I don't know CDM.  It doesn't move me like the national civil rights museum in Memphis, or the Holocaust museum in Milwaukee.

Well, it isn't really suppose to "move" you but to simply inform about the tragedies of this country's history (and does a damn good job explaining, particularly the marble exhibit).

I disagree.  It's a given its to educate, but I personally just didn't feel it.  I don't know what it is...and I can't describe it, but there was no emotion.  I left wanting more.

I felt the opposite.  I personally "felt" it, as a black historian and as a "person of color" and the metaphoric exhibits (the marbles; the log cabin; the cloth; etc) was more than enough to "feel" and grasp the horrors of slavery and human injustice.

The request by the Freedom Center actually is the final installment of $15 million that had been appropriated by the state to construct the facility, Freedom Center spokesman Paul Bernish has said.

Township trustees, what hell is the big deal?  The state promised the Freedom Center money to build the facility and now they are making good on their promise.  So what exactly is there to oppose?

do they have any say on this at all?  I can't imagine they do.  I think this is like they City Council resolution opposing the war in iraq.

^In other words, an abuse of their power.  They presume to speak for their constituents on matters they were not elected for, didn't run on, and have no power over.  That kind of pomposity is what led me to vote against Alicia Reese in 2003...she was a disappointment anyway, but I'd never vote for someone who would presume to speak for me on matters they have no business in.  Guess I'm a curmudgeon that way...

Here are a couple of stories regarding the trustees' opposition to the funding.  I post these stories from the Community Press newspapers because they seem to contain more quotes and info than the brief, watered-down versions that appear in the Enquirer.  (Yes, I do realize that both papers are run by the same entity.)

Trustees ask state not to support Freedom Center

BY LIZ CAREY | COMMUNITY PRESS STAFF WRITER

ANDERSON TWP. - Anderson Township trustees passed a resolution at their Nov. 16 meeting voicing their opposition to the Ohio General Assembly capital grant budget request from Hamilton County.

And they're letting everyone know about it.

I really enjoyed my trip to the Freedom Center and recomend everyone to go.

The trustees don't support FREEDOM!!!

Freedom isn't free...(no, there's a hefty f**king fee)

I'm still not sure why these townships oppose funding the Freedom Center.  If they are hard up for cash, maybe it's time to incorporate and impose an income tax on their residents.  Or maybe they are just pro-slavery.

^Thinking the latter...

yeah, they aren't opposing subsidies to the art museum or union terminal.  (then again the issue might be that the freedom center said 'they wouldn't ask for tax money', which I don't even know if that is true but people say it a lot so who knows?)

Or maybe they are just pro-slavery.

OOOOOHHHHHHHHHH....take that 'burb trustees, BIZAOU!!!!!!!!!! :whip:

I don't know if anyone else noticed the huge discussion that had been held on the Enquirer's website pertaining to the issue of giving the Freedom Center the $2 million or not.  But the comments were overwhelmingly negative (as one could expect)...either way the state has gone ahead and passed the budget issues through, regardless of what those conservative extremists think.  Good Job!!!

From MiddletownJournal.com:

AK Steel donates $750K to Freedom Center

By Dave Greber

AK Steel Corp. announced Thursday afternoon a $750,000 gift to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

The Middletown-based steelmaker's donation is in response to the Center's private fundraising campaign, which has a $10 million goal.

I tried to go on MLK day, but there was a line that wrapped around to building just to get in.  I had already been so I let other people have the free admission, but it was a great thing to see.

Its good to hear that those idiots from the 'burbs may be the minority about this issue.  Sure the museum may be struggling, but its good to see some good corporate citizens step up for the arts in Cincinnati....Great job!!!

I give it two more years before this museum is moved down south(Atlanta). Better care should've been taken in evaluating if Cincinnati was even the right location.  As far as the building, who knows, maybe it could be used as a school.

Hum...if it would move, it might be interesting to demolish the building and develop the block like the rest of the Banks.

^uhhh...you don't really hear of museums relocating, why because they are non-profit institutions...its not worth the trouble of moving.  All the costs/fundraising/and other troubles far outweigh the maybe small benefits from relocating somewhere else.

That's never going to happen...period!

I was just playing with Mr. West Chester. ;)

Lynch named Freedom Center co-chair

BY ERIC HORNBECK | [email protected]

The Rev. Damon Lynch Jr. has been elected presiding co-chairman of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the center announced Thursday.

"I'm excited and I'm looking forward to the challenges of the new position," Lynch said.

http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061216/NEWS01/612160361/1056/COL02

Thought I'd add this too.  Oh, also the Freedom Center got its $2M in the state capital budget.  I don't think it was posted.  In fact, I don't even recall seeing a story about that.

'Slavery Today' opens at museum

THE ENQUIRER

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center's new temporary exhibit opens to the general public today.

"Invisible: Slavery Today" is a 2,700-square-foot, multimedia exhibit about contemporary slavery around the world. It features video, photos, hands-on activities and interactive kiosks.

At first I confused Damon Lynch Jr. with Damon Lynch III...the younger one ought to be in jail for inciting the 2001 riots, and I was apalled that the Freedom Center would put him at its helm - but happily they didn't - this is his dad.

I initially had the same thoughts you did, and I was nervous.

City fights over museum $$

BY JANE PRENDERGAST | [email protected]

May 7, 2007

DOWNTOWN - Cincinnati’s debate over giving $4 million to four cultural institutions – including $1 million to the Underground Railroad Freedom Center – continues this afternoon at city council’s finance committee.

Councilman Chris Bortz says his colleagues agreed last year as they finalized the budget to divide the $4 million for capital projects equally between the Freedom Center, Music Hall, the Museum Center and Cincinnati Art Museum.

I'm going to try to take my wife to this in the next week or so, what's the cost to get in?

$12 for adults...you can find more info here:

http://www.freedomcenter.org/visit/

I have never paid to go, and I've been through twice already (fascinating stuff).  There always seems to be some kind of deal to get in at a discount (especially for students).

BY JANE PRENDERGAST | CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

May 30, 2007

DOWNTOWN - The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center finds itself in the middle of a money fight at City Hall.

Thanks to some City Council politics, officials of the riverfront museum went from being fairly certain they'd get $1 million from the city this year - the first contribution since the center opened in 2004 - to now just hoping they'll get something.

Cincy Freedom Center requests $3.7M in funds

BY LUCY MAY | CINCINNATI BUSINESS COURIER

February 12, 2008

DOWNTOWN - Officials at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center are seeking more than $3.7 million in state capital funds from Ohio lawmakers.

The riverfront museum wants to make adjustments to some of its galleries and internal spaces, but the biggest chunk of the money would go toward reconfiguring its Second Street entrance to make the facility more inviting from downtown, said Freedom Center CEO Don Murphy.

They did get screwed on the Banks and hopefully the correct some of the factual errors in the history section, presidents in the wrong years. I'm okay with some public money for it.

Website lets traveler map Ohio's Underground

CINCINNATI (AP) — Ohio's Division of Tourism has joined the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in promoting Underground Railroad sites around the state.

So any idea where the next kiosks will be? Wilberforce? Westerville? Piqua?

To me, Oberlin and Ripley are obvious. But I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with Zanesville's part, beyond the museum that's there.

Is the freedom center just a place for school field trips.?. I've driven past it and generally thats all I see there.
