ahh yes, there it is. I do remember something about QCS being inspired by Chrysler (which is my number 1 building).

I wonder if they will change the color of the tiara lighting at night like they do with PNC during the holidays?

I was trying to find stuff on the tiara, did a google search on "cincinnati tiara" and came up with this horrifying pic!

LMAO! How he heck do these come up in searches is beyobd me!

^ LOL!  No one knows for sure where cat ends and blanket begins!

The cat does kinda have the QCS look going, LOL

Does anyone know when the Urban Design Review board is stated to review the QCSII design?

i dont disagree that buildings with similar ornamentation are successful.  i just think that its too much.  the difference for me between queen city square and the atlanta tower is proportion.  to me the atlanta project is much more about terminating the mass of the building itself, i think it relates better to the rest of the building, where queen city square is less success at completing the mass of the building.  hopefully i like it better in person!

Is this because of the tiara or the building?  I think you have answered by saying "proportion" but...

Is ground breaking in March?  I know they said the spring.

Some articles said spring, other said summer.  My money is on late summer.

LOL! Sorry, after 15 years of waiting, I'm a little jumpy on an exact start date!

I would put my money on late spring-mid summer.

this is my favorite Atlanta scraper... I always thought this building would look wonderful in the Nati... at night it has the same glow as the carew...the crown is very fitting...

Does ANYONE know when the Urban Design Review Board will meet in regard to QCSII?

I heard they didn't approve the design...

Build this thing here and you're just asking for Gozer to come and trash the City.

^--- and Grasscat is the Key-Master!

I've found a more recent Height Overlay Map for Downtown.  It also states that:

Height limits do not apply to farm buildings and structures, spires, belfries, cupolas, domes, false mansards, monuments, water towers, fire and hose towers, transmission towers, windmills, chimneys, smoke stacks, flag poles, radio and television towers, masts, aerials, parabolic satellite receivers, microwave transmitters and receivers used in connection with radio and television broadcasting, unless subject to specific regulations by other provisions of the Cincinnati Zoning Code.

soo..... what is 1050 ASL mean...?

ah... duh...

So what does that translate to for height from street level?

I think 4th street is about 560ft ASL. The riverfront is more like high 400s.

"No limit"

Sounds good to me! ;-)

It does sound good, doesn't it Ronnie?  Except when you look at how that entire section is already developed, so there will never be a building of significant height built there.  How convenient that the opportunity existed for so long, and look what we ended up with.

Not to mention....that height limit of 1050 ASL comes out to be under 500' above street level where QCS2 is slated to go up.  Wonder how they got away with THAT one.

Well there are the air rights above Macy's that could always be used...plus I think that the small 5/3 building (on FS) could always be razed as it is not significant at all.

are we sure asl doesn't stand for above street level?

As has been mentioned before, there is no "set" regulation as to how tall buildings can be in certain areas of the CBD. These numbers are more of a "preferred" height that Cincinnati would have liked to stick with. but these were also based at a time when Cincinnati was doing pretty good back in the 80's. I really don't think Cincy gives a s*** right now when they are trying to bring businesses back to the urban core. Right now it's more "what businesses want, they will get".

That certainly would be simpler.

isn't the base elevation around 500ft above sea level.

And it's definitely sea level, not street.

I don't see how that could be possible. If you look at the numbers, considering the CBD street level probably averages around 560 ft above sea level, then none of the building heights downtown would ever break 500ft except in the no limit zone.

Heck, those numbers would not even allow anything around the river including the stadiums to even reach 100ft. These numbers would have to be street level. It would not make any sense to base building height by sea level.

You might be right Ronnie, but it doesn't really matter.  There are no height limits for buildings.

I'm looking forward to the skyline being rewritten over the next 20 years.  I would love to see a few more towers that create an interesting composition for our downtown.

Exactly! ;-)

Depending on if QCSII is a hit or not, I could see a slew of new concepts breaking out in Cinci over the next 20 years.

^I agree!

That would be cool if after QSII is built a few new skyscrapers get built.

Update: They were doing test borings at the site today, right next to the parking garage.

^That's kind of odd considering they did them for the parking garage already.  Did you see what company was doing them?

I saw it, then forgot the name of the company.  D'oh!

And it's definitely sea level, not street.

Which is rising with global warming!

groan...

i heard some comparisons to the chrysler building.  i see it as more penobscot with a crown...

Naw. I've diagram'd both and they are not similar in anyway except maybe the setbacks which exist on about 50% of today's buildings. The comparison to Chrysler is not in the looks department, just in the architectural style between the two. QCS looks good, but does not even come close to Chrysler, which IMO is the best looking building in the world.

I agree...QCS is no Chrysler that's for sure.  I love the Chrysler Building, but I don't think it's the best looking in the world...it has a pretty hideous base (if you ask me).  If it weren't for that I think it very well could be the best.

QCS will be a good addition to the Cincy skyline, however, I can't help but think how much better it would look if it were slightly thinner and maybe a little taller to make up for the square-footage.

the architectural styles of great american and chrysler may have a few similarities, but they do not look alike at all.  you can envision a flatter face and less tapering particularly on the sides of penobscot and there's your similarity.  chrysler is nice, but give me empire state any day.

My thoughts exactly.  Even just thinner with less sf would be perceived as taller.
