Another great shot! This one is the first “reality shot” matching Stark’s promotional rendering of The Beacon in context of the neighborhood on Euclid.  

To me, this photo highlights just how massive the BP Building is, even as just the third tallest building in the city.

You mean where the construction elevator is attached? No, that area doesn't even have the yellow insulated panels installed yet. Many of the floors just have plywood to keep out the weather. The cladding won't be installed here until the elevator comes down. There are closer pics posted upthread.

I'm anxious to see how they will apply the final metal cladding. I think the color and tonal graduation, moving from darker on the lower levels to lighter at the top will create a sense of vertical movement and make the building look taller.

That’s the exact idea with the design of the facade.  I think this will be a building, much like the Hilton, where once completed, we’ll hear people saying, “it looks even better than I expected..”  I’m also looking forward to how it will look at night, as it supposedly will be very well illuminated and have that multi story “The Beacon” lettering at the top.

The night illumination and the dark-to-light graduation of the facade will grab the eye of pedestrians on the ground and pull them skyward, giving the illusion of a taller structure. From a distant skyline vantage point the draduated cladding should appear to shimmer, acting as a visual "Beacon" on the skyline. This is just excellent architecture!

 Although the 29 story building doesn’t make a big statement vertically - obviously it effectively fills a gap as many have previously noted - but today I began to appreciate how one new tower of its size can really help add density and the feeling of depth in the skyline.  I had a good  view of downtown from the top of the hill on State Road in Parma and could easily see the yellow Beacon, now in the foreground of Erieview Tower.  The latter building was no longer fully visible from that perspective.  The city seemed to already have a slightly more complex, bigger city feel because of the depth perceived from that particular view. I’m sure there are any number of skyline perspectives that will be nicely enhanced by the Beacon’s presence.  The shimmering effect of the lighting mentioned by ArtmasterCLE might make that especially true at night. 

^Agree 100%, the view of it from the 490 bridge changes the skyline entirely. The Lumen will add some width as well, and two average sized towers will completely change the skyline.

No touchdown? I'm very disappointed.

They got it down to where the video ends and started securing it, but that looked like it was going to be a while.

I totally agree with CleveFan an YAB0713's observation of The Beacon's contextual impact on the skyline. What excites me is the awesome effect the undulating graduation of the metal cladding will have on the completed building. What NADAAA Architects has done is to take a basic rectangular structure and, through innovative use of colored metal panels and textural variation, created a truly iconic building that sets a tone of design excellence and holds its own against much taller neighboring buildings.

 

Kudos to Bob Stark for refusing to accept mediocrity.

Still better than blue or ugly mirror glass.

How do they lift the metal panels of the facade into place without a crane?  Do we know when those panels start going in? 

Excellent question on both accounts, CleveFan! I've been wondering the same thing. When they start to apply the metal panels the real transformation will start.

I thought I saw them starting to put the swing stages up for that work last week, but maybe that was the John Hartness Brown Buildings I am mixing up. I would think they'd want to close in the building as much as possible before winter for sure and the spring rainy season.

 

Indirectly related - now that the crane is down, the sidewalk on the north side of Euclid is back open to pedestrians ?

I was thinking that we’re still going to get some additional height (in a sense) with The Beacon - when the lighted “Beacon” letters, which look about 2 stories high, go up.  But when looking at the promotional rendering, I noticed that the letters face west, where seemingly most of the view of those letters would be blocked by 200 Publuc Square. Wonder why they wouldn’t be facing south?

The signage seems very old school to me. It may very well be a nostalgic reference to the old Superman comic books.

Covered sidewalks like in Bologna? Good idea but will nevah happen!

They’re all over the place in Manhattan, especially midtown  - given Cleveland weather, they make some sense. 

In the City Club thread, we were speculating on how tall their possible new apartment building, rumored to be in development, could be. KJP had commented that the “Beacon  tower is about 307,800 sf. That's an average of 1,645 sf per unit.”  His math is right if 187 units there are evenly divided into that total square footage number.  I’m not a math person, but it got me looking at the Beacon website- there are now floor plans for the units there.  I count at least 29 different floor plans - which seems like a lot of diversity  for a 187 unit building. 16 of those 29 are 1 bedroom apartments- the rest 2 bedrooms. The smallest is 803 square feet, - the largest is 1959. For a new construction apartment tower, some generous sized units.  The largest one looks especially sweet!  Love those floor to ceiling windows all around! 

I find this kind of ironic, and may be a little offtopic.
I just find it hilarious and ironic that Google Maps decided to update development on the Beacon but has yet to retake aerials of public square. Its been what, 3 years now?

 

As you can see here they're building the elevator core here, with the crane visible as a shadow on the garage.

 

And here's public square 1.0 on present day Google Maps. It has the right outlines though. SMH.

I believe the elevator shaft has always been there. The 2d satellite images google currently uses have the updated Public Square, btw. Globe view is behind a few years with their satellite imagery.

Although it's not a huge building, it sure does nicely plug a hole in the skyline from many angles.   It really adds some visual density.

They adorned the scaffolding with Christmas lights, haha. 

It looks like windows are going in.
