June 29, 20213 yr https://www.wvxu.org/post/cincinnati-police-chief-eliot-isaac-retiring-2022 I'll be sad to see Chief Isaac go next year. I feel like he handled Cincinnati PD's response to the unrest last summer very well in comparison to Cleveland and Columbus. Yes, Cincinnati PD already had better relationships with the community due to the Collaborative Agreement, but Chief Isaac had a calming effect by directly addressing the protestors early on. I know the city is struggling with increased gun violence recently, but I think he has done a great job with the resources he has. Hopefully we can get another well qualified person to take his place.

January 27, 20223 yr ^ Sounds like CPD was planning to have a press conference about the sex/prostitution/trafficking sting and the mayor got wind of it and stopped it. It's not clear if the vice squad is being allowed to continue patrolling parks, the denial by the chief isn't really all that clear about what the policy actually is. The mayor wants to write tickets instead of arresting people. I have actually stumbled upon this sort of thing twice - once in Burnet Woods when I was a student at DAAP, and once while jogging through Fairview Park about 5-6 years ago. I am somewhat suspicious of the cancelled press conference. It makes you wonder if one of those apprehended could be a recognizable name and/or otherwise has a friend at City Hall.

June 17, 20222 yr https://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/cincyparks/news/historic-wolf-tragically-stolen-from-eden-park/ It is with regret that we must inform you the historic Capitolene Wolf Statue gifted to the City of Cincinnati in 1931 from the City of Rome was stolen from Eden Park. Sometime last evening, someone cut through the bronze paws from the statue and removed it. As you know, we often deal with vandalism, litter and dumping issues in our parks, however given the historical nature of this piece this is beyond disappointing. Public works such as this displayed throughout our parks have historical significance and are intended to be exhibited for the enjoyment and study of the general public. Fortunately, we have a strong relationship with the Police Department when issues such as this arise and we are working with them to investigate and hopefully recover the statue. We are also working internally to assess the value of the piece. We are asking anyone with knowledge of who is responsible, or where the statue is, to report it to the Police immediately so that those responsible may be held accountable. About the Statue The Capitolene Wolf, a bronze sculpture depicting the infants Romulus and Remus with a mother wolf, is a replica of the ancient Etruscan statue on the Capitolene Hill in Rome. It was a gift from the City of Rome in 1932, arranged by the Sons of Italy to honor the Roman general Cincinnatus, for whom Cincinnati was named. The statue is inscribed with “Anno X,” which translates to the year 1931.

June 28, 20222 yr I know this is a late response to the statue being stolen, and stealing is bad, but..... this statue was literally a gift from Mussolini (likely why it was stolen). https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2020/01/06/should-statue-gift-mussolini-removed-eden-park-cincinnati/2829704001/
June 28, 20222 yr Agreed. Take the $50,000 and give it to an artist to create something interesting and modern that flirts with our historical legacy as a city but takes it in a new, modern direction. We need more boldness around here. Besides, y'all ever look at that wolf's face?
June 28, 20222 yr There's not really any indication that it was a direct gift from Mussolini. It's been reported that a local organization sent a letter to request a statue to Mussolini. He approved of the idea, and it was the Governor of Rome who actually donated the piece. Later on during the war, there are reports of Governor Ludovisi providing intelligence as a spy for the allies, becoming a wanted man by Hitler, and then donating his palace to the Red Cross after the war. These facts were apparently used to grant him some political asylum as a fascist politician. Though I believe he was still barred from holding public office since he was a politician for the fascist party in Italy. It's more complicated than just Mussolini gave us a statue. The truth is somewhere between fascist dictator donates statue and WWII ally collaborator donates statue. https://villaludovisi.org/2020/01/09/in-cincinnati-a-sculpture-gifted-in-1931-by-francesco-boncompagni-ludovisi-draws-new-scrutiny/

August 7, 20222 yr I call upon mayor Aftab, 3cdc, and cpd to do the following: 1) Cancel the block parties. Shine massive spot lights on streets and street corners and play classical music like Mozart over loud speakers like they do at UC to calm down the crowds. 2) have cpd actively patrol and engage with community at night and walk the streets instead of grouping together and staying on one block for the rest of the night. Have zone coverage of each block. 3) after 2:30am when the bars are closing down a full cpd blitz sweep of main - and make sure there is no loitering on city streets.

Number 1 would be helpful because Otr has gotten worse since these block parties have become accepted. huge crowds clutter the street, openly drinking, trading drugs. Of course violence will happen because your dealing with large unruly crowds that are at intoxicated and on substances… Not even touching the issue about the loud noise that spreads throughout Otr until 4-5am and the immense trash that is left behind. Truly looks like a pigs den. Im surprised more Otr residents haven’t spoken up about this to 3cdc and city council…it’s truly odd behavior that is seemingly become accepted as it has occurred every weekend since Covid. ultimately, Im a big believer that these block parties have become the main catalyst for the recent continuous violence down in otr. It’s sad, as I see posts on Reddit about people running for cover in neighboring bars and being scared for their lives. a lot of people in the comments also share the same sentiment that Otr has gone to hell and it’s risking ruining its reputation that took so many years to wipe away….how many more nights of violence until less and less people go down to Otr and stop visiting bars and restaurants? Especially during these tough economic times, this is the last thing that struggling Otr businesses need….and this in effect can singly handily kill 3cdc mission of revitalizing Otr. The violence in otr has gotten out of hand and needs to be stopped. It should be the cities number one priority as it can afford to lose the years of effort and hard work it took for 3cdc and others to make Otr a popular destination spot.

I fail to see how blaring classical music to run people off is going to help OTR business owners or its reputation as a popular destination spot. Seriously, what are you basing this "OTR has gotten out of hand and has to be stopped" opinion on? Violent crime is at exactly the same rate as it was in 2019 in OTR, before the pandemic. Total violent crimes are down about 1% from last year. Aggravated assaults are down 30% so far this year. There was a mass shooting in Fairfield earlier this year and one in West Chester in 2019. Has West Chester gotten out of hand? It sucks we live in a state where anyone can carry a gun anywhere and be tempted to use it when conflict arises, but that's a different problem altogether than whether OTR is uniquely unsafe. This was a one-off incident. It is a tragedy, but it could happen anywhere.

Yes, this mass shooting was very much a one-off event. Saying that, which is true, doesn't mean that there aren't shootings in OTR (or elsewhere for that matter). And it doesn't mean that it isn't a problem that we need to address. Of course it is. We also need to address it in Price Hill, Fairmount, Westwood, the list goes on (including, by the way, many suburbs). But it is simply untrue that there are more shootings in OTR now than there were in the past. There are exactly the same amount as there was in 2019, and there are a lot less than there were earlier in the decade, or in decades past. There's not some new rush of crime because of some "block parties" or whatever you want to call them.
August 8, 20222 yr I can’t imagine that Cincy is all that much different from Cleveland with respect to late night night life, and I have some experience with it vis a vis the latter. 1:30am is after most of the places that are looking to minimize rowdiness and problems have closed. So people who are looking for that are going to places that are still open. But…..it sounds like they can just hang out on the streets, at these “block parties”. Places where there is no control of things like fighting and underage alcohol consumption, drug use, gambling and other fight starters, and of course there’s no closing time. That’s not asking for problems, that’s planning on them. It amazes me that they tolerate that. Of course now that they have, ending it would be much tougher than not letting them get established to begin with. Edited August 8, 20222 yr by E Rocc
