June 6, 201510 yr I find it fascinating that this story has gone around the globe, but none of the local media outlets have touched it. I watched it right after it came out and had no reason to doubt it...but now all over the place there are people who are saying it is just a gofundme scam. I guess I thought that this would be covered more locally and there might be more info about it. I guess I was wrong. I really want this story to be on the up and up and all... that the people who have given over $50,000.00 to this are doing something positive and not being taken for a ride, and that this is really a good person who is trying to do something good for his community. It just really touched me I guess. Interesting. The Enquirer's only contribution to the story is a video of the neighbor describing the attack. No accompanying story or anything. Not even the original video. http://www.cincinnati.com/videos/news/2015/06/06/28615017/
June 7, 201510 yr This was all over Reddit the other day, and I looked up the address of the supposed community center he was trying to build. It's a house in Evanston and it is owned by his family. However, there are no permits for any construction there. As it is a house, converting it to a community center would require a variance and lots of work in order to make the space compliant as an assembly occupancy. While that doesn't indicate this is a scam, at very least it indicates that there isn't a well thought out plan in place. Kinda like the guy that walked 20 miles each way back and from work? People are thinking of elaborate ways to make money.
June 7, 201510 yr Well the Cincinnati.com article had some info. At least there is backup for his story. He has made renovations including new windows and painting, etc. and neighbors have seen him working on it frequently and his mother also supported the story. There is certainly evidence of the assault and how it went down (pretty much like he said). He might not have the right permits etc. at this time, maybe he is just getting started on making basic repairs on the property and the 'community center' was something down the line-sounds like that might have been waiting for if/when money became available, which it has at least now. Also filed a police report. I imagine he is hardly the first guy who gets jumped and doesn't immediately file a report, given his situation and all. I wonder how much crime simply is not reported, no snitching, etc. :( What caught my eye was this: "The Evanston area that Ronald Moon describes in his video shows evidence of violence this week. Thursday afternoon, a man was arrested and charged with felonious assault after he jumped in front of a vehicle in the 1800 block of Kinney Ave., pointed a gun at a victim and ordered the victim to strip off his clothing, arrest records state." :-o Does not sound like an ideal neighborhood. (kind of reminds me of some of the crazy stuff that happened in my old Wilshire Heights neighborhood in Cbus. lol ) link to the story: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2015/06/06/cincinnati-man-wants-to-build-community-center/28526585/ Sounds like he wanted something that specialized in things that the nearby community center did not provide, and he has a lot of connections through his music, etc. Hope it works out for him somehow.
June 7, 201510 yr Thought the gun violence was bad in Cleveland or Cincinnati? 5 killed, 27 wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago. June 8, 201510 yr http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/police/crime-statistics/ 30 homicides as of May 30. More than anyone would like (obviously even one is too many), but still down 9% from last year at this time despite recent spike in violence. I found this really surprising for some reason (perhaps because you tend to think of crime local). Baltimore had 43 homicides in May, and has 115 for the year already. According to the story, Baltimore reached a low of 197 homicides in 2011, down from a high of 353 in 1993. There are about 620,000 people in Baltimore--just more than 2x Cincinnati's population. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/05/31/baltimore-homicides-worst-in-40-years/28284839/
June 19, 20159 yr Officer and suspect exchanged gunfire at Roe and Whetsel just now in Madisonville. Officer being transported to UC Medical Center for gunshot wound in the chest. Suspect shot and in custody.
June 19, 20159 yr I wondered what was going on--I had to take 71S this morning and I saw at least ten police cars headed north on 71.
June 19, 20159 yr Multiple news sources are reporting that both the Officer and suspect have died... Edit: Chief: 'We lost one of our best today' "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

June 19, 20159 yr FOP: "Officer killed was working OT because of staffing levels" Is that really relevant? I really hope the FOP doesn't politicize this to try to get even more police hired. This man was going to do this regardless of who the officer was who responded. If you're going to do suicide by cop, why would try to kill the officer?
June 19, 20159 yr FOP: "Officer killed was working OT because of staffing levels" Is that really relevant? I really hope the FOP doesn't politicize this to try to get even more police hired. This man was going to do this regardless of who the officer was who responded. If you're going to do suicide by cop, why would try to kill the officer? It's not relevant, at all, especially considering many new police officers have been hired since Cranley took office and money was specifically set aside for overtime to increase police visibility (it wasn't a matter of not enough police officers, it was funding to allow the officers we do have to be on patrol as much as they want). The FOP (and our local media) should apologize for politicizing a tragedy just hours after it occurred. It didn't take long for drivel like this to appear:
June 20, 20159 yr I agree it is not relevant. FOP president Kathy Harrell has attended City Council's Law Committee and been on WLW multiple times stating more officers are needed. I'm not surprised she (and the Enquirer) politicized this tragedy. "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
June 20, 20159 yr The timing might have been in poor taste, but depending on the circumstances, it might've been a potential factor and worthy of at least some discussion
June 22, 20159 yr The timing might have been in poor taste, but depending on the circumstances, it might've been a potential factor and worthy of at least some discussion What exactly would be the bearing of whether or not the officer was on OT? This is just another disgusting politicizing of a tragedy. Heard that years ago Cincy stopped putting 2 officers in cruisers to save $. Some think you should have 2 in patrol cars. IDK if anything can be done about a devious evil plot to set up a cop with a bogus 911 call, and when he arrives you pull out a gun and shot him. It is possible that Officer Kim waited a split second to long to fire (maybe because of recent police shootings) and that cost him his life.
June 23, 20159 yr Or it could have been the fact that the mother was in the picture. We'll never know... "In that district, during the day, officers typically do not have partners, police said. More than half of police patrols involve officers working alone in their cruisers. Two-officer patrols are scheduled based on the time of day, the neighborhood and other factors." District 2's Capt. Jeff Butler was on Bill Cunningham Monday and gave additional details on Overtime. You also hear from Mayor Cranley, Derek Bauman, and Kathy Harrell. June 23, 20159 yr http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/crime/2015/06/23/over-the-rhine-shooting/29163967/ Another OTR shooting at Findlay Park. Victim is a known player to police.
June 28, 20159 yr There has been 38 homicides in the city of Cincinnati this year. That is on pace for 76 for the year. That's getting close to the record of 81. Most of those homicides happened the past 3 months.
July 5, 20159 yr Teens these days are a disgrace. How did we get to this point?IF they say lack of job? Come on they don't have a mortgage to worry about.
July 5, 20159 yr ^Based on what exactly are you qualifying that statement? Because the realities of crime (as a whole) are that it has dropped substantially since the 70s. Teen violence at that point was significantly higher than it is today, it just wasn't all over the media like it is now. If we're using facts and not anecdotal nonsense teens today are significantly less problematic than they were a generation ago.
July 5, 20159 yr ^ If you live in the Cincinnati area. You know why I made that statement. The All-Star game is 9 days away and we have this garbage running around the city.
July 5, 20159 yr Ditto what Jmicha said. This is all media hype. There's is definitely still a problem that needs continued focus and attention, but to say that it's gotten worse is simply inaccurate.
July 5, 20159 yr I DO live in Cincy. I live on Race Street just south of 15th. It's all BS media fearmongering. This isn't an issue that has gotten worse with time, it's an issue that has become less of a problem but now takes up way more focus from the media.
July 5, 20159 yr I agree the media is not helping. But something still needs to be done. Toronto has 26 murders. A city the size of the entire metro of Cincinnati. The city has 42 murders. Why can't we be as safe as Toronto???
July 5, 20159 yr I agree the media is not helping. But something still needs to be done. Toronto has 26 murders. A city the size of the entire metro of Cincinnati. The city has 42 murders. Why can't we be as safe as Toronto??? Because we're in a different country with drastically different rules for parenting, gun use, media relations, youth education, etc. I think we all agree that there is a problem, but it's not a Cincinnati problem and we shouldn't be acting like it's worse here than anywhere else in the country. We are, in fact, a national model on how to properly police an urban community. Every time the media and Cranley attack he reputation of the chief, he's actively eroding that balance, trust and understanding our police have worked so hard to achieve with the community. Cranley dumping a bunch of new, quickly trained officers on the streets certainly isn't helping either. It's watering down those bonds that have been built.
July 5, 20159 yr I saw the kids pictured in the brawl with officers earlier in the evening. I noticed them because they were wearing goofy-colored shorts. But I didn't sense that they were out to cause trouble. We had big fights at the Catholic high school football games but the local media didn't pay any attention even though there were often TV cameras at the games.
July 5, 20159 yr Sorry in advance for an emotional rant. I'm not an alarmist and I agree the media are pandering POS's but the fact is that there is an element of crime running loose in high profile areas of our city. The police need to draw some lines in the sand. The city has way too much momentum and is attracting way too many "samplers" to let a small group sabotage it.
July 5, 20159 yr Jake your comparison of this to a fight at a GCL High School is patently absurd. There is video on social media starting to go viral and I wouldn't be surprised if this is national news this week. www.cincinnatiideas.com
July 6, 20159 yr I think I'm missing something here... what are you all talking about? Sorry for being out of the loop.

July 6, 20159 yr The Saturday night hip hop concerts on Fountain Square routinely result in violence. This isn't the first time this year the event has required police intervention. I'm going to state the obvious - you don't get a lot of assaults, attacks on officers, etc. during the Indie, Salsa, or Folk nights.

July 6, 20159 yr Huh. I didn't hear anything about this. Spent this evening watching the soccer game at Fountain Square and spent a while Saturday night at Washington Park groovin with the Deadheads. Both full of people but no problems at all. Can't wait to hear what the co workers from the burbs have to say tomorrow.
July 6, 20159 yr Sad that this has happened to him. But he had several opportunities to get away from them. He even taunted them, but he stood his ground.
July 6, 20159 yr ^Incidents like this are a major threat to our efforts to expand public transportation. Unfortunately lots of people view transit as a way for a crowd like Saturday night to gather. The 2001 riots had a lot to do with MetroMoves failing in 2002. Anything that happens at Government Square will be associated with the bus system in people's minds. www.cincinnatiideas.com
July 6, 20159 yr No matter where you are, if you mix crunk music, with crunk people, it is never a good mix no matter where it is. Bad thing about this is it's in the City's living room and two officers were assaulted. it is embarrassing and I hope that all the suspects were arrested and receive their due punishment in court today.
July 6, 20159 yr Sad that this has happened to him. But he had several opportunities to get away from them. He even taunted them, but he stood his ground. Yeah, we don't know what led up to this, but he certainly didn't get out of there when he had the chance. Instead he strutted around and asked for more, which makes me suspect that he started the whole thing.
July 6, 20159 yr Jake your comparison of this to a fight at a GCL High School is patently absurd. I saw things get totally out of control several times at Catholic school events and the police were never called. Like the time some guy punched his girlfriend at a dance at Music Hall and she was carried out on a stretcher. The police weren't called -- no snitching!
July 6, 20159 yr It seems wise to not speculate until we find out more official information on the situation. Otherwise we're no better than the media comparing us to Baltimore or Ferguson and anyone who might stumble upon this thread when searching for "Cincinnati Crime" on google might get some misinformation which has a way of taking on a life of its own. All we know is that there was a group of unruly kids and a guy eggs them on resulting in his beating. We don't know what officially lead up to that nor does it do anyone any good comparing us to cities with far worse problems. This wasn't a policeman killing some unarmed person who wasn't committing a crime, it's police officers being brought in to stop a conflict that started unrelated to them.
July 6, 20159 yr The Saturday night hip hop concerts on Fountain Square routinely result in violence. This isn't the first time this year the event has required police intervention. Yeah, we don't know what led up to this, but he certainly didn't get out of there when he had the chance. Instead he strutted around and asked for more, which makes me suspect that he started the whole thing. I’m surprised to see so much victim blaming here. If you beat someone’s face into a bloody pulp, you’re the problem, no matter how much shit the other guy was talking. If you stand around and cheer it on, you’re part of the problem as well. If you stand around and record it, you’re either an idiot or smart enough to know that’s the best way to bring attention to it later. My point still stands, though. This event seems to attract a much more violent crowd than any of the other public events the city and 3CDC host on Fountain Square. They should reconsider hosting it in the future. Canceling it would obviously draw protests and create more strife, but they could simply not schedule it next year, or replace it with a similar, more peaceful genre (if they want to keep the events politically correct), and schedule it at 11:00 AM. The reality of the situation is that the bars, hotels, and restaurants around Fountain Square will take a hit in business on what should be the busiest night of the week because of this event.
July 6, 20159 yr Pointing out that a person was seemingly egging on an unruly crowd which played a part in his beating isn't victim blaming, it's pointing out the realities presented in the videos of the incident. It doesn't mean it's his fault he was hospitalized (which nobody actually suggested), but it doesn't make his actions intelligent nor free from scrutiny. The moment he got involved (though a firsthand account makes it seem more like he was the cause of the incident in the first place by mouthing off drunkenly to the teens) he stopped being an innocent bystander. Being an idiot doesn't justify being beaten unconscious but he's not some randomly selected person in a crowd.
July 6, 20159 yr These unruly mob type of situations happen much too often in the summer in Downtown Cincinnati. It's absolutely embarrassing, and it isn't just tied to the Saturday night hip hop shows. Remember Taste of Cincinnati last year when *hundreds* of teens roamed through the streets of downtown assaulting people (also think 2 people were shot then). Are we supposed to just cancel every large event downtown in the summer, or make every event be at 11AM? Cincinnati is still a very poor city. We have the second highest rate of youth poverty in the entire country. It should not be a surprise that there is such prevalent ghetto behavior downtown, because far too many of our citizens live in impoverished, ghetto communities. As another poster said, Fountain Square is the city's living room, which doesn't just mean the living room for white families. These kids and young adults are going to continue to be hanging out on Fountain Square and Government Square, and unfortunately I don't see these type of events ending any time soon. It's embarrassing for visitors to have to encounter such situations, but really it's indicative of the real city of Cincinnati- not the white washed version that the CVB and 3CDC like to sell.
July 6, 20159 yr ^ Those are my thoughts as well. What can you do to curb this type of behavior, considering this is what the city is? You want to be fair and have events that all people enjoy, but at the same time, are they going to bring in 20 police officers everytime they have an event that caters to a certain type of crowd? That doesn't seem feasible. The worst part is that there doesn't seem to be a respect for police, especially in this situation. Is this because the Cincinnati police have not done a good job to lead to this disrespect, or is it a sympton of what is going on nationwide and subsequently what has sparked riots in two major metropolitan areas in the USA? I believe it is the latter and it is sad that these things happen and that young men feel hopeless enough about their situation that they would engage in punching and assaulting police officers and beating another person half to death.
July 6, 20159 yr This story has made its way to the Drudge Report: http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2015/07/horror-black-youths-mock-and-laugh-at-unconscious-and-bloody-white-male-victim-after-july-4th-beatdown-video/ ETA: AND the WCPO story made it to Real Clear Politics.
July 6, 20159 yr Funny how different media outlets call different events. This happened the same weekend in Tampa. http://www.tmz.com/2015/07/06/hulk-hogan-beach-bar-fight-video/
