judging by their parked cars sitting on the same street corners blasting music with their doors and sun roof open every weekend and the same people illegally grilling food weekend on the same corner every weekend…also - they have plastic cups with alcohol in them (judging by the bottles some patrons are holding outside) - it’s clear they want to bring their own alcohol, eat and grill outside and have a party on the streets.

the problem isn’t bar capacity - the problem is the organizers who are enticing people to meet up and host these large crowd parties.

So your source is anecdotal? Who are the "they" you are referring to? Is this one group? Who is organizing this?

Please understand I am trying to understand where you are coming from because it sounds like your argument makes a lot of assumptions.

literally not true. There is plenty of capacity at bars…maybe on fcc game days less so.

but the people that are partying on the streets were never planning on going out to a bar in otr…they were planning to dominate and overtake the streets of Otr. Big difference.

Respectfully, you don't know what you're talking about. Every bar has an insane line after 10 pm on the weekends and it is one in and one out. It is 100% true that the bars are at capacity and a lot of people can't get in.

The bar patrons aren't the ones causing these issues.  The issues are 100% coming from the block party crowd.  Anyone who has been on Main St past 12 am on any weekend can easily tell this.  I'm not sure why some people are white knighting for these assholes online.  They suck and their illegal sidewalk parties need to be shutdown.

Who is white knighting?

If you are referring to my comments you are mistaken. This situation is more nuanced and potential solutions are somewhere in between a full crackdown and “abandon all hope.”

apperantly if you have this view you are an anti-urbanist.

As an actual landlord I know this fact to be true. I have spent 7 days per week in OTR at my workplace since before you were shaving. So don't call me anti urban or anything else.

wasn’t directed at you but the others white knighting for this behavior - it’s clear you don’t stand for this bs and I applaud you.

Exactly. There is no denying that these gatherings are causing problems and the temperature needs to be taken down. It's already been announced that the SID will be ramping up ambassadors along Main Street. I would be surprised if we don't see the police starting to crack down on things like the illegal grills this upcoming weekend, in addition to more of the tactics they've been ramping up over the past few weeks. Many residents and business owners have already been putting pressure on the city to do more over the past few weeks, and that is only going to accelerate.

At this same time, this is not going to have any measurable impact on the long term growth of OTR. Anyone who claims they're never going to visit OTR again after last weekend's events is posturing.

Literally no one is saying "oh well, that's city life, we just need to deal with it" and yet people in this thread keep making that straw man argument.

I'll make a prediction: crime is going to tank again once we get into a full year of regular school. The crime is almost all kids and full in-person school didn't start up again until March of this year then stopped again only two months later for summer. It's already better in 2022 as compared to 2021 in most cities.

Thank you. Its clear to me that people care. My applicants comment. One of my tenants and my adult son moved from Main St on account of the nighttime chaos as mild as it was two years back.

Persons who go to alcohol driven crowd scenes and are still there at the witching hour should not be surprised at the consequences, whether it is Bond Hill, The Banks, Riverfront festivals or Main St. or even some random open red cup party.

A lot of bars in the Cleveland area that don't cater to the chaotic have been closing earlier, like 1am.  We started to after some jackass who arrived after 1am put a bullet through our front window after getting ejected for starting trouble.

It amazes me that any modern city government puts up with this.  I can't imagine it happening on W. 6th or E. 4th in Cleveland.  Let alone Broadway in Bedford, where I worked.   A bar can at least control, and be responsible for, what happens on its premises.

There are similar crowds hanging out on the sidewalks on W. 6th every weekend. The only difference is the grills. Which, like, fine, outlaw the grills. I really don't think that's the problem here though.

I was just going to comment something similar, I go to Cleveland a few times a year and I’ve definitely seen similar* crowds in those areas. Now I will say for better or worse the crowds I’ve seen in Cleveland don’t share the same intensity/sheer size that Cincinnati’s Main Street does. Only during the Cavs Playoffs have I really seen a Cleveland crowd that resembles what we see on Main Street every weekend. Also the crowd composition at those Cleveland locations mentioned are most of the time more similar to The Banks not Main Street.

Grills mean open containers.  Parties on the street mean completely unmoderated behavior.   It also mean people either filtering into the bars (without patronizing them) to use the restrooms, when the bars try to stop this there is conflict, if they don't try to stop this it can cause other problems.   Or people are using the streets as restrooms.    It's not asking for trouble it's  guaranteeing it.

A lot of assumptions being made by someone who doesn't live here or hang out on Main Street.

You're right! This is exactly why we need to invest in self cleaning, public toilets throughout the city.

Someone with 17 years experience keeping order in a bar, I can't imagine there is that different from here.

There are a lot of things that happened to me that occurred during these “block parties” that I’m afraid to discuss. It’s to much of a hot button topic…that said, it’s like going to a cook out you weren’t invited to. It’s a very uncomfortable feeling - especially with the looks you get and the things that are being told to your face.

I am sorry I was born white, but I am tired of the racist remarks that are thrown in my face when I walk through those crowds. I am not responsible for what happened hundreds of years ago - so stop placing the weight of my ancestors on my shoulders because of the color of my skin!

There it is! My friend, I am white and have walked through these crowds a million times and no one has ever said anything mean or insulting to me. I have never felt uncomfortable or unwelcome. Maybe some self reflection is in order.

Extremely bizarre and disheartening situation. I saw the attack mentioned on the Main St. OTR Facebook page but no official news coverage for a full week.

Cincinnati police investigating brutal attack in heart of Over-the-Rhine

A vicious attack in Over-the-Rhine ended in the death of a Cincinnati man — a man who friends said was known to support bars and restaurants in OTR.

Friends of the victim and police sources said he and his wife had left the FC Cincinnati game Wednesday night and were walking down 14th Street near Vine Street when they noticed a car driving the wrong way down the one-way street.

They tried to alert the driver when sources said the woman who was behind the wheel got out and attacked the man.
