East Liverpool never fails to impress. Gritty, yet clean, run-down, yet preserved, hilly, yet flat...you get the idea.

It is definitely a city of contrasts. Thank you for the photos.

^^why were Youngstown thugs rioting in Zanesville. How far apart are the cities?

East Liverpool (aka "ELO") is about 30ish miles south of Youngstown - the former University Club (the bldg. being demo'd) was part of the drug trade route between Youngstown and Pittsburgh. They set up shop there because 1. they knew that ELO police didn't have the manpower to handle organized crime of that level; 2. just off Rt. 7/11 gave them easy highway access; 3. With ELO being in economic decline, it would be easy to recruit people desperate to make a buck. For example: http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/ohn/news/14April2006_2.html

So the University Club became a popular (infamous) place, and it reached a fever pitch when about 200+ people began rioting. I forget how many cops from outside the area had to be brought in, but it was absurd.

^interesting. Thanks.

crime-ridden, yet safe...

East Liverpool is certainly depressed, but I find it's downtown to be one of the most interesting urban environments in Ohio.  It definitely feels like a larger city than it is, because it used to be.  Good pics, Ink.

WTF

^It's the FUN ZONE!!!!

I wonder if that lady is going into the FUN ZONE!!!! haha

100_3373.jpg

Something about this reminds me of some postindustrial cities in Japan - the rotting density. Abandoned to the point that there was never a point in tearing it out with the hope of something else. Awesome.

I think the FUN ZONE used to be called SPLATZ!

Taller buildings then expected, I want to see old photos of East Liverpool.

Mingo Junction > East Liverpool

Noooo!

and you missed the hot dog shoppe? tsk tsk.

Their "M's" are clearly upside down "W's".

Another Ohio River city which has seen better times.  I drove through there a few years ago and it seemed to have a bit more life than some of its neighboring towns, although clearly it has suffered due to plant closures and internal migration.  Still, maybe that is the secret charm of these semi-abandoned towns: a window into the past.  Anther good thing about stagnation is that fewer of the grand old buildings get modernized, as no one had any money to waste on upgrades.  There are exceptions

The poor building looks like its about to sneeze and then break down in tears for the sixties remodel.  Glass bricks and beautystone.....yikes.

Love the whole photo series!  Thanks for the tour.
