"There has been a lively discussion among skyscraper aficionados on the Internet about which building is really the tallest and highest. At 665 feet, the height of Queen City Square’s crown will easily surpass the Carew Tower, which is 91 feet shorter. Some wags have suggested that the Carew Tower’s flagpole ought to be included, contending it serves as much useful purpose as Queen City Square’s tiara. It’s not clear if that alone would allow it to retain its “tallest” status, however."

There is only one thread out there where people have been going back-and-forth about this! And it's this one :)

I think the tiara is beginning its construction.  There appear to be three tiara pieces on top of the parking structure as we look down on it from Atrium II.  (At least that's what I think they are.)

I went to the observation deck of the Carew tower 3 weeks ago and sighted a level line to QCS. The top of the railing of the obsevation deck was still higher than the highest part of QCS other than the crane at that time. The tiara of course will increase the height of QCS to well above the roof of the Carew Tower, but according to my calculation not above the flagpole. (This would be fun to verify when QCS is finished.) The top of the Carew tower will still be the highest point occupied by people.

It's kind of a shame that QCS will not have an obervation deck, at least that I know of. The Carew not only has an observation deck, but has an OPEN observation deck. The top of the Carew Tower is a special place. For the first time ever, it will not have a 360 degree view of the horizon - yet neither will QCS, since the highest floor is lower than the Carew Tower.

For the record, I am not the wag that suggested that that the Carew Tower will remain the tallest because of the flagpole. "Tallest" refers to vertical distance measured from the ground. "Highest" refers to vertical distance measured from some common datum.

Just to clarify things: the view of the north side of  QCS from the webcam has shown the outer skin up to about 8-9 floors from the top. As far as I can discern from the webcam, this has been the view for about a month....that is, no additional outer skin has been added to the top 8-9 floors on the north side for a month. Not to be argumentive, or beat a dead horse, but this appears to be a fact..:) I am sure the construction team is doing an execllent job!

The north side web cam has been down since the sixteenth of March and thats why there "appears" to be no progress on the curtain wall.

I am back downtown again today, and it looks like there are some supports on the top of QCS for the tiara installation.  Anybody else see these?  (Or maybe on the webcam?)

Come on guys. Then Christ Hospital would be the the tallest because of elevation. QCS sits at a lower elevation than the Carew.

No its that 30 story condo tower on the hill!  Or the radio antennas in Mt. Auburn!!

You missed my point. "Tall" refers to the distance from the ground to the top of the structure. "High" refers to elevation. "Tallest" is not the same as "Highest."

Any of the radio towers are much, much higher than the top of the Carew Tower or QCS.

Glad that's settled

Indeed quite elegant, especially from the narrow side. Will be interesting to see how the crown looks when they start assembling it. That's only a few weeks away.

From Today.

Jack, here are some shots of the curtainwall installation not seen on the webcams.  Enjoy folks!  The alluminum facade really looks nice in person, and I think it's going to be a beautiful building when finished.  The bottom facade looks neat too!

Great detail in the second to last pic!

Nice shots, looking forward to the tiara!

Thanks, DS, and the pics are awesome!!!

No problem Jack. My camera officially sucks ass now :whip:. It died taking those pictures . I now have to save up hundreds of dollars to buy a new one. BTW the bottom facade looks kind of glossy you can't tell in those picture, but it is a unique sort of stonish/marble material.

Tiara work may be starting. They were lifting steel beams to the top around lunch today.

Got a nice reality check yesterday about what huge geeks were are. Sister asks me "What's that big blue thing they're building downtown? Is that condos?"

Sister #2: "What big blue thing?"

Sister #1: "The big building next to the Reds stadium."

Sister #2: "Oh. I didn't notice."

Even after this thing is done, most people won't realize it's there.  After The Banks phase 1 is done, people won't remember it not having been there, and will still say they'll never get started on The Banks.

LOL^ So true Jmeck and when the Banks is completely finished, they'll go downtown and see it and go "when the hell did they build this?" hahahaha  happens all the time.

Was out at Eden Park yesterday, and saw a really cool view of the top of QCII over Mount Adams from Cliff Dr. Next time I go to Eden Park, I'll bring my camera and take a picture.

If you look real close you can see the tip of QCSII from that one hill in Dayton.

B.S. that tower is only 565 ft off the ground.  The curvature of the earth would prevent you from seeing that sort of thing anyway.  Not including the effect the atmosphere will have on the visibility of the person looking out. Plus Dayton is what 55-60 miles away?  I know you were just joking, but I wanted to point out the obvious.

Looked off our terrace yesterday....saw maybe three or so tiara pieces on top of the garage.  Obviously they need quite a lot more before that thing is taking shape.

Dayton, KY has hills, no?

Work gets lift at city's tallest building site

By Lisa Bernard-Kuhn • [email protected] • March 26, 2010

Another construction benchmark will take place this weekend as Great American Tower at Queen City Square builds its way up to become the region's tallest skyscraper.

On Saturday and Sunday work crews will make a final "crane jump" to the towering crane that hovers over the construction site at Third and Sycamore streets. The jump is accomplished by adding new sections to the machinery's base to raise the crane high enough to begin installation of the tower's highly touted 400-ton tiara.

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20100326/BIZ01/3270326/1055/NEWS/Tallest+building+gets+lift

Did this weekend's final "crane jump" that was publicized for QCS II get delayed? I don't notice any difference in height from the past week and/or last few days. Maybe it's rescheduled?  :?

Is the webcam frozen? I've heard there have been some issues with that.

Ever since the webcam came back online from the last time it was "frozen" it has been about 1hr and 30 mins behind real time. It is still working though. About the crane, yes it hasn't moved in months. It is possible that the person had their information wrong or the weather was just not good enough to do the jump. I didn't even see the crane crews come this weekend. So who knows. To be honest they have enough room to work with until they need to jump again.

I am not positive, but what appears to be three parts of Queen City Square's "tiara" are sitting atop the structure's parking garage.  Sorry no photos.  Can anyone confirm if these truly are parts of the crown.

There was indeed work being done to the crane on Saturday but they appear to have postponed the actual jump as it doesn't appear to be any higher.

What work did they do?  Usually when they work on the crane it involves a jump or some kind.

The little "work" that I saw was a couple workers on the outside of the tower towards the top.

Guys, there is more work being completed than what people observe on a casual walk-by. Yeah, the crane might not have been raised, but we had 15-20 MPH winds Sunday complete with rain and other work that had to be completed Saturday.

Love pic #2 with QCS and the Banks!

will be interesting to see how the actual view from devue (sp?) matches up with the renderings people on here made.  Anyone have those handy for a quick comparison on the progress?

The street presence on the riverfront, levee and Reds stadium will be massive.
