiny and dark, and I'm not sure how much work it would take on the inside to build good housing units in there.

Huntington tower has been the tallest in the city since it was erected in the early 1930s and was originally known as the First Central Trust building. PNC tower is a close second--sometimes it looks taller depending upon your perspective in relation to the two. Huntington tower has the prestige factor going for it as Akron's tallest building and its most historically significant and recognizable skyscraper, much like the LaVeque tower in Columbus. That appeal for some might outweigh the structural drawbacks of residential units.

July 22, 20195 yr Probably one of the biggest economic/employment news items to take place in Akron in well over a decade, and in one of the most depressed corners of the metropolitan area at that--Barberton, Kenmore, and lower West Akron. To be certain, Amazon opening up a single warehouse there isn't a panacea, but there will be some economic "spillover" effect throughout these areas and within the Romig Road corridor. I imagine there will also likely be an influx of new residents and interest in creating new housing/apartment options in these places. I suspect Akron Public Schools' plans to close Kenmore High School and its general neglect of this part of the city during the Superintendency of David James will prove to have been shortsighted.

September 6, 20195 yr Its a challenging spot since the area is dominated by a bar owner that has control of 4-5 locations and there are only 7 in the complex. His focus is definitely on the people that live in the valley now which is 21-25yr olds. So i think Crave realized they had better make a change to get that location to even work. With Rshea brewery near by it wouldn’t be unreasonable to have another brewery to pick up some of that crowd. I think a brewery will have a calming affect so that it might not seem so much like a wannabe mardi gras party scene 365 days a year.
