July 19, 201014 yr ^^ There will be no glass. It appears they are still working on internal supports. They will also need to install the Great American signage. That's what I thought. I thought we settled that a few pages ago.
July 19, 201014 yr When I said total enclosure of the tiara, I meant that it will be 100% complete and the crane can't drop things in and out of it. There is just some screening towards the bottom of the tiara to hide the mechanical stuff and provide a background for the signage. Not sure what the material is.
July 19, 201014 yr The material that will be used is a LEED certified combination of recycled flagpole and webcam jokes.
July 20, 201014 yr So, must her majesty remove the tiara in order to remove/replace mechanical systems in the future?
July 20, 201014 yr A couple shots from Newport and GABP on 7/19/10. I shot these before the Reds game against the Nats. If I had taken these before dinner, the sky would have been much prettier. The Reds beat the Nats 7-2 (with a homer landing in my section)! This picture is only good for purposes of understanding QCS's effect on the skyline. Makes a statement at least. We took the Southbank Shuttle from Newport to GABP. A streetcar would've been nicer but not as nice as seeing US Bank Arena demolished. The street-level interaction is horrendous (especially next to GABP where thousands of visitors walk/drive on "Pete Rose Way". Horrendous streetscape around the corner to your left. My first view of QCS on I-75 south came somewhere near 275. Only the boxy top of Carew was also visible.
July 20, 201014 yr That picture from across the river really makes it look like it should be at least a third as tall as it actually is.
July 20, 201014 yr so. bad. Cincinnati as a city cannot let this kind of crap happen again. Looking back, I wish we would have protested the design and demanded something better. the city deserves so much better. thanks for the photos though.

Looking back, I wish we would have protested the design and demanded something better. the city deserves so much better. thanks for the photos though. I totally agree though I'm mindful of the fact that it could have been MUCH worse. Not a good way to judge things but I've fallen in that habit.
July 21, 201014 yr Has the garage crane been dismantled yet? I couldn't really tell from the webcam but it looks gone.
July 21, 201014 yr Thanks for the photos. Beautiful building. It really improves the skyline. Now on to the 800 footer.

July 21, 201014 yr great pictures! a beautiful addition to the skyline. the diversity in the skyscrapers in Cincinnati is amazing! Thanks for the shots.
July 21, 201014 yr I have tried so hard to fall in love with his design and I simply can't do it. There are only a couple angles which it looks good from. Covy Cutinthehill: To wide. Dwarfs other buildings in girth. Bellevue/West DT: Looks like the amnesty international logo without the barbed wire. 71 Cut: Best view. Trim the width by 25% and trade the tiara for another 10 floors with a couple of setbacks and a top similar to Chemed and it's a winner.
July 21, 201014 yr I think it is kind of ugly at the moment, but I also think when the cranes come down, the signage goes up, and the elevator on the front goes away, its going to significantly improve the aesthetics.
July 21, 201014 yr The building is best viewed from the west, when its completely behind the Carew tower! But joking aside. The building is built and for better or worse we have to get used to it. Are there design things that should have changed? Yes. But this building shows the limitations of a Design Review Board. I am just happy they got them to drop the skywalk and add retail to the 4th street side. They could have done way more on lower stories to promote proper design scale but it was never addressed. The tiara is a cheap way to claim "tallest tower" in Cincinnati. I think everyone would have wanted more floors if it was possible but the market just isn't there for it. But we have what we got and you can like it or not. Many New Yorkers hated the WTC looked for years because they were tall ugly gray boxes on a super-block but they ultimately became identifiable with NYC culture (before 9-11). Can QCS grow more beautiful with age? I think only time will tell. “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” -Friedrich Nietzsche
July 21, 201014 yr The skywalk is still proposed, and the building is designed to accommodate a skywalk if ever needed.
July 21, 201014 yr Has the garage crane been dismantled yet? I couldn't really tell from the webcam but it looks gone. No "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

Can QCS grow more beautiful with age? I think only time will tell. You have a point. Building designs grow on people over time. A lot of people were absolutely disgusted with the Ascent design claiming it looks like a giant zebra in our skyline. But now they appreciate it's diversity. QCS will definitely grow on people. A lot of buildings have tons of different features to make them the tallest in any city. Spires look cool but that's also a "cheap" way to claim it. Same thing with plopping our flag on top of a building.

Can QCS grow more beautiful with age? I think only time will tell. true. but with the other examples you give its a matter of taste. over time tastes change. this is just a bad design imo. no matter the time period, it will always be a bad, poorly proportioned design. unless of course humans change their idea of proper proportion. i guess if we keep getting shorter and fatter then this is possible.
July 22, 201014 yr For what it's worth, I think this one's shaping up to be a real beauty, as long as the sign isn't too obnoxious and the stuff on top get's hidden. Some viewing angles are better than others which makes it kind of cool as well. IMHO
July 22, 201014 yr I wish it was taller, but the 'tiara' and the lines created where the upper portions begin to square off are starting to grow on me. I think the best angle is sort of 45 degrees to it (like when you have come down from the cut in the hill and are soon to cross the Brent Spence).
July 22, 201014 yr Just saw this thing from the cut-in-the-hill for the first time yesterday. I must say, it looks gargantuan. When you first see it up there, it really looks like the tallest building in the city and dwarfs everything else by quite a bit. Not in a bad way, either, imo.
July 22, 201014 yr I thought QWS looked great on ESPN last night...good view from inside the ballpark
July 23, 201014 yr Can't wait to see it in person would love to know how it stacks up to some of the talls and supertalls built in China over the past few years.
July 23, 201014 yr Garage Crane dismantling has begun. Should be complete by Sunday. "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
July 23, 201014 yr Can't wait to see it in person would love to know how it stacks up to some of the talls and supertalls built in China over the past few years. It's way, way shorter.

July 23, 201014 yr ^ Nice. I love how it's just as wide as the SWFC, but 1/3 the height. It's quite the chode of a tower. (Am I allowed to say that here?)

July 23, 201014 yr Height will come for Cincy over time. I'd rather have a building that has some bulk and that looks powerful rather than a skinny needle. Besides, QCS look magnificent in the evening sunlight.
July 24, 201014 yr I like this a lot more than the SWFC. I currently live in Guangzhou but used to live in Shanghai and would pass that tower everyday - ridiculously tall and auspiciously similar to a bottle opener.
July 24, 201014 yr From this angle, QCS looks especially good: Lol, that's because it's hidden behind a ballpark. ;)
July 24, 201014 yr Parking garage crane is down now. (Annoyingly couldn't drive down Sycamore there to get into Atrium II this morning.)
July 25, 201014 yr ^Presumably. It's still up--they were using it to take down the shorter crane that was coming up through the parking structure.
July 25, 201014 yr The main crane will be the last to go. It's there for at least another month or two.
July 25, 201014 yr From this angle, QCS looks especially good: Lol, that's because it's hidden behind a ballpark. ;) Haha, there's something to that actually. It's not as bad as out-of-towners want people to believe though.
July 27, 201014 yr Great pic, I agree ... lighting is great. I've also thought about taking a pic of this from this area ... it seems almost out of place with the high-end organizations, clubs, residential ... which makes it cool from this angle.
July 27, 201014 yr its great how the bend on E 4th gives you a wonderful terminating vista into the tower. classic urban design, really improves the value of Lytle Park. p.s. you can also see the crown poking through the trees from Washington Park
July 27, 201014 yr This picture makes me laugh! :-D you guys understand the metaphor and symbolism, right? Diana was to be the Queen of England......We are the Queen City. thats the connection
July 27, 201014 yr This picture makes me laugh! :-D you guys understand the metaphor and symbolism, right? Diana was to be the Queen of England......We are the Queen City. thats the connection But she never was Queen, only a princess. If we really want to delve into the metaphor, the City of Cincinnati is going to come to a horrific end before it ever truly becomes a Queen City.
July 27, 201014 yr At least they didn't try to play up the Porkopolis thing. Imagine what horrendous retarded thing they might have come up with for that!
