Scranton Peninsula is prime land near the heart of downtown that could be reasonably used, as a whole, in a new manner.  I was curious as to what anyone could come up with as far as ideas and concepts for that area of land.  I could envision a smaller scale but very intresting development that would consist of a web of canals criss-crossing the land and having 3-6 story buildings amongst the canals in a Hamburg or Amsterdam sort of idea.  The result would be a completely new, intergrated, and distinctly diffrent neighborhood to cleveland.  Pedestrian bridges could connect to new development on the west bank of the cuyahoga.  The result could be stunning.  What are your ideas?

Examples of ideas:

Java Island, Netherlands: Imagine these canals opening to a cleaner cuyahoga with views of cleveland rising across the river, the west bank entertainment within minutes of your amazingly chic new residence in the heart of.... Cleveland...  hell yeah.

This is a really cool canal, sans Christmas lights.

I think that some pretty neat development could happen in this area, but it would have to be a bit better-connected to downtown.

I think this was proposed a few years back (2002-3ish) by some cat named Scaravelli, or something like that. FC wanted no part of it, and they own most of the land.

Any ideas of how much that whole plot of land would go for?

Awesome ideas and great pics!!!

I would also like to see a boardwalk residential/retail community as part of it too.

I always thought we could have our own little Borneo Sporenburg along the Cuyahoga!

Why, did you win the English Lottery today too? I did, according to e-mails I keep getting!

No I cannot say I have.  Perhaps after my internship at Goldman Sachs and a few years later I might be back.  We will have to see.

Forgot I had this... although I may have posted it somewhere else on the board.

personally, I've always thought that was a perfect place for a mega stadium.

this way when people left they would have to go thru a rebuilt, updated, reinvented neighborhood/district to return home.

Now, I would love to see 3 or 4 towers ( of at least 25 stories) and staggered height townhomes & apartments on the land

Crocker park ON THE RIVER!!!

But, seriously.  I would just be happy with a housing developemnt.  Start with a ring of townhomes, and then if there continues to be interest, throw in a condo tower or two.  Just like what Forest City did here in Chicago's south loop

Many years ago I was had a discussion with a City Arch. employee at a party and he mentioned that they did an entire site plan for the Peninsula for Forest City (sounded liked it followed new urbanism principals with lots of townhouses and apartments above retail, pocket parks etc...this was all verbal with lots of alcohol flowing and quite some time ago so don't hold me to it) but that for whatever reason (he just rolled his eyes) Forest City had little interest in following through.  It is ashame that FC is so active across the nation and ignores a prime piece of real estate right outside the windows of its headquarters (although I am sure it will cost a pretty penny to develop as I bet it is a environmental disaster).

I think that may be the site plan shown just a few posts up.  Unless there is another floating around?

Seems like it would make a great location for a Battery Park-like project.

bring on java islands netherlands -- that's perfect!
