Looks like Cranley is scheming in Clifton.  Suddenly the district 5 headquarters isn't good enough.  So this means that Cranley is going to get the city to overpay on a piece of land somewhere nearby that is owned by a crony.  Then he'll sell the headquarters property to another crony for pennies.  Meanwhile, he'll use it all to force the needless Elmore St. viaduct plan. 

 

If I was Cranley, I'll get the new headquarters built down in South Cumminsville on the Castellini-owned land.  Then the viaduct has to get built, since police wouldn't be able to respond quickly to Clifton.  So then the Castellini land has both the bridge and adjacent police protection.  Then somebody gets to turn the old district 5 into a Wendy's.

To be fair, I've always thought the District 5 headquarters building was extremely small. They probably could use a new building.

This was posted on Reddit - it's another example of serious crime around UC's campus that I have not seen at all in local news:

 

 

Anecdotally I think crime is trending up around UC in the wake of reduced off campus patrols by UCPD, and I think there's some sort of unspoken agreement between UC and the media to not draw too much attention to it.

 

Not everything is some Cranley scheme.

 

He has been scheming since he was 10 years old and has done nothing during his career in public service to earn our trust.

 

I biked past the police station last night around 11pm and the same trucks that appeared in the Channel 19 story were still parked there, in the same positions.  Channel 5 was parked on the street and no doubt was repeating the Channel 19 story.  So it looks like they had people bring down extra personal vehicles and park them in the front lawn.  This morning I drove past it and there were different vehicles in the front lawn but empty parking spots.  So the game continues. 

 

I overheard a convo where 2 guys were talking and discussed how the area around UC is unsafe and is a ghetto. That's when the other guy mentioned a place in OTR to grab food. Interesting times.

Yeah I know the guy who was robbed in the 2300 block of Stratford.  He said the guy made him go to some weird credit union ATM in OTR or downtown and withdrawal $200, plus he happened to have $150 in his wallet.

All victims described the suspect as well spoken and very calm, according to Detective Frank Palmisano.

 

"The suspect takes money at gunpoint from the victims and then makes them drive him to the Postal Family Credit Union on 8th street.  He makes the victims use their own cars.  He then forces the victims to withdraw money from the ATM at the Postal Family Credit Union," Palmisano said in a statement. "The suspect then has the victims drop him off in the general area of Winchell and Wade Walk."

 

Authorities describe the suspect as a black male in his twenties or thirties, weighing between 160 and 180 lbs. The suspect is known to wear a black hoodie with the hood pulled over, black pants, black shorts, knit gloves and a black mask, which could possible be a scarf.

Next person he does this to should run him over with their car after they drop him off at his preferred destination.

Sounds like a giant election year political stunt to me. Make a big deal about the police station being sooo bad that it can't be inhabited.

I've been in the District 5 building a couple of times to pick up "No Parking" signs for and it's definitely a dated and grimy building. Of course, that doesn't mean it's dangerous or unhealthy at all - it just looks like it could use a bit of a refresh/remodel.

 

I wonder if there's some jealousy in play here because of the new District 3 building.

My source here at work tells me that the club was known for having a VIP entrance where you could pay the doorman $100 to not be wanded or frisked.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is the old Annie's which had the bizarre rock formation trough urinal. 

^ There's actually two clubs on this stretch of Kellogg. I think Cameo used to be Adonis. Inner Circle, a little west/north up Kellogg used to be Annie's. If the weather is nice on a Saturday night (as it was this weekend) and you cruise by either of these places between about 1 and 4 AM, you'll see some of the most prolific parking lot pimpin in all of Cincinnati. I happened by once or twice last year on my way to Columbia Tusculum from the burbs and was caught completely by surprise - there were huge crowds with traffic backing up all into the street. It looked like the party was in the parking lot, not the club.

A witness to a murder says the unarmed victim was begging for mercy as the gunman shot him over and over, even after his body fell limp.

 

Police said Jamie Urton, 44, was shot to death after he accidentally hit a 4-year-old boy who dashed into Kenton Street last Friday. Urton stopped but was attacked by people who saw the boy hit.

 

“He didn’t mean to do it, he was bawling his eyes out, saying he was sorry, begging for mercy, basically, and they shot him,” said the witness, who we are not identifying.

 

The witness said she was just a few feet away from where the child was hit and saw the entire event evolve in the street.

 

It all began, according to the witness, when a man who appeared to be with the child began screaming at people driving on the street. The witness says the man was so aggressive it appeared he distracted Urton, who seemed to be unsure why the man was upset.

 

“So he (Urton) was looking out his driver’s side and hit the kid on the right side because he didn’t know what was going on,” the witness said.

 

The man who was with the boy began to attack Urton, who was still in his car, the witness said, but then that man went to tend to the child.

 

Another man then began the fatal attack on Urton, according to the witness.

 

“You could hear him wailing, saying, ‘I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.’ The guy was reaching in the window, beating him up in the window,” the witness said.

 

The altercation escalated when the man pulled a gun.

 

“He just fell, he just stopped and they kept going at, after he stopped. They kept shooting him,” the witness said. “After his arms just dropped and there was no life left in him anymore, they shot him again.”

 

Police said two people now face murder charges in connection with Urton’s death: Deonte Baber, 25, and Jamall Killings, the 4-year-old’s father.

Deters said the video revealed a racial element to the killing. Deters said Baber can be heard on the video, which will not be released, telling a passenger in Urton's car, "get out of here, you're black."

 

"It is disgusting to see something like this happen. It is, for somebody to be targeted – and I’ve had it the other way, where I’ve had black people targeted because of their race, and I don’t care which way it goes ... it's disgusting," Deters said.

 

"People may ask why we haven’t charged ethnic intimidation in this case. It's very simple, it’s a misdemeanor. We’ve charged him with murder. He faces life in prison. If there was any way I could’ve sought the death penalty, would’ve done it..."

 

...Killings was complicit in the crime, Deters said, which is why he's also facing a murder charge and a life sentence, although it was Baber, the "real bad guy," who shot Urton five times.

 

"First of all, after the 4-year-old was struck -- and at no fault to our victim, his view was totally blocked -- the father, Killings, you'd think his first instinct would be to run to see the 4-year-old. No, his first instinct was to run to the car and start beating the driver," Deters said.

The Tensing retrial has been taking place somewhat quietly over the past two weeks. I've been following it and it seems like the defense is doing a better job this time than last time. The prosecution seems to be dropping the ball, as well.  I think this will end up with another hung jury, and afterwards either a plea or another indictment for something like reckless homicide.

Tensing jury deadlocks; judge declares mistrial

 

Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Leslie Ghiz declared a mistrial in the retrial of Ray Tensing shortly after 2 p.m. Friday after the jury of nine women and three men deliberated more than 30 hours over five days before informing Ghiz they could not agree on verdicts for either murder or voluntary manslaughter.

 

For a second time, a jury was unable to agree on whether Tensing was justified when he fatally shot Sam DuBose during a traffic stop in 2015.

Tonight around 9:30 I was witness to a mugging on Court St. between Walnut and Vine.  The perpetrator and victim were too far away from me for me to describe either, and I heard the incident before seeing it, but I'm pretty upset that year after year Court St. remains a spot where this goes on with some regularity.  Luckily someone came to the woman's rescue and called the police but she appeared to have been violently thrown down on the sidewalk and couldn't sit up. 

I'm sorry you had to witness that and it's incredibly frustrating not to be able to do much about it. I haven't been to Court Street in probably three years - has it improved much since then? I am sure the new tower will aid in Court Street's visibility tremendously but it was always a quiet street where I've known three of my friends being mugged at.

I'm on Court Street pretty much 7 days a week, but mostly during the day.  I come in the evening sometimes for Lalo restaurant or Court Street Lobstser Bar.  It is kinda eerily quiet in the evening... not enough eyes on the street

Hopefully with 3CDC beginning to focus on Court Street, the area is going to be cleaned up.

WCPO reports that traffic enforcement has decreased by nearly 40% between 2015 and 2017. It's unfortunate that in an era when urban living is on the rise, the police aren't ticketing people who speed through urban neighborhoods, block transit stops or park on streetcar tracks.

Question: is there any law/ordinance that prohibits absurdly loud vehicles? I'm annoyed by the "cruising" motorcycles that are extremely loud in OTR and downtown. If the police wanted to ticket folks for excessive noise, is that even an option?

That is helpful. Good to know those laws are in the books. I'd love to see the police enforce these laws more rigorously.

The number one problem with Cincinnati law enforcement is the refusal of the stakeholders to accept that Cincinnati is a racially bifurcated city. Half the City consists of minorities living in conditions that promote or at least permit the disorderly lifestyle, like littering, noise, public misbehavior, etc. The non-minority half of the City population is further bifurcated into an ever decreasing number of poor white families, artifacts of a time when unskilled work was available in the City. A small percentage.

 

Accordingly, any attempt to increase the arrest of disorderlies in the City is immediately met with claims of racial bias. In fact, there is de facto racial bias to the City arrests. Go to Room A on any Monday and one will be hard pressed to find more than a sprinkling of white persons waiting for arraignment. The overwhelming majority will be persons of color. 70, 80, 90%.

 

If one wanted to have racially balanced enforcement on stopping noisy motorcycles in the City, first a person of color, then not, arrests would end.

A statewide loud pipe ban would be less racist, but then the Harley Hillbillies would go bonkers in the rest of the state. But... they'll all be dead in 10 years.

The Enquirer refuses to buck the Cranley line and place any solid blame on CPD for totally blowing it with the Seven Hills student death.

The critical passage from the article:

 

Body camera footage shows no sign either officer got out of the cruiser at the school. It shows them searching only one of five potential lots. The one they searched was not the one where Kyle was found.

 

I posted elsewhere on this site that I'm not in a race to blame these officers, because clearly this was a very unusual situation.  But the hurry to pile this on the 911 call center was motivated by a need to desire to protect the police and to twist an arm to get Harry Black fired.
