I'll be in Columbus this Saturday and am staying the night. I really don't know much about the place. I've got a couple o' questions for the experts.

1. What's the best neighborhood to hang out in? I know the Short North is cool and am always hearing about it but are there others that are just as good?

2. Know any good restaurants? I'm going with a few other people with varying tastes and budgets. I'm looking for something in the 12$–$35 range. Maybe something similar to this: http://www.228coco.com/?page_id=6

3. What about places to go out to later at night? What area has the highest concentration night spots. Is there any place that is so Columbus that I have to check out?

4. What about late night after-party joints to get an early breakfast?

5. I'd like to be able to park the car at the hotel and not use it for the rest of the night. Any nearby ones that would allow this, that wouldn't require walking all the way from downtown? Open to a b&b but not preferred. Thanks for the help! :-)

1. If you're tired of the Short North, check out the German Village for an intimate setting.  Also, the University District also has quite a few nooks and crannies.

2. I recommend the Rossi Bar + Grille on High Street in the Short North, but that's just me.  It's your price-level and has a wonderful interior/service.  If you are looking for an interesting experience, try Basi (which is in a back alley in the Victorian Village).  They have excellent Italian.

3. The Front Street/Vine Street intersection.  Have fun.  Trust me.

4. Late breakfast?  There is a diner/breakfast joint in the Short North for that late-night spillage but I forget what it's called.

5. Oh, I dunno.

As Chris said, you should definitely check out the Short North and German Village, as well as the Arena District before anything else, if you truely want to experience the best Columbus has to offer.

There's some nice restaurants/bars on Gay Street downtown, if you like to relax and eat/drink al fresco.

Im not aware of good places to eat breakfast late at night but have you ever been to First Watch? Best breakfast food I've ever had! Im not sure what time they open in the morning, but there's a great location in German Village on High Street, just south of downtown!

If you go far up the short north enough, you'll come to the south gateway. There's always a lot going on there. They have the sky bar, Eddie George's grill, Max Mex (decent Mexican food and on nice days they open the windows and it's like you're eating outside.) As well as your typical Paneras, Barnes & Noble, etc.

Marcellas in the Short North has good Italian food. Schmidts is probably the most famous restaurant in German Village if you like nasty German food. I only go for the cream puffs *drools*.

I'm not sure what to tell you about hotels. Have you considered the Hyatt downtown? It might be pricey but the Arena District and the Short North are walking distance from it. You'd want to drive to German Village from there, though; it's not really "walking" distance.

Have you ever heard of EASTON? j/k ;)

^Go away!!!

No, but seriously, if you catch a case of affluenza and feel the need to splurge money on clothes and random BS then Easton is the best mall to go to. However, the Short North offers plenty of retail stores and MUCH BETTER restaurants/bars than Easton. Minus Cheesecake Factory.

Just be aware that it's very easy to accidentally walk into a gay bar or gay restaurant in the Short North (not that there's anything wrong with that). It's just surprising if you're from a more conservative city.

He's from Dayton.  It's easy to walk in a crackhouse and not blink.

Is there any nightlife in Old Town East yet?  With all the rehabs, it seems like a neighborhood begging for a few cool places to go out.

^I just took pictures in Old Town East. I don't think so. Yeah, its got nice housing stock, a very good (okay weird) mix of residents but no business district.

The neighborhood business district is the heart of the economy and has a lot to do with the way a neighborhood defines itself. I would like to see Old Towne East improve theirs, as a way of improving their own identity. Right now, I think Old Towne East is just in an awkward stage.

Drive an hour on 71 SB.

^ I already live in Cincinnati. But I appreciate your enthusiasm.

You're making us Dayton boys sound bad. Maybe I should have said D8N Boyz.

I made a reservation at the Hyatt this morning so that's where I'll be. Thanks for all the recommendations. I've been checking some of these places out and they look pretty good (sans Easton).

There's Carabar for live music. Good happy hour too. Black Creek Bistro is open til 11 for food. Also Chop Chop does events, some running late. All three of these places are in OTE on Parsons.
