May 25, 201015 yr really? Bloods and Crips? I'd like to hear more about this...i'm not so naive as to think that gangs don't exist here, but it really doesn't seem like this city has a lot of gang activity.
May 25, 201015 yr You still have to look like a gang member otherwise. Good point. I see way, way too many Cincinnati Reds hats around NYC (where I'm living now). Needless to say, when I wear mine, I don't think anyone is mistaking me for being in whatever gang that is being used for. True story: http://liftingfogblog.com/2009/04/15/resolved-you-look-retarded-in-your-cincinnati-reds-cap/
May 25, 201015 yr I love Oskar Mullane's comment in response to that post. Cincinnati needs more swagger like that.
June 9, 201015 yr The biggest news from this, besides 3CDC pursuing options to move the Drop Inn from the Washington Park area, is the confirmation that the 1132 Bar will close somewhat soon. Shooting Outside Bar Sparks Concerns For New SCPA School's New Neighbors Could Face Scrutiny WLWT, June 8, 2010 CINCINNATI -- A shooting Tuesday morning has sparked safety concerns at the newly opened School for the Creative and Performing Arts. Classes open in August at the new facility on Central Parkway, between Race and Vine streets. That's near the Drop-Inn Center, 1132 Bar and Washington Park, which attract many homeless people and those with alcohol or drug problems.
June 9, 201015 yr The biggest news from this, besides 3CDC pursuing options to move the Drop Inn from the Washington Park area, is the confirmation that the 1132 Bar will close somewhat soon. bummer They used to have decent coneys.
June 15, 201014 yr I suppose this answered my question as to why crime scene tape was wrapped around the jail in downtown today... Shooting victim collapses on jail steps By Jennifer Baker, Cincinnati Enquirer, June 15, 2010 DOWNTOWN - Cincinnati police today identified the 35-year-old man who collapsed on the steps of the Hamilton County jail from gunshot wounds late Tuesday. The victim was Edgar Gillylen, said Sgt. Bob Liston, a homicide investigator. There are no suspects and no arrests had been made. A motive remains unknown.
June 16, 201014 yr T-shirt vendor shot to death in Over-the-Rhine By Jennifer Baker • [email protected] • June 16, 2010 OVER-THE-RHINE - A Cleveland T-shirt vendor who traveled to Cincinnati and sold shirts outside the Reds game Tuesday night was killed in a “senseless shooting,” police said. Duane M. Hamilton, 32, was shot several times in the torso about 10:19 p.m. outside the Vine Street Market, 1719 Vine St., said Sgt. Gary Conner of the Cincinnati Homicide Unit. “It’s a senseless shooting,” Conner said. “It makes no sense whatsoever. There is no robbery motive, nothing we see.” "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
June 16, 201014 yr Well that definitely sounds like a drug situation. The guy probably moved drugs back and forth to Cleveland, using the T-shirt thing as his cover.
June 16, 201014 yr Absolutely! Well that definitely sounds like a drug situation. The guy probably moved drugs back and forth to Cleveland, using the T-shirt thing as his cover.
June 16, 201014 yr Yeah, it seemed entirely senseless except that they noted that the posse that shoot him were dressed the same, in recognizable gang colors.
June 17, 201014 yr And with last night's murder in Avondale, we have now tied with last year's murder count (for June 17, 2009).
June 17, 201014 yr ^ all other crime (except burglary is down) Total: -3.12% Rape: -12.38% Robbery: -15.29% Ag. Assault: -10.28% Burglary 13.31% Larceny -4.08% Auto Theft -16.01% Non-Ag. Assault -1.60% Vandalism -0.60% Family Offense -54.62% Disorderly Offense -20.00% Other -10.22%
June 18, 201014 yr I like how Xavier didn't put out a notice or a statement for a murder that happened adjacent to campus early Thursday. And add one late last night, that's five since Tuesday :(
June 18, 201014 yr ^Honestly what would that have done? They didn't put out a statement when that guy stabbed his daughter in-law 2 weeks ago.
June 18, 201014 yr What good would do these notices do without a time machine? Anyone have any stats for how many college students have been randomly pulled into dark alleys and murdered this year?
June 18, 201014 yr ^Honestly what would that have done? They didn't put out a statement when that guy stabbed his daughter in-law 2 weeks ago. There was some student-body anger a few months ago when an incident -- which happened adjacent to our campus, occurred without the students or the Xavier body knowing. It was a drive-by shooting on Dana near the Alumni Building. We have automated text messaging systems and all that, but nothing really came out of that. We do have a new Safety site, which is supposed to keep the Xavier body more informed, but it's not been used to that effect. http://www.xavier.edu/safety The area where the individual died happened on a portion of Dana that abuts East Campus. He was shot elsewhere. @Jake: None of these murders are random, and it's pretty much a given that it is pulling in a particular subset of individuals obviously. But that doesn't resonate to the students (or to their parents). There is a reason why the signage to get to Xavier from Interstate 71 NB points you towards Duck Creek and Dana, versus Duck Creek to Montgomery through Evanston...
June 18, 201014 yr Well they were notified if you and i know it happened. Students can't be that naive from not knowing what's going on around them.
June 18, 201014 yr Well, I know more because I created the Safety web-site and I talk to the officers on a near daily basis, so I know more than what 95% of the people here do.
June 18, 201014 yr Promote the students to do a community watch then. Have a group of them patrol the streets and report signs of crimes.
June 18, 201014 yr There is and will ALWAYS be crime. Sometimes reporting everything can be a bad thing if you trying to get more students into the area. If you don't do drugs you will be just fine. Your chances are much higher of dying in an automobile crash then getting shot or murdered.
June 18, 201014 yr As evidenced by angry employees and students like that Cho character at Virginia Tech and that recent incident down in Alabama, the biggest threat for on-campus random violence is the students and staff themselves, not the people in surrounding neighborhoods. That Cho guy killed 30~ people himself, I'm sure more than have been killed by outsiders on all American college campuses for the last 100 years.
June 18, 201014 yr Isn't Penn state in a rough area? Like much worse than anything in Ohio..lol How do they report such things?
June 18, 201014 yr ^No. Penn State is in a small town in rural Pennsylvania. Penn is in a relatively rough neighborhood in Philly. The area around USC is pretty rough, and there is a system in place to notify students when a crime is committed against a student. The other week there was a triple homicide about 6-7 blocks from my apartment, and the University did send out a safety email to the students even though no students were involved. When big crimes like murders happen, I think it is the responsibility of the university to let the students know what is going on so they can take the proper precautions, such as avoiding the area where the crime happened, making sure to not walk by yourself, etc. While I know it is extremely rare for students to actually be murdered by outsiders, crimes against property, muggings, robberies, car jackings, etc all are fairly common. I know of way too many people at UC who have gotten mugged, some of whom were mugged at gunpoint. So, even though the chance of getting murdered might be statistically low, crimes do occur against students in poor neighborhoods because the locals view the students as easy targets, and people with money.
June 19, 201014 yr What in the hell does a notification do, aside from create fear and help educate students on ways to avoid situations where they could become a victim?! If they were taught ways to avoid criminal activity by using street common sense then they wouldn't put themselves in this situation and you can eliminate the need of sowing seeds of fear into innocent minds.
June 19, 201014 yr It gives the appearance that the university is keeping the student body, faulty and staff informed of crimes occurred on campus and off-campus (in areas directly abutting). It's also very important for parents to know this when they are being given the tours and whatnot. One of the more frequently asked questions is, "How is safety conveyed to (my) student?" We have XU Alert Me, which sends out mass text messages e-mails and phone calls (if so enabled) and it has been used sporadically. The discretion for us is up to the department. It was widely used, for instance, when we had a major virus that infected every computer on campus. It was not widely used when we had a drive-by on Dana, and not used at all when we had the murder on Dana a block from the new Williams College of Business. It's almost about appearance that the university is doing something than anything else.
June 19, 201014 yr I'm pretty sure there's a law requiring state schools (at least) to notify the campus community of major crimes near campus and to report crime statistics on a regular basis to the community.
June 19, 201014 yr >such as avoiding the area where the crime happened Why? The crime already happened. >they were taught ways to avoid criminal activity by using street common sense Fear is big business. Fear exists because the average chump has absolutely no ability to weigh statistics.
June 19, 201014 yr I'd add that most (okay nearly all) college students are dense and believe they are indestructible. There is little the staff of the university can do about it and if the email encourages some to at least travel in packs then it was a success.
June 19, 201014 yr UC and other schools have a significant graduate student population, and most of these are from over seas. It is one of the major ways that America is introduced to foreigners, especially foreigners that we actually (should) want to be here. So one problem I have with those emails is that it completely freaks out most every new student from foreign lands. When I take groups of grad students out for dinner and bring them downtown, it's like a big adventure, and a scary one. This whole thing reinforces their preexisting notion that in America there is someone around the corner with a gun waiting for them. It's no wonder to me why nearly every foreign student who stays, ends up in the suburbs.
June 24, 201014 yr East side burglaries skyrocket By Steve Kemme, Cincinnati Enquirer, June 24, 2010 Eastern Cincinnati neighborhoods have been struck by a rash of burglaries this year. From Jan. 1 to June 16 this year, there were 505 burglaries in police District 2, up from 291 for the same period last year, according to police department crime statistics. That's a 74 percent increase, far more than in any of Cincinnati's five police districts.
July 14, 201014 yr Apparently there's been a rash of robberies and break-ins in Over-the-Rhine. The little convenience store on the corner of Liberty and Sycamore was robbed, and there have been a number of other reported incidents. From what I've heard, it sounds like many of the crimes are being carried about by 10-12 year-old kids.
July 16, 201014 yr robbery? by a ten year old? i doubt it. Some 10/12 year old boys (looked like brothers) pumped gas in my car and mower last night for which i gave them one dollar each. I guess i robbed them.
July 16, 201014 yr No, LIG is serious. This is the third instance I have heard about these kids, described to be about 10-14 years old, robbing someone or something in OTR. One of the instances involved a kid mugging my neighbor with a gun. Apparently there is a kid that has recently been released from jail that is connected to these incidents. He's probably the ring leader. “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” -Friedrich Nietzsche
July 16, 201014 yr My friend was pistol-whipped in front of his house on Flora several days ago. There were two witnesses, and both gave a description of a kid, from 10-15 years old, black, saggy shorts, white t-shirts.

One of the instances involved a kid mugging my neighbor with a gun. Apparently there is a kid that has recently been released from jail that is connected to these incidents. He's probably the ring leader. There was recently a rash of burglaries in the Cleveland Heights/University Heights area. Of course, the burglars pushed their luck and burglarized one too many homes. The police caught them and found they had valuables from 5 different homes. It was three kids, ages 12, 13, and 15. They had a loaded gun and a knife on them when they were caught. It definitely seems like you are hearing more stories of kids at least as young as 12 being involved in violent crimes these days.
July 16, 201014 yr It is the kids that you have to worry about ... there is less rationale going through their heads. I'd rather hear about it being 20-30 year-olds.
November 16, 201014 yr ^ I don't know but it could be worse. Baltimore and New Orleans are pushing 200 murders each. The sprawl belt cities are sky high too. Orlando, Charlotte, Atlanta . The works.
November 16, 201014 yr IIRC, Cincinnati topped its murder rate from last year, and OTR has had 8 murders, double from last year. But yeah, gfi, as much as I sympathize with the thugs that fuck around with property, shooting them to death (for non-home invasion, etc.) will only lead to charges against you.
November 16, 201014 yr no charges if i bury them in the back yard. rofl yeah i know. my boat though is kind of like my home.

November 16, 201014 yr <------ gonna be a cop in a year or so So are you a cop yet? Ha I totally missed this reply many many years ago! The answer is yes! I was hired 1/24/2005 and was at the police academy from 2/05 to 6/05.
November 16, 201014 yr Congratulations richncincy would love to know your perspective on how things in the city are really going since you would understand first hand.
