I don't even live downtown and I get all of my meat and cheese products at Avril-Bleh.  It's hands down the best butcher shop in the region.

Building a Compromise

Mayor, city council and developer seem to strike a deal on disputed downtown property

BY KEVIN OSBORNE | CITY BEAT

May 21, 2008

DOWNTOWN - Cincinnati officials have reached a tentative compromise about what to do with a long-vacant downtown building after butting heads earlier this spring with a developer and disagreeing about how much the prime piece of real estate is worth.

At the urging of Mayor Mark Mallory, negotiations were held during the past few weeks that involved differing factions on Cincinnati City Council, some City Hall staffers and a development company that wants to buy the city-owned building at the corner of Fourth and Race streets (see "Doing Due Process," issue of April 2).

Earlier this spring some council members proposed selling the property at 33 W. Fourth St. for what critics alleged was a sharply discounted price that would have given the buyer potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit that otherwise would go to the city.

Why do so many people here think Palomino, McCormick and Rock Bottom ARENT chains? LOL

I'm pretty sure Fridays is cheaper than Rock Bottom.

Cheaper and not as good.

I love Rock Bottom! Just sayin...

Look again, I never said they aren't chains.  I know they're all chains, which I'm not wild about.  But there also aren't 11 Palominos between here and West Chester...

I was refering to j3's post but it's really not a big deal. I agree the rarity of them makes them less of a chain but I'm sure they're modeled similarly.

I think the site should be split.  Have a Joseph Beth and grocery store on the bottom neighbored by a movie rental store.  Above that, residential highrise(s)  Whoever lives there or close to it would never have to venture more than two blocks ever lol.

Parking would be an issue....no one will pay to go to the grocery store.  They would have to validate tickets or come up with some sort of plan.  I am all for it though.  But I also wouldn't mind a movie theatre somewhere downtown.

I think you may be confusing this site for the parking lot site at 5th & Race.  This location has a building there already...it is attached to the McAlpin Building on 4th.

I've never been to another Palomino, but I've been to the Rock Bottom in Portland and several McCormick & Schmick's, also in Portland.  The Rock Bottom is very different there.  They have an upstairs that has really nice pool tables that you rent by the hour, which I'd kill for the Cincy location to follow suit with.  I think there are darts as well, but I couldn't swear to that.  All of the beers are the same, but with Portland-esque names.  The McCormick & Schmick's are all pretty different.  You can tell that you're in a nice restaurant, but unless you saw a menu, you wouldn't instantly know that you're in a Mc&S.  The Cincinnati location is my favorite, but I think it's just because of the stained glass Reds and Bengals logos, etc.

Rando your right.  I should just stop typing after 3am;)

I don't think Friday's is cheaper than Rock Bottom.  I always feel ripped-off when I go to a Friday's, which is never by my choice.

the way rock bottom's beer work is that they are told to do styles x y and z and then they get to pick their own style to do as well.  But each brewmaster has his own recipie for each style, so they all might have a pale ale, but they are different

^ Interesting.  It seemed like the same beer to me, but my palate leaves something to be desired.
