October 28, 200519 yr Okay, so I guess I can still count on the 5/3 tower over the Lazarus downtown, and the Millenium Monument. How about the Ewok Village?
October 28, 200519 yr Monte, what are those images of? Come on man, get with it! We need better descriptions!
October 28, 200519 yr The first one is of the proposed Fountain Square West in the late 1980's and early 1990's. It was going to be taller than the Carew. It, like the economy, fell a part during that time and is now Fountain Place which is the two story Macy's. There are still plans for a 5/3 tower above the store. But with 5/3 likely to be bought those plans have no life. The second picture is an urban garden that was once proposed for the same site. Sad.
October 28, 200519 yr So the Lazarus building has the proper foundation and piers already in place to build a skyscraper on? Did I get that right?
October 29, 200519 yr Oh, I think some sources will say 48 and some 49; I assume the discrepancy has to do with what is essentially the stairway exit at the top. There's room enough for a cashier in there, so I say it must be a real floor. :-)
October 29, 200519 yr Yep the cashier floor should be counted. I haven't been up in years, I ought to do it again.
October 29, 200519 yr nice images.......probably hard to find......to bad they didn't materialize Yes these old renderings have ways of disappearing from the net, that is why I archive them to the last pages of my pbase account. It comes in handy to have them all in one spot ;) Here are a few more from Fountain Square West:
October 30, 200519 yr ^Don't know if I like that, but at least it would fit in with the new art museum and convention center.
November 2, 200519 yr They are now installing light fixtures on two of the floors in phase I. They are noticeable from the street and Newport.
November 3, 200519 yr Ah yes, the Millennium Monument. It was to be a companion to the Newport-on-the-Levee development.
November 3, 200519 yr they have taken brick off of the old garage incrementaly on the western side...a little curious. its in bands about 10 feet or so wide nearest the southwestern corner
November 13, 200519 yr Its been 10 days since this was discussed, are all the bricks from the garage gone yet?
November 22, 200519 yr I am so glad they didn't build that tower larger than the Carew. No way. Eh? You mean phase 2? The completed portion was always going to be 12 stories.
November 30, 200519 yr I drove by last night and it looks like some of the office space is already occupied!
December 2, 200519 yr on my way home from work tonight i noticed two more floors are being finished for a total of 5 occiupied floors

January 24, 200619 yr Yeah, hopefully it wont be long to get people to lease the tower off. COME ON PHASE II, everybody want to see the tower go up.....
February 15, 200619 yr I recently did a google search on this for new information. Has anybody heard anything on phase II? This is starting to feel a little like M.M. All news/info just goes away.
February 16, 200619 yr Short and simple, this is how I personally feel about it: Given the history of how so many grand, lofty plans for towering skyscrapers in this town have bit the dust, I'm not holding my breath that QCS2 will be built to such a scale that would make it the tallest building in the city. The city is just plain and simply too conservative to think about anything that would knock precious Carew Tower down a peg.
February 16, 200619 yr ^ I dont think it has anything to do with the political landscape of the city (which, btw, isnt conservative). It has to do with demand for that type of office space and I just dont think its there right now. QSC Part 1 put the vacancy rate for Class A space I believe up to like 13....18%...I forget but its something like that.
February 16, 200619 yr Granted, there are issues with office vacancy rates. But it can't be the only reason why over the past 20 years there hasn't been any progress toward building the city's new tallest, when other cities have built their new tallest. While other developers secured financing for those buildings, Cincinnati somehow couldn't pull it off. I think as a whole TPTB lack vision for this city. I remember stories of how city council balked at ideas for various projects because they were afraid of how it would look or fit in with surrounding buildings. In itself, I can understand that. But they aren't willing to do anything on a grand scale that would really add a dramatic flare to the skyline. Case and point: Back when there were plans to do FSW, people complained because they didn't think it should be taller than Carew Tower. That's a pretty narrow, stuffy attitude in my opinion. Cincinnati IS a pretty conservative place. People don't generally like change around here. Maybe the political landscape is changing. But I'll believe it when I see something really dramatic happen to the skyline. Build a 1000' lookout tower or sunsphere by the river, and I'll accept that I'm wrong. ;-)
February 16, 200619 yr I think one of the reasons why the city doesn't have such tall buildings is because they dont want them to be higher than the surrounding hills. I think thats a good reason and I dont really care if the city has huge buildings. I am not going to define a citys attitude based on the height of their buildings. Plus a 1000 foot anything would look way out of place in Cincinnati. Plus, there isnt anything wrong with tradition in certain things. If people want to keep Carew the tallest then I dont care. What I do care about is the vitality of the city and its neighborhoods and dont get caught up on things like the height of buildings.
February 16, 200619 yr Oh, I don't know how tall our those ugly cell phone towers on those hills? I see them towering over the skyline coming in on 75N in KY. I'd much rather have building that tall. Also, it seems like the decisions makers in this city have a very narrow idea what they want built in the city and if a developer has project that doesn't fit their idea of a DT utopia it won't happen. I'm convince more more that there are people who would rather have nothing built if it doesn't fit their retro 1832 DT image of this city.
February 16, 200619 yr The designs for FSW were slightly ahead of their time; 5-10 towers resembling it have appeared in New York City in the last 10 years. But it would have destroyed the way that the Cincinnati skyline faces the river; ours is one of the only skylines in the world that faces in a particular direction. That tower would have faced east toward the square. If 3 or 4 towers taller than the Carew are built the skyline will take on a new character. But when just one is taller, it will almost certainly throw things off, possibly for decades before another 600 or 700 tower is built. Also, I have spent half of my adult life in the South; Cincinnati's downtown blows away everything in the South at street level and its skyline is better than all but Atlanta and Miami's. If you are coming from somewhere like Chicago or New York of course Cincinnati will seem tiny but it is positively impressive after spending a few months straight in Dixie.
