If situations were reversed, I would hope they'd be selling out of Youngstown Penguins t-shirts in Ann Arbor - as Jim Rome says, that's what makes college sports so fantastic - the hate!

If the situation were reversed, huge swaths of Columbus would no longer exist. And they wouldn't be selling Youngstown shirts in Ann Arbor. At least, not in my day.

I somehow doubt that.  I'm pretty sure they'd be selling Youngstown shirts in Ann Arbor in any time period (okay, so the Roaring 20's people didn't give a ...).  While I never really got the whole Michigan/OSU rivalry thing and generally like the University of Michigan and see the "rivalry" as more "one-way" (heavily on OSU), I think it would be illogical for them not to sell those Penguin t-shirts in a simple, spiteful manner.  I mean, it's football, folks...not the Bavarian waltz.

Right, I meant selling out of the shirts, I'm sure they'd be selling some. But I think U-M fans (at least those in the student body) generally care more about beating OSU rather than just having OSU lose. It might be because Michigan has other big rivals.

I was there just after some of the biggest Cooper collapses, and during a Michigan national championship. I recall a lot more anti-MSU, anti-ND, and anti-PSU shirts than anti-OSU shirts. I guess there was the old standby *uckeyes shirt.

OSU is not a fan of having rivals...they'd rather try to royally screw them (financially) in their scheduling contracts.  Hence the reason why UC say piss off, we can get better deals elsewhere (see Georgia, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech).  OSU has done this time and time again, not only in football but also basketball.  This is the main reason why I hate the Bucks.

Well, you answered why Michigan cared about Notre Dame and MSU more than OSU during your tenure: it was the John Cooper Years.  I'm sure Youngstown State cared about butterflies and jamocha shakes than caring about OSU football during that dark period of history.  But otherwise, I totally agree that is the reason why Michigan is "less caring" (more rivalries).

Yes, because Ohio State is the only school to royally screw potential rivalries.  I mean, the SHAME!  Our rivalry could be The Bearcats!  What a glorious day that would be.

;)

Well...the Bearcats are probably the second best football team in the state, they have an up and coming program and are in a BCS conference.  I don't see why OSU wouldn't want to schedule them.  Oklahoma, Georgia and Virginia Tech obviously thought it was a good move.  I guess OSU must know something that those programs don't.

Well, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Virginia Tech also want to win, don't they?

*yawn*

And the second best team in the state is actually Elder.  Get it right.

OSU. The "S" Stands for "Schadenfreude."

Are you a msu fan or just bounce back & forth to which team is better, msu or um.

This looks like a long season. I'm holding out hope that this ends like 1998, with an 0-2 start and a Big Ten championship. Somehow, I doubt it.

This thread just shows how much more OSU fans care about U-M than vice versa. While I think that Carr's time has come, there's a certain irony to comparing him to Cooper, since Carr beat him 5-1 I think.

He's definately a University of Michigan fan.

Thank you, and that's something most OSU fans have no clue about. Ohio State cares about the game a hell of a lot more than Michigan does. Michigan is OSU's only regular rival. Michigan has Michigan State, Notre Dame, THEN Ohio State.

HaHa, when's the last time the UM-ND/MSU/PSU game meant anything to anyone???  The Big Ten Championship and National Title hopes are usually on the line during the OSU-UM game so if UM fans are too bitter to see the Buckeyes as their most important rivalry than that's too bad.  P.S. I work with ND alums and they don't care about UM, it's all about USC.

AND UC just beat Oregon.

...You're not confusing the top-20 Oregon Ducks for the unranked Oregon State Beavers, are you?

What poll are you looking at???   Oregon is not in the top 25 in either national poll.  (prior to UM-UO game)

^ Correction, UO is now ranked No. 17, damn ESPN.com hasn't updated the rankings yet.

PSU has a bigger rivalry with OSU than michigan.

OSU is michigans most important rivalry by far! But its easy to make excuses when your having a bad year/decade. They don't like losing to Ohio State any more than Ohio State to michigan.

Wisconsin and Ohio State have to be the favorites in the Big Ten right now.  Illinois is the main dark horse, then Michigan.  Don't count the Wolverthings out...yet.

There's not a rivalry out there that can touch the Madonna U. vs. Providence Hospital Nursing School. Go Bedpans!

LOL ^

I know a few michigan fans & they never talk about michigan state, Its always Ohio State bla bla bla...

Michigan has never cared about football as much as Ohio State does (no one does), period.

Thats why they fill a stadium with over 100,000 fans.

Stop making excuses...

Ann Arbor on a Saturday and Columbus on a Saturday are not even comparable, but I don't expect you to know that.

Those cities aren't comparable any day of the week!!  But I don't expect you to know that!!

OK mass media, drop the conspiracy against michigan, PLEASE!!  At the request of all ohio State fans...

LOL ^

Why would they talk about MSU to an OSU fan?

I have no doubt that the amount of national attention has amplified the OSU-UM rivalry, but in Michigan, and among the student bodies, the UM-State game is bigger than outsiders imagine.

Sounds like you have a complex about something, sorry!!  I'm not going to resort to calling people from michigan names as I know some people from there & they would probably be embarrassed to hear your comments.  Peace out Man, or whatever!!

Personal observation from a guy who grew up in Michigan and then moved to Ohio:

In Michigan, the UM-OSU game is a high-profile sporting event with lots of history.

In Ohio, the UM-OSU game is a year round, quasi-religious, trance-induced state.

why don't you just move to Michigan and save us ALL the grief. What is your deal?

why don't you just move to Michigan and save us ALL the grief. What is your deal?

Yeah really!! If It doesn't mean that much why are you so hyped up about it?  What gives...?

^ Thanks!

If you REALLY wanted to move back to michigan, the only thing stopping you is that you don't want to...  And go ahead & give me the excuses. Unless your in the military & stationed in Ohio than there is no excuse good enough if you really wanted to go.  But I'm sure you'll have one, lol.

Both of you children are done.

Of course not. Ann Arbor puts Cowtown to "Ohiah" shame. Ann Arbor is more diverse, cosmopolitan, educated, and has the healthiest downtown in the Midwest. The foreign-born percentage is through the roof, and it attracts the best and brightest in the world. It's a liberal intellectual town, not a cheap beer drinking football town.

Sorry, had to *LOL* at that one.
