December 29, 201410 yr And if you scroll through to the District 1 stats (includes downtown and OTR), you can see that violent crime in District 1 is down 23% year over year. There were 11 murders in District 1 in 2013; that's down to 5 in District 1 so far in 2014.
January 4, 201510 yr So homicides were down 13% in the city. Yet people think crime is at all time highs.

And what's incredible is how Bill Cunningham plays to the gun-toting white right-wingers on his radio show(s) and on Fox News, but then is most successful with black females on his garbage TV talk show. His two audiences seem to have no knowledge of each other, yet he has contempt for both because he is a true weasel.

March 3, 201510 yr http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/police/crime-statistics/city-wide-stars-report/ Six homicides so far in 2015 (as of 2/25)--that's compared to 11 over the same time span last year. Lots of theft from cars so far this year. I think that's probably attributable a lot to Downtown and OTR's resurgence--there's so many people parked on the streets that you have so many more opportunities.
March 4, 201510 yr Does anyone know who's doing the redevelopment on the north-east corner of 12th and Race? It looks like they're redeveloping the property, but I can't find any details about the project anywhere. There is a serious drug dealing/abusing issue at the corner and I was hoping to contact the developer to see if they were open to putting in camera(s) on their building. The auditor's site says it's owned by 9487 DRY FORK ROAD LLC, but of course that could be anyone. March 4, 201510 yr Is the the old "Lord's Gym" space? Yes. The LLC owns all the property down 12th Street to Baldwin Alley. They're definitely doing some work there, but I have no idea who's doing it nor what the timetable is. March 4, 201510 yr Unrelated: you two have the save avatar and at first glance I thought you were talking to yourself. Related: Isn't the building being vacated and being renovated? There's a barbershop in this building as well, right?

So that address is some sort of brand protection company, I'm not what the deal is with that but Googling it came up with this PDF: http://city-egov.cincinnati-oh.gov/Webtop/ws/council/public/child/Blob/30724.pdf?m=29616 The address shown there is Urban Sites headquarters, and the name listed there is Urban Sites' president.
March 4, 201510 yr Isn't the building being vacated and being renovated? There's a barbershop in this building as well, right? There was a story awhile back that Urban Sites would be relocating a barber shop to another retail space so they could work on the renovation of a building. This may have been the one, but I'm not totally sure.

April 7, 201510 yr Homicides are down 41% from last year. http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/police/crime-statistics/city-wide-stars-report/
April 9, 201510 yr This crime occurred in Washington, DC., but the Cincinnati media has been quiet about the details of this case: http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/second-suspect-arrested-in-fatal-stabbing-of-lawyer-at-downtown-hotel/2015/04/08/1212d144-de1f-11e4-a500-1c5bb1d8ff6a_story.html
April 9, 201510 yr It was on the front page of the Enquirer's website: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2015/04/08/dc-police-2nd-arrest-made-in-death-of-cincy-area-lawyer/25498161/
April 9, 201510 yr I'm talking about the details of the case -- that the Cincinnati media is ignoring the apparent fact that this outwardly upstanding citizen was cheating on his wife with male prostitutes he met on Craigslist, except in this case the male prostitute was actually a woman.
April 29, 201510 yr Homicide this morning on Vine right outside The Mercer and there was another one close to Neon's last Friday. Overall crime has continued to trend downward in CBD/OTR but hopefully this is a minor increase and not a new pattern. As much progress has been made this type of stuff definitely keeps people away.
April 29, 201510 yr Does anybody happen to have the statistics for how many shootings there have been in OTR each year for the past decade? It would be nice to have this information on hand to combat people who try to turn any incident into an "OTR is still a ghetto" fest.
April 29, 201510 yr Yes not the best news. I imagine it has nothing more than, they were looking for the guy, he was in that area. They hit him and bounced. Everyone knows there are tough areas not only close to but next to completely refurbished buildings. Until South of Liberty is almost completely built out, these things will happen time to time just based on geography of the area. I was living on East 15th for awhile and there was a time late at night that I heard gunshots in the distance. Over the course of 2 minutes the gun shots came closer and closer until it was right on the corner of Walnut and 15th. Obviously it was a running gun fight. Real pity to the people who perished, but I can imagine if you are being chased and shot at, you will run anywhere you can, whether that is a nice area or not.
April 29, 201510 yr Until South of Liberty is almost completely built out, these things will happen time to time just based on geography of the area. What exactly are you saying here? Just push the problem out into another area instead of trying to solve it? As long as it's not around you it's ok huh?
April 29, 201510 yr Considering that OTR South of Liberty will likely be almost fully built out in 5 years, and poverty/crime will still exist in Cincinnati in five years, I think IAGuy39 was simply stating when the problem would be mostly gone from southern OTR.
April 29, 201510 yr Until South of Liberty is almost completely built out, these things will happen time to time just based on geography of the area. What exactly are you saying here? Just push the problem out into another area instead of trying to solve it? As long as it's not around you it's ok huh? No, I wasn't trying to say that. It is just a fact of the matter that there is a lot of illegal activity in the immediate area and because of that, things like this will happen from time to time due to the nature of the illegal activity. And I never said, "as long as it isn't around me it's ok". You don't know me, so don't send a personal attack like that, it isn't appreciated. Why crime happens is a huge subject. All I was pointing out is that illegal activity occurs right around this area, and so shootings can happen in this area and spill into it. Trying to solve it is a whole other discussion, starting with family life, education, and social direction. If you want to see official statistics on this, I can point you in that direction, specifically the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, then we can have a deeper discussion on it. Economic studies have indicated that crime is negatively correlated with income and employment, two parent households, and education levels. For example, in any arbitrary neighborhood, the lower the income level and employment percentage, the lower percentage of two parent households, the lower the education levels, the higher the crime levels will be. That said, I never said push it out to another area instead of solving it, did I? It is a simple fact that as long as there is illegal activity on derelict street corners and vacant buildings, that there is going to be issues with violent crime. And what is within a stones throw of Mercer and Vine Street? Derelict street corners and vacant buildings, and violent crime.
April 29, 201510 yr Until South of Liberty is almost completely built out, these things will happen time to time just based on geography of the area. What exactly are you saying here? Just push the problem out into another area instead of trying to solve it? As long as it's not around you it's ok huh? So we should “solve” the problem of crime before we continue to make our urban centers safe environments? The only thing we can do is repopulate the city's blighted neighborhoods, but even then there will always be some people who prefer to live a life filled with crime. The good news is that overall, crime has continued to fall city wide since a post-riot peak around 2005. While some crime is being shifted out of OTR to other neighborhoods, the majority of it is simple disappearing altogether.
April 29, 201510 yr Does anybody happen to have the statistics for how many shootings there have been in OTR each year for the past decade? It would be nice to have this information on hand to combat people who try to turn any incident into an "OTR is still a ghetto" fest. I don't recall a single white person being killed in Over-the-Rhine since 1995, that's when Michael Bany was shot and killed near Neon's. That was at the very beginning of that chapter in OTR's revival, which by 2000 saw 15-20 bars open on Main and 12th St. That shooting did not slow the area's revival, nor did the 2001 riot. All of those bars will still there until 2003. So in 20 years a random white person hasn't been killed in Over-the-Rhine by a black person (or maybe even the whole city) yet people allow this incredibly unlikely event to motivate their behavior.
April 29, 201510 yr You don't know me, so don't send a personal attack like that, it isn't appreciated. No, that was not attack of you, more of a general statement, I apologize that it came out that way. I took your statement the wrong way, I agree, less blight equals less crime, but it just seems that it moves from one area to another. The more areas that we can invest in the overall general quality of the city and quality of life improves. Hopefully every little improvement has an impact on someone and maybe some people can change for better when they see the improvements around them.

Thank you and I also became a bit over defensive, so I apologize for that. I think the issue is concentration of poverty in one area which, it seems to be has been the case in Over the Rhine for a long time. Breaking things up into more mixed use and less concentration will allow people who do live in poverty to be close to people who don't. This will allow middle class and upper class children to mingle with lower class children in the playgrounds and schools. This will allow more committed parents to be at school board meetings, etc., which will pull up the lower class students who may not see a future for themselves in these concentrated poverty pockets that are prevalant throughout Urban America. It starts with the children and if they can see hope, they will strive for it, every life counts.

It would be nice to have this information on hand to combat people who try to turn any incident into an "OTR is still a ghetto" fest. Captain John reported to the OTR Community Council on Monday, and violent crime was down significantly in 2015 compared to last year. Property crime was mostly flat. He said the report would be up online, but I can't find it. I found the report from District 1 (which includes OTR, West End, Queesnsgate, and Mt Adams): http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/police/crime-statistics/district-1-stars-report/

April 29, 201510 yr With the bar closed for almost a month and the police picking up some of the big offenders recently, it has quieted down quite a bit. I still see drug dealing and some nonsense occurring, but it's about half of what it used to be. Given that it has improved that much in a month is pretty impressive. I'm hoping once/if someone rehabs 1132-1130 Race and the Drop Inn Center moves, that the area will get even better. Here's hoping! May 26, 201510 yr A lot of shootings in OTR in the past month or so. Vine Street in front of The Eagle about a month ago as well as the shooting in the Ziegler Park basketball courts. Then the shooting outside of Club Glitter a couple weeks ago. Now there was another shooting outside of Club Glitter Sunday night/Monday morning. Four days ago there was a shooting (technically in Mt. Auburn) in the 2300 block of Vine Street, and now one yesterday in the 1700 block of Vine (a little north of Liberty).
May 26, 201510 yr Club Glitter is bringing with it the trash that group of owners caters to. They claim it is just bad luck these things are happening outside their establishment but I feel like it's a direct result of their existence. On top of that they referred to the backlash from the gay community over the lack of quality in their establishment by referring to gays as, "sad fags shooting their mouths." This city will be better when they close. Edit: And hopefully no investors are duped into believing their businesses will be successful. The reason they kept it mostly out of the spotlight that they're the same owners as Diamond Palace is that everyone would have known the place was going to bomb. They come into an empty space, put nothing into it (literally the only thing they did at Glitter was hang Ikea mirrors and throw actual glitter all over the ground) and then ride it out for a bit until it dies and then move on. They're leaches.
May 31, 201510 yr Looks like another shooting and murder occurred in Cincinnati last night. Wonder what the murder count is at so far?

There's been a recent spike in shootings, but not actually homicides. http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/police/crime-statistics/city-wide-stars-report/

June 2, 201510 yr Well, this guy is listed as the 27th murder victim of the year on May 28 according to Fox 19. Are you saying there have been seven homicides in the city in the last 3 days? His account is being questioned now and I would hate it if it were just some stupid made up stuff. Either way, stuff like this and other videos going viral of attacks in our cities is just not good-you know how people love to run with the "Ohio cities are violent cesspools' stuff. :( *Not trying to start anything, just wondering if anyone close to there knows anything about this.

June 6, 201510 yr I find it fascinating that this story has gone around the globe, but none of the local media outlets have touched it. I watched it right after it came out and had no reason to doubt it...but now all over the place there are people who are saying it is just a gofundme scam. I guess I thought that this would be covered more locally and there might be more info about it. I guess I was wrong. I really want this story to be on the up and up and all... that the people who have given over $50,000.00 to this are doing something positive and not being taken for a ride, and that this is really a good person who is trying to do something good for his community. It just really touched me I guess.
June 6, 201510 yr This was all over Reddit the other day, and I looked up the address of the supposed community center he was trying to build. It's a house in Evanston and it is owned by his family. However, there are no permits for any construction there. As it is a house, converting it to a community center would require a variance and lots of work in order to make the space compliant as an assembly occupancy. While that doesn't indicate this is a scam, at very least it indicates that there isn't a well thought out plan in place.
