Posted September 9, 200717 yr This, like I have said before, is my favorite part of Atlanta...likewise you are seeing more pics and probably the most enjoyable (knowing the interests of many of you). So enjoy the ever improving Midtown Atlanta...much of this is the other urban scene that is often overlooked. Not bad at all. I'm not sure if this is southern Midtown or northern Downtown...anyways I started near the Fox Theatre and worked northernly, eventually making my way all the way back to 3rd and Piedmont. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. 21. 22. Just in case you were getting used to that pleasing architecture and natural elements...BAM! Too much of this glass/concrete look in ATL 23. 24. 25. 26. 27. September 9, 200717 yr the wierdest thing about that area is that if you walk two blocks off of peachtree, the density drops from skyscrapers to suburban single family homes with no transition at all. Piedmont park is the bomb, central riverfront park could learn a thing or two from piedmont. They have this little microbrewery in the park with really tasty beer, it is pricey, but so is everything in atlana/ cincinnati is really cheap.

September 9, 200717 yr the wierdest thing about that area is that if you walk two blocks off of peachtree, the density drops from skyscrapers to suburban single family homes with no transition at all. Yes...those single family homes in my pics are on Piedmont (exactly 2 blocks off of Peachtree). While there is very little transition, it does make the area quite an inviting and livable space for not just your typical empty-nesters, YPs, etc...but it is also quite nice for families.
September 9, 200717 yr #2: A new building? Looks very nice! Overall, a great mix of building styles and density. I don't mind the taller towers as long as it doesn't completely overpower the neighborhood because these projects draw people back into town, and you know they like the view :) Looks like cooler temps will be prevailing everywhere in the east Randy, so get out there and whore out Atlanta like it was Cincinnati! :)

September 9, 200717 yr nice work and its certainly good to see streetlife in this thread too. well its great to see it i have to say except for "the fabulous fox theater" none of that does anything for me. in fact, some of it is just fugly. i much prefer the grittinati over the sterile biblebeltopia.
September 10, 200717 yr David, interesting to note is that the Viewpoint from the "180's" was from the "200's" about 2 weeks ago...but you get about 650SF for that price...the condo market in midtown and Buckhead has gotten pretty saturated...and across the street, the Spire, also built by Novare and very similar in size and design has over 50 units for resale out of about 300 total. Actually, if Western Southern ever gets off its ass, they may want to copy Novare's model for high rise condo construction on 5th and Race. They've given up space to keep prices "low" while offering lifestyle and amenity. Unfortunately, their model in ATL has begun to resememble a "cookie-cutter" high rise because so much of their architecture and design is similar. Randy, I would also mention about the Midtown Mile and the 1.2MM+ SF of retail on its way between North and 14th Streets on Peachtree... While not perfect, Midtown offer's Atlanta's best shot at urbanity in the near term...that's why I live there. Go Bengals...

Has it changed a lot? I have fond memories of staying with my grandparents there as a youth (okay, 8 years ago). Then they moved to Big Canoe (eww). I heard they're adding a Varsity near Alpharetta or something, I can't remember where it was exactly, but I saw a sign saying one was going in.
September 11, 200717 yr Nice shots... Midtown's my fave Atlanta hood, too. It kind of reminds me of Chicago's Gold Coast areas, w/ sleek highrises, low-rise older walkup buildings and mixed-users. ... and yes, lots of foot traffic through several retail/restaurant districts; MARTA rail serves Midtown quite well.
September 11, 200717 yr David, Marietta is doing quite well. The square has been revitalized and the old Strand theatre is expected to reopen soon. The city is trying to increase the amount of homeownership and has created many TAD districts (TIF) to encourage redevelopment (ie forcing out renters and other more income challenged people.) There is a new Varsity in Alpharetta off of Holcomb Bridge Road, exit nine off of lovely GA400, but prefer the Varsity in Midtown after a drunken day of watching Tech across the connector

I just wouldn't want a slew of them in the city (which I really don't think Cincinnati is at risk of that). If it is a model that can create affordable housing units that attract young people...then I say great.
September 13, 200717 yr ^ That's because they are all going to NKY :) I wouldn't mind seeing a mixture of building styles in Cincinnati (or NKY). Glass/steel structures, maybe a few mixed up with some masonry and brick, etc.
