English has no better word than "modern" to colloquially describe something "an up-to-date style." I let that slide with people.  :-P

So we're back to this conversation, huh? Thought we were going to table this until the tiara was complete.  :-P

"It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

Well, the design of this was first proposed in the late-1980s, and shelved until 2002, so yeah.

Actually, this design has nothing to do with the 1980s versions.  The 80s versions had two different designs.  The first was a giant square structure in the middle of the block with one setback about halfway up with a flat top.  The other one which was extremely cool, was twin 40 story towers with spired tops.  One tower sat where 303 Broadway is today and the other sat where the rotunda is today.  I wish I still had a copy of the rendering!

People are complaining before a building has been built.  It'll look great in our skyline and people will still say it sucks because they'll stick to their guns and not wanna be proven wrong lol.

Anyone know where this pic was taken from?

I've taken a couple from this angle that I can share.

^Dayton, Ky?

I'm just glad Cincinnati is even getting another building over 500'+.  As for the design I agree with Scrabble this building is so "Cincinnati" style.  You won't see anything like this building in any other city.  I think that's what Obata was going for.  :yap:

Its in Ohio.

It's Eden Park.

Yep! I think this angle is so cool. You could never before see any of downtown's building prior to this. I took these a few weeks ago before the leaves start to start growing on the trees. I just like the way the building looks popping up over Mt. Adams. Here's a couple more.

So what prize do I get?

The prize is knowing that you are smart! lol

BTW - I saw your name on the sign-in sheet for the Plan Cincinnati Working Group orientation. Which working groups did you sign up for?

Pffft, I already knew that.

I signed up on the website a while ago, but I haven't participated in anything so far.

Oh... There is another orientation session on Saturday. I went on Wednesday and was nearly put to sleep by Charles Graves.

I  had a rendering of the two-tower design until about 3 years ago when I cleaned up my files! (Jack)

I don't see any tiara construction from the view of the webcam looking S.E.

I saw a peice of the Tiara in place on the South West corner of the building this morning.  Will be checking it out again on the way home today.

This building feels very Cincinnati to me.  Somewhat retro but cool at the same time.

I've always thought this as well... Has points that resemble art-deco but is modern by 2010 standards too.

I dont care what anyone says, this building is NOT modern.  1980's mod.  yes.  2010.  no.  what it is is an eyesore of catastrophic proportions.

Ok, so maybe a bit extreme.  but it is ugly.

Sigh. Modern or not, it isn't ugly when it sits next to the concrete boxes that currently surround it. Why do we have to label everything modern or not? It's bulky yes, but it's glass structure and the tiara will amazingly freshen up the skyline. The building isn't even completed yet and we are already talking down to it. Would we rather have the skyline remain dull or have a somewhat 'fresh' appearance? I'm happy with it. Of course it could have been better, but it could have also been much much MUCH worse.

Does it have to be called a tiara?  I know that's the "inspiration" for it, dumb as that may be, but tiara just sounds so...dumb as well.

Haha. Agreed. I apologize for at least that.

What would you suggest? Toenail?

It is called the "tiara"...it was insipired by Princess Diana's Tiara, that doesn't mean that's not what it is called?  :wtf:

...or a "crown."  Which is more...architectural.

We could call it he "super cool round-shaped thing going on top"

At least crown makes more sense, this is QUEEN City Square after all.

I didn't see the first piece of the crown you guys are talking about being installed? What side?

its on the south side... sitting quite precariously i must say

Cincy need a needle with the Montgomery inn on top. Maybe 900 feet. Something to give QCS2 a run for it's money. ;)

Whatever happened to the planned  1000 foot "needle" that was to be built next to the Freedom Bell in Newport?

I was riding over the Purple People Bridge a little before sunset and noticed a sort of arched truss up near the top of QCS, was that it?

I stand corrected.

Have you looked at the renderings of the past at http://cincyimages.com?

Please don't bring that up.  I don't want even a whisper of that project coming back on-line!

You know what they say about people with skyscraper obsessions....

Sweet Pictures man!

Is the Crown going to be white!??! Blah. I thought it was just going to be stainless steel.

"It is called the tiara"

One of my coworkers called it the "fedora."

The cost of doing that whole thing in stainless steel would be astronomical.

With the tiara's facade, I doubt you'll be able to dramatically notice the white.

Work begins on tiara to crown new tower

By Lisa Bernard-Kuhn, Cincinnati Enquirer, April 23, 2010

The crowning tiara that will top off Great American Tower at Queen City Square at Third and Sycamore streets is beginning to take shape.

This week, work crews began installing the first of 44 segments that will create the tiara - designed by HOK Architects and modeled after the crowns worn by Princess Diana.

"Designed by HOK Architects and modeled after the crowns worn by Princess Diana."

Oh dear, is this really true?

We've been calling that thing a tiara for years now, but was it really modeled after the crowns worn by Princess Diana? How embarassing.  :-o

To confirm, that's what HOK told me as well when I inquired about it... I don't know what to make of it.

I've always thought it was just a story they kind of made up. The only one she wore that remotely resembles QCS is this one:

PBS below.

Tiara color does look white.

I think the tiara design is a unique idea in an age where most skyscrapers resemble each other thoughout the world!  It will set it apart from others.  And again, what better city to try this in ?!?!?  This will be Cincy's middle finger conveniently oriented in the direction of Charlotte NC. Queen city, they will never be!! Cinderella city, maybe!

DDM66, those are fantastic pics! Please keep em coming!
