July 7, 200816 yr Channel 5 has a video report about the garage coming down and they showed this god-awful squatty picture. They had some normal shots of how the building will look, but this one cracked me up. http://www.wlwt.com/video/16804562/ What an odd take on the story. They mainly focused on the fall out from the immediate loss of parking, but then did not mention the number of new spaces that will be a part of the project...or the spaces that are a part of 303 Broadway (aka QCS I). The whole story was just odd.
July 7, 200816 yr These photos are from Sunday 07/06/08. I was the last civilian to take photos of the garage and the last person to be kicked out by a security guard: View from top deck: Looking north up Sycamore St.: The home office: Bonus:

July 8, 200816 yr The hotshot executive, who ever it may be, will have one hell of a view on that top floor of this building;)
July 8, 200816 yr Thanks for the pics JMeck. I love the one of the garage down FWW. I can't wait to see that view change.
July 8, 200816 yr I never liked those skywalks. There should be an underground tunnel for the jail, in fact put the whole jail underground. Cool pics Jmeck! I have never been inside that garage.
July 8, 200816 yr The jail is the one i don't have a problem with. the other one is the open air skywalk across plum? between 3rd and 4th
July 8, 200816 yr That is between 5th and 6th and connects two exclusively P&G buildings, no public access.
July 9, 200816 yr That garage was convenient and big, but it was in bad shape by the end. The last few months there was exposed rebar, bits of concrete lying around.
July 9, 200816 yr Rob Alpern says there will be a webcam for the Queen City Square developlment site once construction (not demolition) begins.

Tower place parking garage has been like that for years---talk about something that needs to be torn down and replaced. It is structually a mess and the entrances and exits are very weird. I didn't mean to get off subject---I look forward to seeing the new tower go up. It should be a nice addition to my view from my City West Condo.
July 9, 200816 yr The revolving clock is on a different garage at... Broadway and 3rd.. The QCS II tower is to be built at Sycamore and 3rd.
July 9, 200816 yr The revolving clock is on a different garage at... Broadway and 3rd.. The QCS II tower is to be built at Sycamore and 3rd. I read this forum almost daily, and seldom post. But that was a quick reply! Thank you. I was looking at the wrong building. I found it in the photos above, next door.
July 9, 200816 yr I hate that revolving clock. Part of me thinks that it's so lame that it's actually kind of cool, but at the end of the day I just wish it would vanish.
July 10, 200816 yr I hate that revolving clock. Part of me thinks that it's so lame that it's actually kind of cool, but at the end of the day I just wish it would vanish. Nooooooooo! I love that tacky thing. It's how I tell what time it is when I'm on the roof of my building!

I love that tacky thing. It's how I tell what time it is when I'm on the roof of my building! I like that clock too! The time is always right and it's convenient from different buildings. I don't see how anyone could not like it, typical locals who complain about everything I guess...
July 10, 200816 yr ^ Well... A) It's ugly. B) It revolves. C) It lights up and/or blinks. It looks like something that should be on a used car lot, not front and center on the most visible street of the city. As far as the time goes, doesn't everyone have a cell phone by now?
July 10, 200816 yr ^ Well... A) It's ugly. B) It revolves. C) It lights up and/or blinks. Which is why I like. You say it like those are bad things! :wtf: It looks like something that should be on a used car lot, not front and center on the most visible street of the city. As far as the time goes, doesn't everyone have a cell phone by now? Too much extra weight in my pockets. I like to travel light. :-)
July 10, 200816 yr Folks, we're getting way off topic here! A whole page dedicated to the great revolving clock! lol
July 10, 200816 yr ^ LOL. Good call. Let's all just agree to disagree then. I, myself am conflicted on it, and it's not going anywhere anyway.
July 10, 200816 yr Folks, we're getting way off topic here! A whole page dedicated to the great revolving clock! lol That's what Urban Ohioans do best!
July 11, 200816 yr OTR development, convention center expansion, a new fountain square, QCS, streetcars, the Banks, condos along the river and Easten Ave.,small population increase, possible new hotel downtown, stabilized crime statistics. WOW!! have I left anything out?
July 12, 200816 yr Razing of parking garage begins The Enquirer • July 12, 2008 The 1,500-space parking garage at Third and Sycamore streets Downtown is being torn down this morning to make way for what will be the city's tallest office tower. Third Street is closed and detours are posted in the area of the garage. The new Great American Insurance Building at Queen City Square, which is to be completed in 2011, will have its own 1,700-space garage. http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080712/NEWS01/307120046
July 12, 200816 yr I noticed today that there is a crane and the WS logo is already gone. Something tells me this all will happen quickly.
July 12, 200816 yr Is there significant progress yet? seems taking this building down will be no easy task.
July 12, 200816 yr ^ Taking 'em down is always quicker and easier than putting them up was. I'd be shocked if there was anything significant left a month from now.
July 15, 200816 yr I drove by on the way home from work and now that it is being demolished you can really see that this was a pretty massive garage. Great to see progress!
July 15, 200816 yr I got to see some of the demolition on Saturday. Those pictures really don't do the scene justice. I couldn't believe the amount of water pouring out of the top levels as they smashed into the building. It was continuously cascading like a waterfall. I guess it collected on the roof, but the sheer volume of it was astounding.

It looked cool, that's all I can say.
July 16, 200816 yr Watching them demo this garage, it is going to be very slow-going. I'm guessing August 1 before this thing is totally down. They have two cranes working it, but considering it takes them over an hour just to knock out a 20x20 section of each floor, and there are 8 or so floors, and they're only working at night, it's going to take awhile. I have some questions about this project that I suppose can't be answered without having access to Western & Southern's books and having free and instant construction and lease cost estimates. First of all, how close was this garage to the end of its useful life? Because I have to imagine that they could have simply kept the garage and built the tower on the cleared portion of the site. After all, the tower itself is only going to occupy a fraction of the site. There is plenty of space on that cleared section for another garage. The issue then is could this property have been the "best" office space in Cincinnati if the garage had remained? If so what was the cost/benefit of going to such extremes to clear this site and then basically rebuild a garage? Obviously any office space below the level of the garage would not have had a view of the river, but a new garage there would likely have meant there would have been little if any office space without a river view. And a new facade could have been built on the old garage and a garden and patio on the roof that would have made it attractive when viewed from the new tower.
July 16, 200816 yr From my understanding the garage was VERY close to the end of its life. It was going to need major work done (see Fountain Square garage) in order to stay operational. W&S probably saw it as a better solution to try to develop the piece and replace as many of the parking spaces in the 2 newly (1 overall when you subtract out the loss of this garage) created garages within QCS.
July 16, 200816 yr If this garage was near the end of its life....i wonder how many lives ole pinkie on fourth street has left because it sure seems like its used up a few. That thing should come down tomorrow. I wonder how in the world they are going to remove the bays closest to the existing/new tower. Just seems like disaster waiting to happen.
July 16, 200816 yr Yea I hear ya. But thats the beauty and mystery of construction. I have no idea how they manage to do some of that stuff. Speaking of 4th, that lot at 4th and plum needs to go. They could fit a monster of a skyscraper there.
