Now if they would just reopen Rothrock Road, that would signal the real decline of NIMBYism in Fairlawn. But apparently that's still the third rail of Fairlawn politics and the NIMBYs occupy the high ground in the eternal stalemate. Yea, they stopped the Walmart from moving.

February 23, 20223 yr I guess it was too much to expect something that wouldn't involve a massive setback behind a sea of parking. Does seem to be Montrose's classical aesthetic. Are there already gas wells on the site there, just hidden back where no one ever sees them because this development hasn't actually happened yet? Am I mixing terms in my head or is this a proposal to have a few new fracking/extraction wells right in the middle of the development?

I agree, larger cities in Ohio need development now if they are to grow. I know it's probably wishful thinking, but Ohio should remove some of the impediments to annexations for other large cities not named Columbus.

I’m so glad to see this move forward. I’m surprised to see a couple down votes on new build in Akron on something that’s not historically a wetland. This is exactly the kind of development that akron needs.

Maybe, but honestly, Akron still has a great many large undeveloped and even more large underdeveloped parcels, even in the heart of downtown (inside OH-59/OH-8/I-77). Also, Akron annexing Silver Lake won't help Silver Lake overcome NIMBYism if Akron itself is also dominated by NIMBYs. Considering that the YIMBY-NIMBY vote on City Council for this development was 7-6 (see https://www.wkyc.com/article/news/local/akron/akron-city-council-narrowly-passes-white-pond-development-plan/95-4f40667d-678e-4a5c-b1bb-6d9ebab8dbd9, including the City Council meeting itself as embedded video), Akron annexing nearby townships or suburbs where NIMBY forces are even stronger might well add new wards that would have made this week's vote lose. 7 hours ago, jeremyck01 said: I’m so glad to see this move forward. As I noted to vulcana above, the City Council vote was 7-6. I dream of the day when it would be 13-0, and only necessary at all because it required the sale of public land. But we don't live in that world yet. NIMBY thinking still has a lot of purchase even in communities that desperately need development, new residents, and the larger tax base that those two things bring.

December 27, 20222 yr It will be good to have this part of downtown Akron reactivated. In 2023, Akron will work toward redeveloping Innerbelt property Dan Shingler December 27th 2022 6:00 AM "Akron’s roughly 30-acre Innerbelt property has been vacant for more than five years now, leaving an empty chasm of presumably valuable real estate in the middle of downtown. ... The city is waiting for a study it’s commissioned from Liz Ogbu, an Oakland architect, urbanist and consultant who focuses on “spatial justice,” including what to do with land that in the past used to house Black neighborhoods before such sites were used for projects like Akron’s Innerbelt. ... But the site has more challenges than the city initially thought, Segedy said, and it will probably be 2024, at the earliest, before Akron determines the best use for the land, identifies specific projects and possibly developers, and has the site ready for construction." https://www.crainscleveland.com/akron-news/2023-could-be-year-decision-akrons-innerbelt-property
