September 19, 20177 yr I don't know about that. Construction workers eat a lot of sub sandwiches and down plenty of coffee, plus suds after work. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a short term uptick at Cosmic Daves, Moriarty's, or the coffee shop. Fortunately, they're all pretty good places with a decent following.

September 19, 20177 yr Also need to point out that Tabu (closed) and Porcelli's (moved) because those spaces are currently undergoing a full renovation as part of the whole leader project. So it wasn't necessary due to the nearby construction.
September 19, 20177 yr There are hundreds of things that must be done before "watchable" construction begins. I am assuming the building will be framed in reinforced concrete. Too bad, steel framing is so interesting to watch. I am also assuming that Short Vincent will be the lay down area which might be out of range for the crane. So a feed area, within crane range must be established somewhere. It's a steel building with slab on metal deck.
September 20, 20177 yr Well then we will see how the steel frame is attached to the concrete base. 55 Public Square is half concrete, half steel. I never understood that, but I saw it happen. Steel is easier to handle than concrete and won't require a fleet of mixers. But steel supply needs large trucks and can be capricious in supply as it comes from somewhere else, not Cleveland or Pittsburgh anymore. That might explain the position of the crane within the building perimeter. Better for placing steel, quite difficult for concrete, no other place to put it.

I would assume that if that crane is sitting there, the first batches of steel are probably fabricated and on their way or closer to being shipped. Later portions are probably in production as we speak and the final pieces are probably going through shop drawing approvals if they have not already. Whoever the fabricator/erector is most likely has all the steel needed bought or on hold.

Good point!! :-D Moriarty's and a law firm in the Baker Building (who is also the lawyer for Moriarty's) are both suing the owners of the Garfield building for loss of business during construction. I guess construction workers go offsite to drink and/or meet with their attorneys.
September 20, 20177 yr Moriarty's, once my favorite downtown haunt has really gotten a bit shady with some of the bartenders that are staffed there. In my recent experiences, aside from a long time bartender and the owner, they're drunk and over charge.
September 22, 20177 yr i got a feverish request... and the only prescription... is more crane-bell! please!!!
September 22, 20177 yr A pic from the St Ed's rowing crew gives us an indication as to where Beacon will appear from the lake.
September 26, 20177 yr The Crane looks beautiful as ever during sunrise... you know, still not doing anything... But still appreciated one way or another...
September 26, 20177 yr There is a lot of work happening on the site. Last week they've been removing glass panels from the top of the garage.
September 26, 20177 yr From today at lunch. Not much to look at, but here's the proof that the top glass panels have been removed.
September 26, 20177 yr Are they removing all thepanels Or just the top panels? looks like they removed the panels on the side too, so assuming they're going to strip the facade.
September 26, 20177 yr looks like they removed the panels on the side too, so assuming they're going to strip the facade. It's actually just the top row that has been removed on that eastern side of the building. I'd think they'd only be removing the top row?? If they were going to remove more, they could have gotten more taken down by now then just the top row.

September 27, 20177 yr I really think Stark should at least start the garage at Nucleus considering he's going to lose a decent amount of spaces in the 515 Garage to Beacon residents.
September 27, 20177 yr Should we rename this tread to The Beacon? https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
September 27, 20177 yr I really think Stark should at least start the garage at Nucleus considering he's going to lose a decent amount of spaces in the 515 Garage to Beacon residents. Why would he since with the increased demand for parking he can just charge more at the beacon and the lots he owns by The Q and spend nothing. Especially if Nucleus is not a sure thing yet.

September 29, 20177 yr Heck's Cafe opened at 515 Euclid Ave. Quite a nice buildout and addition to The Beacon
September 29, 20177 yr ^ thats pretty cool to have them downtown. hows the burger these days? it used to be the best.

October 3, 20177 yr For those who know, how do they attach the steel frame to the existing concrete garage? Thanks.
October 4, 20177 yr The garage was already outfitted with a plan to build ontop of it when the time came. Structurally it was pre built with the support the building needed. I'm assuming they just need to expose those supports within the structure and reinforce them. It would kind of make sense to reinforce them because we're adding more weight to the equation.
October 4, 20177 yr This is an interesting article relating to the challenges of building atop an existing parking structure. Much like 515 it is becoming more common. https://www.bdcnetwork.com/above-beyond-condo-tower-built-atop-parking-structure In response to Sooner's question, I'm not sure if the same method will be used in this tower, but Freethink found an article several months back explaining how this process was done in another tower and it could give clues to Stark's approach for this one. Apologies for no specific knowledge on this project.
October 4, 20177 yr The Illuminating Building (1956 - 55 Public Square) is half concrete half steel (top half). But it was a continuous build. The magazine article shows eccentric forms (triangular shaped, a rubrick of engineering) to transfer loading that is not centered between structural systems. Because 515 was designed in total, I assume everything lines up. Maybe the steel frame was a concession to the tighness of the site, is designed on a different module, and thus needs to be “lined up” with its concrete predecessor.
October 9, 20177 yr How do I put a picture up next to my name? On the top of the page: Profile > Forum Profile > Personalized Picture then select from the gallery or URL (if you have the link)
October 10, 20177 yr Thank you. I never knew that an avatar=picture. But I can’t enter a picture from the photos on my ipad. Is there a way to do that? I haven’t the slightest idea what its url is.

Check out this thread, and MayDay's post https://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,9751.msg198924.html#msg198924 It's old, but I think the functions still work the same.

October 11, 20177 yr Are we sure it wasn't the wind?? Is there anything being done on site?? It was a ghost town when I walked by this morning
October 11, 20177 yr Pfft. Amateur crane watchers. :-D "Putting the crane in the out-of-service condition generally includes ensuring that the jib is free to “weather vane” when out of service so that the minimum wind area is presented to the prevailing wind. On luffing jib tower cranes it is also important that the jib is left at the correct out of service radius (specified by the crane manufacturer, which is not always the minimum radius. This will ensure that there is sufficient wind area to enable the crane to “weather vane” http://www.ritchiestraining.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Tower-Crane-Operators-Handbook-LR.pdf The most activity I've seen (including today around noon) was some scaffolding being dropped off - looks like they're setting that up around the existing elevator core. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
October 11, 20177 yr Yesterday around lunch time I saw the crane moving a big metal bin around. So there are some things being done at the site, but it doesn't seem like much "visible" work ... yet!!!

The first time I ever went to the top of the new WTC1 I looked down at the construction of WTC3. The crane on top wasn't weathervaning like intended but was instead spinning rapidly in a circle. It was sort of concerning from street level to see the crane circling endlessly. It was doing that for at least 6 hours that it was in visible range from where I was. Having moved to NYC I've become desensitized to cranes (unfortunately) but it was exciting to see this on the skyline when I was home in Cleveland a few weeks ago. It'll help fill a gap nicely.
October 28, 20177 yr A few days ago I was driving up 77 in the morning. Looked like the crane was picking something up, because i could see the cables to the hook were all the way down. Glad we're back! although I had to reset my account because somehow it wasn't on record even joining well prior to the forum. Who said learning to walk wasn't hard?
November 3, 20177 yr Just heard that the Leader is having a tough time retaining tenants whose units face the Beacon construction due to the noise. So be assured there is plenty of work going on at the site.
