It's a crime in Cincinnati and elsewhere, that people can't have differences of opinion, yet still carry on a conversation about crime without threatening to take their ball and go home!

^I think it's just the way in which Sherman presents his concern on this forum...even I have issues with as obviously stated above.  It's one thing to be concerned and get involved at a level that makes a difference and it's another thing to continue to spread the negative press that the Enquirer specifically writes to appeal to their suburban base.

I know Sherman personally and we have disagreements on a number of things but still remain friends and civil with one another, but from my experience I know that many many people who are heavily involved get upset when it is just the spread of the sensationalist story-writing from the local news media.  OTR and many other inner-city neighborhoods around the United States have been plagued by this local media behavior for decades, and I think many people are just tired of it...and justifiably so.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and concerns jim uber.  The same goes out to Sherman, DanB and others.  Lets get this back to a respectful discourse though before I have to pull out the infamous axe.

I just don't see what is wrong with posting crime reports in a crime discussion.  I think OTR residents are probably tired of the actual crime happening in their neighborhood, more than they are tired of "sensationalist" journalism.  If someone was to get shot in my neighborhood, you can bet it would be posted because it's a crime that matters to me.  I don't really see how the Enquirer is being wrong here by simply reporting facts.  I understand their bias when it comes to stores closing downtown and the like, but crime happens way more in OTR than it does in almost any other part of the city, and it thusly more represented in media coverage.

Well, just heard the sad news that Brittany Jackson passed away.  What a shame.

Do we not have enough of our courts clogged that we have to deal with this? What has happened to punishment via paddling?

Kids really do do this. At one of my previous jobs, an 18-year-old co-worker handed me his phone and said "Dude check out this chick I've been talking to." I'm like "OK", figuring it was just going to be her face -- nope, she was naked. She turned out to be 15-16 years old. I said, "You can't walk around with pictures of naked young girls!" He said rather casually that he had lots of pictures that girls that he knew from school or whatever sent him of themselves. A lot of kids think it's normal!

This is the most wanted criminal in Prospect Hill. If you see his sorry ass, call shadowhare since the CPD never does anything about him.

Luckily, no one has taken any of our plants. We tried to purchase plants this year that weren't too over-the-top.

So ... what's the solution to this guy?

I've petted that orange cat at the one minute mark.

I don't get it. A teenager takes a nude photograph of herself with her camera on her cell phone, then passes it along to someone else, who then passes it onto others. She was so traumatized by this she committed suicide? Then her parents have the nerve to sue?

Family of Ohio suicide victim sue over ’sexting’

AP, May 12, 2009

CINCINNATI — A suburban Cincinnati couple has filed a lawsuit in their high school daughter’s suicide, which they say was caused by taunting she faced after her nude photo was sent to cell phones without her permission.

^ the only context that i can understand that is that she was bullied and the school district didn't stop it.

Now, that doesn't mean i agree with the lawsuit...but i can see where these parents are coming from.  The sensational part of the story is the text messages...but the real issue is bullying.

I know it's a terrible thing when parents have to experience the death of a child, but this lawsuit is frivolous. A school can only do so much to stop harassment (most of which was probably done off school grounds, outside of school hours), especially when there's an underlying cause for that harassment that's as big as this one was.  I'm also not sure why the lawsuit was brought upon the police, the girl was 18 at the time of the photo and I don't know what criminal actions were taken by anyone by "sexting" it (the infamous case in Mason involved minors, so it was child pornography laws that were being used to warrant criminal charges).

Teens really need to learn that every photo they take or is taken of them will come back to haunt them.  Have some respect for yourself whenever you get in front of a camera.

Absolutely.  It's even worse now with digital photographs that can easily be sent to hundreds of people or posted online with little effort.  Teens (and many adults) need to realize that text messages and emails should not be thought of as private communication.

At the same time, I do not think it is appropriate to bully someone, and it is terrible that the "boyfriend" forwarded the picture to others.  There were a lot of places where things went wrong.

However, I'm not sure about this lawsuit.  Unless there are several details I know nothing about, I'm not sure what the school or the police department could do.

WLWT contacted 3CDC about this and I think they got wind of it because of a conversation going back and forth with the Vine St. Merchants. I had just taken a picture (the picture in the lead up to the story) of this guy as he walked into my backyard in the middle of the day and are now trying to get out the most recent pics of him as he looks very different from the 2006 photo everyone has seen. If anyone wants the picture, email me at [email protected].

So ... what's the solution to this guy?

The solution is not to get him on just a petty theft or trespassing charge, but rather drug possesion. He is a known crack addict and is sure to have something on him when he is caught.

We have been dealing with R* for the last 4 years.  I followed him around a couple of weeks ago for an hour and 15 minutes, waiting for the cops to show up (they never did). I ended up following him from Highland Ave all the way to Race and Green .  I am getting sick of calling dispatch and being laughed at. Unfortunately  he is a habitual offender that will never stop.

I had half of Dist.1 at my house when I confronted him in my yard. I would like to see restrictions on Pendleton and the hillside in his probation. We are going to hit him with a simple trespass and at least propose it.  Hopefully he can be picked up outside of Findlay Market this weekend.

Thanks Michael!  I wonder how many of those $5. SCPA Japanese maples he has snagged in the last week.  Another idea floating around is to buy him a bus ticket back to Cleveland.

5 in Taliband gang sent to prison

By Kimball Perry, Cincinnati Enquirer, May 18, 2009

Five members of a criminal gang that terrorized Northside were convicted Monday and sent to prison.

Each of the five was convicted of participating in a criminal gang and drug charges.

Members of the Taliband - a group that apparently took the name of Islamic terrorists, though the Northside group misspelled the name by adding a "d" - are accused of committing burglaries, assaults and controlling much of the drug trade in Northside by brute force.

City manager wants police investigated

By Eileen Kelley, Cincinnati Enquirer, May 26, 2009

Cincinnati City Manager Milton Dohoney has recommended that the police department's internal affairs officers and an outside agency conduct an in-depth investigation into the problems in the mounted patrol.

Dohoney told Police Chief Thomas Streicher he wanted the investigation because the situation involves the chief's family and that the time involved in dealing with the "silly incident" was frustrating him in light of all the other problems the city faces.

The mounted patrol's problems began after an officer was reprimanded for shaving the number of a Pittsburgh Steeler into the neck of his horse and dressing the animal in team colors.

Aaron Layton contends his supervisor, Sgt. Elena Moton, was well aware of the number homage to the officer's favorite team and player Troy Polamalu. He said she never told him to stop, but encouraged him to continue to dress his horse.

No investigation needed, arrest the cop right now.  The Steelers colors on a CPD horse?  I don't see the need for any other evidence to indict both parties involved.

East Price Hill Neighbors Create "Safety Boundaries"

WKRC, May 27, 2009

In East Price Hill, neighbors say the sound of gunshots is becoming more and more commonplace. A look at crime statistics from the Cincinnati Police department shows a large percentage jump in the number of assaults involving weapons in the area.

Less than two weeks ago a teenager was shot in the face there walking to a baseball game in a park. Local 12's Rich Jaffe says along Price Avenue, many people are drawing boundary lines for their own safety.

You'll only see Theresa Woods and her daughters walking through their East Price Hill neighborhood while the sun is up. "This is where we reside at, this is where we should be able to walk down these streets and be safe ... AND YOU'RE NOT? No, oh no ... certain times as soon as the sun goes down you won't see me out here."

People who live in this community say almost all the young people along this section of Price Avenue are carrying guns ... gunshots can be heard almost every night.

18 Year-Old Murdered in West End

WKRC, May 24, 2009

The Cincinnati Police Homicide Department continues to investigate a homicide that occurred at the City West apartments in the West End early Saturday morning. The victim, 18 year-old Jeffrey Davis, was found suffering from a gunshot wound in the parking lot of Richie's Fast Food Restaurant at 1301 Linn Street. He died at University Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.

Police say it appears Davis was trying to break up a fight when someone shot him in the back. Davis's sister, Ashley, said her brother went to Withrow High School and leaves behind a one year-old son.

Woman, 2 kids shot dead

By Jennifer Baker, Cincinnati Enquirer, June 2, 2009

PENDLETON – A 19-year-old mother, her 9-month-old baby and a 3-year-old child she was babysitting were found shot to death early today in an apartment in the 400 block of East 13th Street, Cincinnati police said.

^ I heard this last night. :-/

I knew it was gun shots versus a blown tire, which I hear a lot from 71. I decided to call the CPD. I told them it was hard to determine where the shots came from because the sound bounces off the hills so much. They asked me how many shots and I told them 3. So sad ... and scary.

Here is a view of the 400 block in streetview. I drive and bike 13th a lot, and have never felt totally comfortable from Liberty to Broadway because of the lookouts on the street corners and the constant ruckus that goes down on that street (it's one of CPD's stated "trouble streets").

With this, I hope the CPD does a clean up of that neighborhood.

this makes me nervous, because i want to buy a house that is only a block away from this

this makes me nervous, because i want to buy a house that is only a block away from this

The fact that the killer not only killed the mother, but the two kids, makes me think this was a crime of passion and not a random act of violence.

Miltons was robbed by gunpoint 2 times in 1 week.  Still, I love it here and would not want to live anywhere  else.  If you see ANY dealing call  the OTR Drug and Gun Elimination Program Hotline 513.588.6909 Also call the cops on any beat up KY plate car and report suspicious activity when you see people sitting in their vehicles.  Very sad week for our neighbors to the South in Pendleton...

Thanks!

its not this individual murder that scares me its the fact that earlier last month there was a killing on the corner i want to buy on and then another on a block over. Then on top of that these two. I know that these will probably come back as the mother doing it or a bf or something, but it's still a murder or shots fired in my potential neighborhood.

Just for the record I'm not scared of living in OTR regaurdless of the murders because i know that they are almost never random targets. I do however have to worry about the saftey of my gf and her perception of the neighborhood. If she never feels safe living there then we can't. OTR is still a tough sell to a 20 something girl once you venture out of the Gateway Quarter.

^That is very sad news!

This high speed chase flew by my house last Thurs while I was mowing the grass.      Even Mayor Keller helped apprehend one of the perps.

Here is his girlfriend's profile. Apparently both went to Wright State. I know that he won't be returning!

2 people shot on Metro bus

By Eileen Kelley, Cincinnati Enquirer, June 5, 2009

A fight over a woman who boarded a Metro bus Friday morning with her new boyfriend turned violent when the former boyfriend already on the bus reportedly fired gunshots and wounded two people.

Police say the man shot his ex-girlfriend’s current boyfriend in the stomach and another passenger unconnected to the argument in the hand. None of the injuries are expected to be life-threatening, said Cincinnati Police Capt. Kim Frey.

The shooting happened at 9:10 a.m. on Metro Bus 27 as it was heading down Beekman Street and Moosewood in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Millvale. The bus was going downtown.

Public transportation is a tough sell with stories like this.  Who would want to leave their car to ride a bus where people are getting shot?

I can think of two shootings on I-75 in recent memory, why isn't anyone saying "Who would want to drive on the highways with all these gun battles?"
