Word is that construction on the tiara will continue next week.

Yeah I was going to post something about that. I see they've got a new shipment of tiara pieces as well. It's about damn time.

Here's an update from this past Sunday. Looks like some official signage is now up long with most of the facade.

edit: meant to upload this one. more or less the same

I was coming down Sycamore today and noticed that this building has a great light catcher in the design.  Having that round shape wall really helps catch the evening sun.  Excellent.

BTW they've started constructing more of the tiara today;)

I want our gaping hole to go away badly.  Hopefully Cincinnati won't have to wait more than twelve years to see ground broken on something really tall there.

I have some pictures from today (Over 200, need to sort through them). Will post them later. I went all over downtown, well not all over but you'll see.

Sweet, looking forward to it.

It has been a while since I checked this thread.  Amusing discussion and great photos.

I'm starting to think QCT looks like a Transformer or Voltron or something. Like it's ready to sprout arms and legs and either wreak havoc on the city or defend it from invaders.

What the?? :wtf:

Dude I laughed out loud at that one. Weird that you would see that in QCS?

It's the angles, man, it looks robotic.

Nah, too round/bubbly.

More like the Power Rangers' Megazord!

But it has no crown!

Someone needs to photoshop the robot head on the knockoff Voltron.  WTF is a Megazord anyway?

Coming in from the airport yesterday, you can see the crown from where I-275E merges onto I-71/75N

From Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. LOL!

So does anyone else agree? I've heard people call Scripps the Darth Vader building. Why can't GAT be the Voltron (or Transformer/Autobot/Decepticon) building? I think Voltron or Decepticon sounds the best.

^ The resemblance is kind of creepy.

The more complete the tower gets, the more I like it. I think it has a really cool Art Deco/Gothan City look going on.

Yep, I think the same thing... it's the lines.

Stupid question  - again.  More to the point, this will sound a bit weird.  When viewing the construction progress on the queencitysquare.com webcam, can anyone look at the crane and extrapolate what spot on the crane would be the same level as the apex of the final arch in the tiara?  I mean, first section down from the top...second...middle of the third...?  Don't ask why I'm asking - it's just a stupid thing I'm trying to picture in my mind.  Thanks.

Not weird at all. I was wondering the same exact thought. If we know where on the existing crane (at what "marker" per say) it would provide a great indication of the final height. Anyone care to answer? Much appreciated.

If you look at the rendering, the second band of the tiara seems to be about half the height of the tiara. So if you imagine that to be doubled, you'll get the full height. That's how I've been picturing it, anyhow.

the north side now has 3 rings of the tiara in place, south side has 2.  5 of 13 rings are completed.

Someone was kind enough to model QCS in Google Earth.  Here is the model: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=f9a7861be9545565b2f52a2bcb0397fa&prevstart=0

Why wait for the building to finish when you can enjoy the completed thing right now?!  Download and view to your hearts content!!

God bless your heart!  I'd seen that before and was looking for it just the other day, and I couldn't find it anywhere.  Thanks so much for posting that.

JVarney, glad to know I'm not the only one wondering about that.  I don't feel so weird now.

Natininja, thanks for the idea.  It gives me something to work with.  I appreciate it.

Here is a teaser from today. They were aligning a piece of the tiara so they could thread a bolt through and connect the piece.

that is an amazing picture!! Thanks!

That's an awesome picture Sherman. Too bad the Enquirer doesn't just contract you to do photog for their development stories.

The webcam hasn't been updated since last night!

Tiara...

Great pics, Sherman.

Man would our city take on a different character...

Civvik, that would be AWESOME!  I'd love it.  But then we'd need to get an 800-footer somewhere north of 6th Street to really make the skyline punch.

Of course, someone would come along and find a way to still say Carew Tower was taller, or looked taller.  LOL!   (Don't anyone go bashing me now.  I'm just being a smart-alec.)

A 750 foot 500 unit condo tower would be nice. Miami does it all the time .;)

Hillarity!  Fountain square west would have been a big lift for downtown.

What the hay...we're a waterfront city, too.  So I say "go for it".  LOL!

Okay, not exactly the same kind of waterfront, but still....  :-P

I think a hospital(private) and new school would make things roll downtown. These are things that will be needed once gas get's too $5 $6+ a gallon. I want QCSII to feel dwarfed.lol

That building looks out of place right there.

Well, you've got to be careful what you ask for. There are a handful of spots downtown where a tower would be probable: Third and Vine, Fifth and Race, Fountain Square West (Fifth and Vine). If you get height-happy and call for a 700+ or 800+ now that we have a 600+, the rest of Cincinnati's buildings start looking odd. Because they aren't very big.

Here's the same model brought down 50 feet (to 700 even) and flipped. Better, but still making all but QCS look like midgets.

cincifantasy4.jpg

Just for shits and giggles, let's take the tallest in another medium-large skyline, Seattle's 945 footer, and put it at Fountain Square West:

cincifantasy6.jpg

Cincinnati now looks ridiculous, even when you put the building in the center of downtown.

    Nice work.

Architect Christopher Alexander suggests that no building should be more than one story higher than adjacent buildings. He also suggests a four story limit, so he is obviously not a fan of skyscrapers.

Imagine what Over-the-Rhine would look like if the floor area of QCS were replaced with an equal floor area of 4 story buildings on parking lots in Over-the-Rhine!

Plus, imagine how many storefronts would be possible! QCS has a one-block perimeter at sidewalk level. An equavalent number of 4-story buildings would have many times that.

Just for fun, could you add the Empire State, World Trade Center, John Hancock, or Sears Tower to Cincinnati?

Sears Tower at Fountain Square West:

OK, that's all the requests I'm taking for now. Time to work on a model for The Banks.

That really illustrates how scale can be so relative.  Approaching Cincinnati from I-75 northbound in Kentucky is just as impressive as seeing the Chicago skyline from Lake Michigan or South Lake Shore Drive, even though it's not nearly as large.

  Whoa, that looks so strange.

  Thanks for posting.

Civvik, those are awesome, could you do a few more?  I would like to see one with FSW at about 750 ft., another decent sized one where you had your original one, the old 312 Plum proposal (it was just east of 312 Elm and about as tall as Scripps, with the same shape as 312 Elm, but mirror imaged), and anything you want to put at Plum between 4th and 5th.

That would be killer if you have the time!

When you did that 700 footer it looked better. Plus I think an 800 footer behind QCS would look nice as well as another 700-900 footer over in Fountsquare West...what a skyline that would be...can you do one of those Civvik?
