It seems strange that Giant Eagle would locate here. They seem to be moving out of city neighborhoods. We shall see.

Here

Could possibly be for a warehouse or for prepared foods. Where do they prepare their foods now? For comparison, the Heinen's property in Maple Hts where they prepare theirs appears to be a similar size.

I don't know what Giant Eagle is planning, but it better at least have an urban footprint. The buildings proposed to be demolished are 2 stories and built right to the sidewalk.

Unfortunately there is no zoning or overlay requiring that here.

Has anybody heard anything at all concerning the gloriously beautiful and long vacated Cuyahoga County Juvenile Courts building on East 22nd St? It's almost a criminal act to allow such a historical and wonderful landmark building like this to be left to rot. I know that several previous plans were in place to redevelop this mammoth complex, but for one reason or another they all have fallen thru.

It's really a shame, this would be perfect for restoration as housing or perhaps something else of meaningful usage.

The last time I've read anything about this was in 2017.

^ thanks for asking about this and reminding me of it. i hope someone has some better news? or eventually does. the old detention center is a beautiful and historic campus in a pretty cool little area. it absolutely should be redeveloped into housing or housing and a combination of other things. low income, geriatric, straight up gentrification, a mix, whatever, but something. it would be a real catalyst for what could be quite an interesting mini neighborhood.

not to be too flip about it, but leaving it to rot away for nothing is a yet another crime it is associated with! hopefully the city can help a developer revamp it.

for some comparison, the nyc verison of this, spofford in hunts point, bronx, is being town down for an all new development call peninsula. spofford was built in 1957 and is hideous garbage of a building, so its going away at last to the relief of the neighborhood. youth detention has been split up across the city. more:

Wow, look at the CPC photos of the bowling alley at 1812 East 30th that's proposed to be demolished. I didn't know it's a two-level bowling alley. Now I understand the name "Twin Lanes." Although the upper level is unused, with dusty bowling balls still sitting in a rack and the ceiling partially collapsed. But the first level looks just fine, except for the temporary wall off to one side. What does it hide??

Sad. I have to wonder...if this bowling alley had been just a block or two closer to CSU would it still be in business?

Damn shame. I was in there just several months ago and chatted with the owner for a bit. The owner honestly had been looking to get out of the business; they liked the lack of publicity, "kept it quiet", she said.

Avoiding publicity about your business is a sure way to get out of it. Selling for a good price is another....

My fraternity as CWRU used to use that place a few times a year.  Don't know how long it's been out of business, but I bowled there a few times 10+ years ago.

Definitely was hidden, but I had always assumed by design.

Regarding the GetGo site, just a guess but I think it might be one of these. It is a new concept from GetGo for a stand alone convience store without the pumps. And it mentions Ohio as one of the targets. But it still doesn't explain the BP station. You wouldn't think the developer would want to share the site with a competitor. And it seems at times to take an act of Congress to close or move a gas station. Guess we will find out soon.

I think that this type of development is a waste in this area you are trying to build up. Maybe if it had a couple of floors of residential, office or both on top of this with the convenience store then that would be fine. Having this by itself seems like a waste, at least build this to the sidewalk.

I would be surprised if they don't include pumps (assuming it is indeed a Getgo).  Downtown only has 2 gas stations- both BP, and both are poorly run and maintained.  A smart competitor could eat their lunches.

While I would love to see mixed use in this area, the lack of development nearby suggests that a single-use building is likely. Drive North up East 27th street from Chester to Payne to see how forgotten and neglected this area truly is.  Thankfully, someone is finally putting some investment here, even if it is just a gas station with a fancy convenience store.

The new GetGo on 224 in Boardman has both convenience store and gas.

I hate to be the one to put a pin prick to this balloon and unbridled excitement ... But WHY is it that there's so much celebration revolving around a Get-Go Food Mart & Gas Station? I realize that ANY development in this location is a positive, but my goodness ... So much thrill over a glorified filling station. ?

More fueling locations are definitely needed in this area, but we need to be more excited about projects that will continue to propel this city upwards.

Get-Go doesn't exactly fit that bill.

Where’s the celebration? It’s just your typical Urban Ohio discussion (or speculation) on what future development might be in the pipeline.

The "celebration" is the mere fact that there's been sooooo much conversation over the potential for a filling station! ?

There is already an abandoned jiffy lube diagonally across the intersection that could be built up as another gas station much more easily.  Why go to all the effort to tear down an existing building to be immediately adjacent a competitor?  Makes no sense.

How much of the lack of redevelopment in this area is the result of concerns about the effects of a dead-man's curve realignment that may or may not happen in the next decade?

Does that side stack with traffic for 2-3 hours every week day evening with people on their way home? If not, then that is probably why.

It's the same reason Walgreens tries to locate on the "going home" side of whatever road they plan to build a store. It makes it more convenient for people in heavy traffic on their way home.

Demolition for the old bowling alley for a GetGo was tabled at design review. This really needs to be more than just a gas station and convenience store.

Comments

1) Provide contet photos w/canopy & pumps

2) Has there been any analysis for traffic stacking?

3) There are major educational institutions with a presence in the area (CSU & Campus International School) that strengthen the strategy of keeping a built edge

4) University Commons apartment building to the south of the site and Asiatown to the north are both areas where walkability should be encouraged

5) This development will influence the future of the BP station. Eventually, if the GetGo is successful and the BP goes out of business, we are left with a challenged site potentially deemed unbuildable.

Those are all constructive thoughts/critiques. Congrats to design review.

Not a fan of #5.  Zoning rules shouldn't be used to protect old businesses that aren't making investment to compete for business against newer, higher quality alternatives.

I agree with you. But maybe this is karma coming back at Giant Eagle.

I really like the board. They're very engaged and trying to make sure that projects are what's best for the city.

A few weeks back, I went to a Cleveland State lacrosse game (which they won...and side note, it's extremely impressive how well the team has done considering it was only their third season of Division 1 play). Of course, this game was played inside the Krenzler Dome. I have never been inside this facility, and I was pretty underwhelmed by the general appearance, seating, and especially the lighting. I even heard that the conference banned softball games inside the dome.

With that said, does the school have any plans to renovate or replace this facility? I have been to other temporary domed fieldhouses that are much nicer and well-lit. It's definitely not a great look for a quality D1 program to be playing all their home games there.

CSU just renovated Krenzler Field last year for $2.9 million.

^^^Thanks, but my question was specifically around the "dome" that appears to occupy that site for most of the year. Perhaps others don't agree that it needs a facelift and an updated lighting scheme on the interior.

I’ve never been under the dome, but it is usually well gone by this time of year. I don’t know why it’s still up as the icy weather is way behind us.

On Prospect across from the Wolstein Center.

Not sure where they are in their progress, but I just went by today and saw workers still working and part of the sidewalk and street closed with construction vehicles working around it.

I walk by alot as I sometimes park in the parking lot next door when I am heading to CSU. The windows and most of the brick work are all completed. I am unsure about interior work.

Got an email from the CSU Mountaineering Club that a Rock Climbing gym is going to be going into the retail location next to the Amazon pickup location on Euclid. Exciting news! I'm not sure how they can fit it in there, but good luck to them on the efforts!

It looks like it's going to be called Nosotros, and they seem to have a location in Lakewood. I'm excited to see what is to come!1892415507_mountainclimbinggym.PNG.e0b8a3abc28412a779412c5235a5b255.PNG

Nosotors is currently in the basement of a church next to my house. There's alot of people who go there. They seem to have more than a rock climbing gym, they had a semi full weightroom too judging by photos I see on their Instagram.

Kudos to the developer, Woda Group, for building affordable apartments for downtown residents in the service industry. Much, much more of this is needed to replenish old housing stock in the core and to provide decent housing for those who are less affluent.

^ very cool to see inside of there and get a glimpse of the work the did.
