Posted September 9, 200717 yr Potential Neighborhoods: Tremont & Ohio City. I think downtown has priced itself out. Pricepoint is a bit above what I'm looking for and the parking costs component of downtown are also high. I don't need my car daily, but I do have clients across Ohio, and I do travel semi-frequently, so I'd like to keep my car handy without paying parking fees. I don't need you guys to go around searching for me, I'm looking for maybe a specific building recommendation, or a specific landlord which someone can recommend. The clv-lofts people seem to have good properties, but for the most part they seem overpriced. For the most part I've been cruising craiglist, the backpages and plugged in Cleveland. Ohio City's Rental market doesn't seem to be as robust. Or I'm looking in the wrong places. If I were to live in Ohio City, I would want to be moderately close to the action and the rapid station. The one building that seems appealing to me is the West Virginia Building. The High $600s price is about the upper limit for me. Other buildings like the Metzner or Merril seem a bit pricey for my needs. Tremont since its a bit more spread out seems a more likely choice. This is where I have concerns, since there are so many individual landlords. And given Tremont's complexion, its seems there's a bit wider range of available properties. I'm finding mostly individual landlord properties here. I work downtown, so I'm focusing on these areas for their high service by RTA. MyTwoSense, if you recommend Shaker Square, I will ban you.
September 10, 200717 yr What exact size and price point? a lot of oc and tremont have just for-rent signs on the street. you may want to take some drives around.I am sure I will get people really bent out of shape...BUT, I think tremont is a little quieter these days on the crime front (protect self from flames and attiitude) . that said, I think it is easier to get to DT from OC. I love the cv loft thing but they are a little over priced. i wil keep my eye out....try posting on tremonter. com forum.
September 10, 200717 yr Size isn't a big issue. Anything larger than a Studio, but just because its a 1br and only 350 Sq. Ft. I would probably avoid it. If there's something with a 2nd room marketed as an office b/c of dimensions I'd be happy. Price wise, I dunno. I'm feeling it out. I'd say max would be about 650, but anything lower would be great. Maybe I will take a drive next weekend and write down some phone numbers. Do you think I would receive a decent response by posting on the tremonter?
September 10, 200717 yr "Do you think I would receive a decent response by posting on the tremonter?" Possibly, but it's really hit or miss - the owner/admin means well but he doesn't seem to be able to handle the trolls/flaming very well. That's definitely a forum where anything you read should be taken with a grain of salt. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
September 10, 200717 yr ^there is no moderation whatsoever, but there a lot of community folks on there none the less. Its not like Pope is trying to rent an apartment from 1000 miles away. he can look at anything before renting. for the record, SOME of those rambling kooks on tremonter.com are hitting the nail on the head in some areas. you'll see what they mean once you have been in the nieghborhood a while. its all timing wiith regard to finding the dream place...
September 10, 200717 yr Believe me, I know what the "kooks" are referring to - I was the first renter to ever attend a Holmden-Rowley-Buhrer block club meeting back in 1998 (this ain't my first time in Tremont). I'm well aware of a lot of history and inner workings of neighborhood development corps., their inner workings with local politicos, neighborhood activists, etc. Many of the complaints they have now are the same they had then - some are very legit, but when they can make those complaints *without* the rambling diatribes accompanying EVERY single time, they might actually get some resolution. I wouldn't ever suggest that legit info CAN'T be found on tremonter, just that there might be a lot of sifting to go through to get it :-) Back on topic, peabody's made a great point - a lot of individual landlords in Tremont tend to stick a sign out front and that's it for their advertising. A visit wouldn't take too long to do on a weekend afternoon (and of course give you more familiarity with the lay of the land). As far as direct access to downtown, Ohio City has Tremont beat but that's more of a testament to Ohio City's abundance of transit choices (rail, bus lines, etc.) than Tremont's lack thereof. I will say that I know from experience that Ohio City is a cheaper cab ride ;-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
September 10, 200717 yr I realize there is going to be a trade-off with transit efficiency living in Tremont, I think I'm willing to live with it (as the 81 and the circulator run "late-enough" to serve most of my needs)
September 10, 200717 yr Don't know if there's availablity, but this might be an option Bender Building 2519 Market Street Cleveland, Ohio 44113 1 bedroom - $650 216-325-0500

September 10, 200717 yr No. I'm apartment hunting as well and just came across the listing for the building at http://www.3streetsnorth.com/
September 10, 200717 yr I looked at West Virginia a couple of years back ... great building on the inside, but it was on the high end of my price range and there were very few availabilities. Unless something has changed there, I think it would be on the high end of your range as well.
September 10, 200717 yr Re: your first paragraph, Pope- I don't know what is open right now (maybe you checked already), but it is possible to find a few units Downtown in the mid to high $600 range, including parking. Also, factor in transportation costs when figuring the affordability of a neighborhood. For example, if you save $15/week on transit passes because you walk instead of take the rapid to work, that adds up and gives you an extra $60-$75 to spend on rent, or beer.
September 10, 200717 yr X, is there any buildings that immediately jump into your mind that are in that price-range? (just names, I can find them myself)

Sign-hunting is the best way to go; it gives you a feel for the 'hood that listings can't. Pack a cellphone, and oftentimes the landlord/manager will zip down and give you a showing. Sometimes you can go and try the handle and it'll be open. Better still, if it's a new availability, there might actually be someone in there cleaning up and ready to spill the beans about their boss.
September 10, 200717 yr I had a friend who rented in the Metzner building on 25th. I thought that it looked great. It was $650 for a one bedroom. Bamboo floors, high ceilings, open floor plan. Very nice.

September 10, 200717 yr Check out the residential directory of www.downtown-digs.com. Granted, it's on the outskirts of downtown, but you might check out Tower Press (http://www.towerpress.com/) ... One bedroom loft spaces from $625 with secure parking included as a component of your rent. There's also a cafe, yoga studio and artist lofts on site. As an added bonus, you might land a unit that overlooks the sunshine factory that is the Plain Dealer, and if that doesn't brighten your day, I don't know what will.
September 10, 200717 yr I actually have a downtown Cleveland apt guide here, so this should be a pretty comprehensive list of apts that may meet your price range. I'm not sure about parking rates at any of these but for East 4th, but the following are contenders, based on their rents and depending on availability of the lower priced units and what their actual parking rates are (I assumed $100/month because that is the rate for East 4th): East 4th District- $500 and up (parking is $100) Huron Square Apartments- $600 and up National Terminal- $591 and up The Osborn- $600 and up Tower Press (I think parking is fairly cheap compared to other downtown units)- $625 and up Worthington Square- $600 and up Like I said, I think when you figure in all your costs downtown starts to be more affordable than the rents make it seem.
September 10, 200717 yr ^slowly, slowly, move him east so my2cents can have him on Shaker Square. Tower P is nice, but pricey $100 sq ft to rent. I get the feeling pope is trying to live a nearly- car- free- cafe lifestyle. so if it were me, I would go for the market square location in OC, and if not feasible, do tremont if you are going to go in a more residential neighborhood thing (ie living in a double). I don't have time now, but I will PM you with some of my reasoning in the next day or so.
September 10, 200717 yr ^Haha! No just inching him the few extra blocks to Asiatown, where you get the real rent steals! As far as car-free lifestyle goes, definitely the Market Ave. spot would provide great access to transit, as would locations over in Orchard Park or along Bridge or Jay. But my personal opinion is that Tower Press, with frequent bus service and many, many lines running just 2 blocks to the west, is far more mass transit-friendly than most spots in Tremont. As with all of these looking for apartment threads, I think there's a lot of availability for the Pope's price range in Tremont, OC & Downtown ... will just come down to which amenities / immediate neighborhood features he prefers.
September 10, 200717 yr If you have some time to walk around, Jay Ave usually has some very reasonable rents for such a fantastic street. My friends had a huge 2 bedroom that they rented for $650. They just moved out and for all I know it might still be available.
September 10, 200717 yr ^^Curious (and some what unrelated to Pope's plea), have they started the rehab of Tower Press. When is it suppose to be completed?
September 10, 200717 yr Tower Press's renovation has been finished for a number of years now. Usually the only complaints I hear are that it's "overfinished" ... that it's too polished for loft space. It's a great building full of artist studios, art galleries, a cafe, a yoga studio, a boutique gym, etc. Definitely worth checking out. Were you maybe thinking of Gospel Press?
September 10, 200717 yr What is wrong with the Vatican? :) Anywho, when I worked at Treehouse, a lot of the bartenders and regulars owned multi-unit houses and were always looking for people to rent....but that was 4 years ago Stop in and ask for Eileen the GM, or Paul, or Margot. They should be able to help you. Also try Sherman at Southside.
September 10, 200717 yr Hey Pope, When I lived in Tremont, my buddy and I had a 2-br in the Chelsea bldg on W. 14th st, just south of La Tortilla Feliz(adjacent to 490). It was $650 and included utilities. It also had its own parking lot behind the bldg. I believe the owner was "Primo" properties or something like that. Good luck with the search.

If that's the same "primo" properties from the East side, I will be avoiding that building like the plague. Punch, thanks for the tip.
September 10, 200717 yr 8Shades...your right I was thinking of the Gospel Press. I thought I might be confusing the two projects.
September 11, 200717 yr Pope needs to live somewhere within stumbling distance of GLBC so UOers have someplace to crash after monthly meets. :drunk:
September 11, 200717 yr Pope needs to live somewhere within stumbling distance of GLBC so UOers have someplace to crash after monthly meets. :drunk: a) I'll pitch a tent in market square b) well the monthly meet will hypothetically be moving every month and I don't know if I'll be able to move once a month.
September 27, 200717 yr MyTwoSense, if you recommend Shaker Square, I will ban you. Oh no you di-in't!  I just caught this thread, so this is how you treat me when im gone! Fine, take your a$$ to the westside! See if I care! Get'ta gettin' already!!
