I was thinking about that after I ran the marathon.  When the pig passed by the site last year it was only 3 stories or so out of the ground and the Banks weren't at street level.  Things have changed.  In a few more years, we'll have rail tracks to cross [this won't affect the race, the pig already crosses railroads elsewhere on the route without problem]

Here's an update from Sunday. She does tower over GABP.

This one shows the floors labeled. Based on where the 40th floor is, the official height is 548.875 ;-).

^Remember, they choose not to include a 13th floor...  :wtf:

"It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

^You know the funny thing is the superstition surrounding the 13th floor is kinda whack.  Think about it...you build a skyscraper and eventually you will approach the "13th level" of the building anyway.  By naming it the 14th or something does nothing.  So if ghosts want to still inhabit the 13th floor, they just have to float up 13 levels anyway.

^That is beautiful

That crown is going to be huge.  Based on the rendering there will be seven connecting arches, they have three and four going across now.

But there are 41 floors. Even after the label there's one more floor? Plus the tiara adds 130'

Update from this past Saturday. On Vine heading toward the Square.

Great shot!

It kinda looks like a big fish jumping out of the skyline to eat the bait dangling from the crane.  It's weirding me out.  That tiara is going to be HUGE when it's finished though.  I'm getting excited.

^LMAO!!!

^^ Great show

Prok I want to be you for a few minutes. Just long enough to see what strange and magical world you live in.

prok has a point.  But it's funny.  I already love this building but when finished, it will look identical to the great white shark on the cover of the Jaws novel LOL.

ANother great shot is coming down 71 at around the Baldwin Center. The skyline pans as it comes into view around the WKRC hill(mt auburn)?

You know, I went downtown on Friday and I thought this thing was going to appear tall as well. The goodnews is it makes an impact on the skyline that's for sure. But it feels more like the second tallest. I think looks matter most when it comes to visualizing height. I know the tiara is only half way up, but I don't think it will appear taller than CT even with the full tiara height, thus it won't feel like the next tallest building. My gf didn't even notice it when I pointed it out to her (granted, she like most people, don't care about big buildings). We talked about elavation being the key; but I think the lower elavation is hurting QCS's image as being the tallest IMO. It probably needed to be 765' to truly feel like the tallest building in Cincinnati.

^Just take her up 75 N at the cut in the hill from KY.  Her views will totally change.

Another good view can be had in Fort Thomas, where Highland Avenue passes over I-471.

I realize you're very passionate about QCS being the outright tallest building in the Cincinnati skyline, but I don't see why this matters to anyone. Same goes with the people who can't handle the Carew Tower not being the tallest building in Cincy anymore. I think QCS very positively affects the skyline where and how it is. If anything, I think it's for the better that QCS doesn't stick out too much, given that it sits more on the outside of the skyline.

You guys do realize that the average chump in this area has no idea that this building is under construction, and after it's finished, won't realize that it wasn't there before. Same thing with The Banks.  The public understands base concepts like "stadium", "casino", and "scary-looking black people", and everything in between is just a gray confusion that separates understandable self-contained vessels.

If the builders of Queen City Square sought to build the tallest building in the city, they should have made it undeniably the tallest building.  Building the tower facing Fourth St. would have helped that cause to the tune of 30-40 vertical feet.  From the entire west side of the city, especially from Union Terminal, The Carew Tower still looks not just taller, but much taller.  Taller than even QCS's construction tower.

While it might be statistically the tallest building, statistics don't matter because the public can't understand the relationship between numbers.  They see that one building looks taller than another and that's it.

I'm kind of glad it doesn't look taller. In a list, our tallest is new. In person, the skyline retains some tiny semblance of symmetry. Win-Win from my perspective. But I'm more of an urbanist than a tower-buff. If that makes sense.

Couldn't have said it better. Infact that's where we were looking at it from: Union Terminal.

Carew tower plays at about 185 meters as opposed to the 175 it's listed as.  Having two towers that play at 200 meters is not the worst thing in the world.

How do you figure...the flag pole?  Ugh...doesn't count. ;)  Unless, of course, you want to include the flagpole on top of Atrium II as part of that tower's height.  BUT....we've already been down this road before.  Some include flagpoles, some don't.

WTF! THE FLAGPOLE TOTALLY COUNTS!!!!!11

Haha, just playing. Anyhow, anyone know why they've stalled on the tiara? They put the first half up so quickly, but for several days...nada.

They're waiting on the pieces from the manufacturer. It's not like they're not putting it up because they're lazy, there's just nothing to put up!

From my estimation, Carew appears to be ten or so meters taller than it is listed, and no I don't mean flagpole.  There is certainly logic behind constructing a tower where they did.

Gotcha. I was thinking maybe they were waiting to finish the glass first. You know, so the final piece of the tiara would be the "crowning touch".

Looks like it probably will be, anyway, since the glass is almost done!

Because they already owned the land and had a store there?  (Mabley and Carew).

Because they did their homework.

I wonder what this forum would look like back in 1930s when CT was being constructed. I can imagine what the conversation would be about. "Oh man that thing sure looks skinny!" Who knew that 81 years later the building's status as Cincy's tallest would be replaced by a fatter building. I know there wasn't internet back then, but I think it would be funny to read posts back from 1930.

80 years from now, people won't have to wonder what we were saying. (Provided no major loss of Internet data or the tech to read it.)

They'll be laughing at us.

Forget the future, I'm sure people are laughing at us now!

Here's what they were thinking in 1930:

Little did they know that we wouldn't get a building taller than the Carew Tower for 80 years, and then we would be discussing ground elevations, flagpoles, and view angles to prove which building is actually higher.

The tallest in that mural is TWICE as tall as Carew!

Obviously, they weren't thinking about sprawl and white flight.

I remain optimistic and predict a building boom within the next 15 years similar to the one we had in the '80's.  QCS already looks great but I dont think it'll hold the crown as the tallest for long.

Hemroid, is that you with the green glove in that mural?

Na I'm the guy on the right sayng "what the hell are you doing?" lol

It doesn't seem like a building boom would be eminent. Great American and other members in the AFG company are currently scattered around various downtown offices. It made a ton of sense to move all of their business and executive offices into one building (though the IT department is staying in Dixie Terminal). Great American moving out of the 580 Building will add to the good amount of vacant office space that currently exists downtown.

I really don't have a lot of knowledge about the rest of the companies with downtown offices, but outside of special cases like QCS I wouldn't think the demand would exist for another skyscraper.

^^ Nice overalls.

My guess is the fraction will continue to move torwards centralization as opposed to the de centralized affiliate model. As a result, they will moe people downtoan and IMO, the 580 building makes perfect sense.  I work at Fountain Square and have seen a trend of more and more people coming downtown.  The tower is full, though, and 580 would be a logical alternati

Word is that construction on the tiara will continue next week.
