He's probably referring to the fact that Ohio State University and University of Cincinnati are large state universities. Case Western Reserve University is academically on par with the best schools in the country, but it's a relatively small (~5,000 undergraduates and ~6,000 postgraduates) private school whose enrollment is international in character, meaning it's almost certain that a smaller proportion of them stay in Cleveland after graduation in comparison to those moving to attend OSU and UC. And yes, while we do have Cleveland State, I'd argue that beyond its smaller size (about half as many students as UC and a quarter as many as OSU), it's in no way an actual peer, whether academically or in prestige, to the major public universities in Cincinnati and Columbus.
July 2, 20177 yr This discussion sheds light on why I love Ronald Berkman leading CSU. I know he has caught some criticism - most notably for his comfortable lifestyle - but he has done an incredible job with Cleveland State. If we were to look at the Campus District in 2010 versus what it is now it is not even comparable. The new nursing, NEOMed, Student Center, and now engineering buildings are incredible. Not to mention the fact that in 2008, there were about 900 CSU students living full time in the campus district. Next fall there will be over 5,000. From what I have heard, it is Berkman's vision to leave the school as an "actual" college campus. I know some years back there was talk of changing the school's name to Cleveland University, but I'm not certain that would make a huge difference with perception. All in all, I think we could have a very, very nice, expansive university by 2022. The major issue with housing is the lack of traditional "front porch" housing that so many schools rely upon, such as Ohio State and UC. The Langston has been a nice addition and the Edge looks to be a fun addition as well, but I wouldn't mind seeing a surface lot converted into college-appropriate row homes. The addition of lacrosse has been a terrific move as well, as the Vikings have only the 2nd D1 lax program in the state.
July 3, 20177 yr This begs the question...how do universities grow to become an OSU or UC in size and prestige? How does CSU become a more academically elite university? I would imagine the answer involves numerous factors and hopefully CSU is heading in the right direction. It would be amazing for CSU to one day be one of the premiere state universities in Ohio, and right in the middle of our downtown core! Is that even possible?

Not everyone is going to go for a bachelor's right away, and not everyone SHOULD be at a four year. The trends are showing that more jobs will require at least an associates' or some training and these are decent paying jobs, and that people will be "thinking twice" before sending their kids off to college for 50K in debt. We're already seeing it in Pennsylvania with our state university enrollment (I am aware this isnt the ONLY reason). Second, I pointed out earlier in the thread that there is STILL a frightening level of disdain for Community Colleges in this part of the country, which has an effect on retention and graduation rates, something that the south and west are killing us at. Why? They have modern facilities, modern programs that fit their areas, and fantastic matriculation agreements and partnerships with their local universities and colleges. I remember we would always head down to University Circle to that former Mexican restaurant that is now a 5-story? apartment building, and it's hard to think in just 6 or 7 years it was all just massive surface parking lots along the Healthline stops in Uptown, but that's discussion for another area and another thread. Walking back to the hotel it was nice to see continual activity from CSU, PHS, all the way down to 9th.

I had classes in the following buildings: Urban Affairs College- torn down and replaced by Glickman-Miller Hall Corlett Building (pictured above) - also torn down and replaced by Glickman-Miller Hall Main Classroom Building- completely gutted and renovated When I attended, the only official dorms were Viking Hall. I lived in unofficial student housing at Heritage Suites, above the Y. Other students thought I was weird for living on campus. Now that is official student housing, Viking Hall is gone, and about 2-3000 students live on or near campus. It's like a whole different school. And I haven't even touched on the fact that when I attended there were almost no foreign students.

When Berkman arrived at CSU, 900 students lived on campus and another 600-700 in the campus district. As of last year (unless I am wrong, which I could be), I believe of CSU's 17,500 full time students, approximately 4,500 live in the Campus District. Berkman has said openly that he would like to get the enrollment of the school to around 25,000 with at least 10,000 living "on campus."

September 20, 20177 yr 4,500 divided by 10 is 450 people per development. That's a bit high but it's aided by the 601 beds in the Euclid Commons. Although Fenn Tower has only 438 beds. To meet Berkman's housing goal, I would think the Wolstein Center has to go, the Norton Furniture building has to be converted, and Clayco would have to build another Edge building. One choice not listed below, but found elsewhere on the CSU web site is a place called University Studio Apts at 29th & Euclid. The info on this apt building for students says there are 150 units. Not sure what they mean by "units" as the building does not look big enough to hold 150 "apts"/units. Another choice, 2320 Superior is marketed for students of CSU, and it is not on this list also. According to the info on 2320 Superior, it has 11units/34 beds. As CSU continues to grow, so have the number of housing options adjacent to campus. These communities are just steps from campus and provide a wealth of living options. (says the CSU web site) 1.) Reserve Square 2.) Statler Arms 3.) The Edge on Euclid 4.) 1900 Euclid Avenue Lofts 5.) University Lofts 6.) The Langston 7.) The Domain at Cleveland 8.) Walker & Weeks 9.) Euclid Commons 10.) Fenn Tower 11.) University Commons So, with all the on-campus living, off-campus living, near-campus living in the Campus District, 4500 students being non-commuters is a good thing. September 21, 20177 yr Would Tower Press and 2320 Superior count as campus district? Technically speaking campus district runs from the lake all the way down to tri-c... But those developments probably don't have much in terms of CSU student housing.

I agree that more residential students is a great thing for downtown. I was unaware that there were already 4,500 students living near CSU. That would mean a large part of the DT population is students. All good news.
