Those look so much better than I could have imagined. I do hope they replace or remove the Connor Palace banner above the doors though with something a little more cleaned up. Seems a bit redundant with the new marquee. Excited to see these lit up!

I actually think I saw them removing that yesterday afternoon. Also, the new planters and patio fences look great. I hadn’t noticed them before.

Thats cool. I think even just putting some gold filigree where the names were would work pretty well.

hope city club gets some kind of marquee going at their new spot

A few pics during intermission last night. It wasn't as dark out as I was hoping. Still work to do on the underside of the Connor marquee. Can't wait to see it finished and all lit up!

Does anyone know if the gaps caused by the replacement LED panels above the marquees be filled in?

Connor Palace Marquee from above. The other marquees on Euclid still waiting their turn.

Noticed this on my ride down Euclid today - is this construction related or part of the PHSQ overhaul?

Isn’t one of the smaller theatres getting an entrance?

i kind of like the redundant connor signage. its a look. the old and the new. whatever they do would be fine tho.

edit — i see they took the old sign off.

anyway, wow these marquees most definitely look light years better irl than i thought they would via the renders. very nice to see this.

And we’ve got an active jobsite up above!

I favor the look of the Connor Palace's marquee over the Allen's marquee.   The font used is very generic and wish it incorporated the serif font featured on the blade sign above it.

Cleveland State acquires building from Playhouse Square

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State University has acquired the Middough Building in downtown Cleveland from Playhouse Square.

An affiliate of Playhouse Square’s real estate wing sold the property at 1901 E. 13th St. to CSU’s Board of Trustees for an unlisted amount, Cuyahoga County records show.

Are they having a yard sale to save up for a new tower?

Just saw wiring going in at the Allen marquee - maybe lights are coming soon?

Cleveland City Council nears approval on lease for new café in Playhouse Square plaza

Council members on Wednesday, July 12, in a meeting of the Committee of the Whole, voted to move forward with a five-year lease for the [café on the plaza across from the Playhouse Square theaters], with another five-year option. According to the ordinance, the Playhouse Square Foundation will pay the city of Cleveland $1 a year for use of the building, on US Bank Plaza at 1302 Euclid Ave., which will house the Fresh Garden Café. The measure still needs a vote of the entire council, which could come later Wednesday.

The [Fresh Garden Café] plans to offer a menu of salads, sandwiches, pizza and crepes. The idea for it was brought to Playhouse Square by Erdem Bingul, owner of Guys Pizza Co. on Euclid Avenue and East 6th Street, said Tom Einhouse, vice president of facilities and capital for Playhouse Square.

The new café plans to be open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends, with a possible plan to offer limited food-delivery service.

That little plaza is so underutilized.

That little plaza has a lot of potential to be a more popular pedestrian gathering place - it has a  great  urban vibe  -but can also feel a little, “what’s the word?”   “unwelcoming” depending on who is hanging out there.

Maybe this new cafe will help attract more people and help create a more family friendly dynamic at a really cool corner.

agreed. Use to live over there and walked through it all the time and I was so perplexed how underutilized it was. The only real lunch place to grab food to-go was a Subway. I never saw that burger shack open. The cafe should really help workers in the area (both offices and work from home people like the Lumen) get out of their apartments/offices and get some sunshine come lunch time

^ I don't know man...looks hokey to me.

It was nice of Mimi to make a very generous donation, but was it really necessary to add the name to the theater?

The only marquee i LOVE so far is Connor. The way “Mimi” sits on that one looks bizarre.

So far the only one that appears to be elegant is the Connor Palace.  Both the Allen and Mimi Ohio detailing lacks a layer of detail to match the grandeur of the theatre interiors. I don't understand why the font was chosen and why it is in just a straight line. Yes the old marquees needed some repairs but I don't know if these are better replacements that will age as well as what was already there

Now that you say it, they do kind of have a Cinemark Valley View look....

I think it will look better once they add the additional details, if you compare to the rendering there are more decorative elements to come.

Well she did used to work at the department store a couple blocks away 😜

I guess l'll have to wait until the finished product is all lit up at night but at first glance they look a little too plastic for me. Rather than reflecting the grandeur of the theaters inside the marquees look sorta cheap in the pics.

Hope l'm wrong and they look great in person.

I think they look hokey, but then again I thought that the giant chandelier and gateway arches looked awful when installed and they've kind of grown on me.  I'm guessing that in a year or so we won't notice the marquees so much.  But the good thing is that we probably won't be noticing constant burnt-out light bulbs like we saw on the old ones either.

They’d already added the additional details when I passed earlier today, if anyone wants to get an updated pic

I don't know if the added detail is helping this design. Some notes I have.

  1. The center "fan detail" ,above MIMI, feels top heavy and begins to encroach on the central blade sign

  2. The "fan detail" on the marquee returns are very flat from this view. The same with the added stars

  3. The size of Mimi Ohio lettering is under scaled to the marquee size

I also miss that the State and Ohio had matching marquees which had a nice balance to the building.  I'm afraid the same notes I have from this marquee I will apply to the State's

I'm not sure I like them all being the same gold color. I know they plan on doing some kind of lighting at night to distinguish them, but during the day they will all look the same.

the did a good job with the theatre rehabs, but phs really have a gaudy taste when it comes to new design. lol everything is big and gold.

^ Right. When l saw the first renditions l thought the marquees were too uniform. Uniformity is not necessarily a bad thing but it can be. In this case l guess we'll have wait for the finished product but...so far l'm disappointed with what they came up with.

What really bugs me is a bunch of theater marquees in a small area all lit up can be very stimulating. Add greatly to one's mood. And it's not rocket science either. There's no shortage of marquees to copy. But this effort? I don't know...

I don't mind the color, the coordination or the design. I just don't like the material. It looks like plastic (probably because it is, but if it's not it doesn't matter, because it looks like it is). It looks cheap. If these had the same design and colors but looked metallic or stone I'd like them a lot better.

Considering the condition of the marquees that are being replaced, virtually anything would be an improvement. However, if the goal was to attain design continuity throughout all the theaters, it could have still been possible without having each marquee clad with the same ONE color. At night with the lights on, there will be more color and I assume motion, but in daylight, the overall effect is monotonous. My other objection are the curious if not odd designs. There is little to no historic context in consideration here. It's almost as though the designer had never seen an historic theater marquee before and made an arbitrary quess as to what it might look like.

Maybe they used AI to design them.

Seriously they look a little like what an artist or craftsman would create but instead are created by Al after having a bunch of theater marquee pictures downloaded.

I bet these will look great when they are finished and lit up. They don't look cheap at all, IMO. Here is an up close from the playhouse link above.

I played around with the Mimi Ohio marquee to try to fix the proportions . I think if hey could adjust the scale of the lettering in Ohio it helps to balance the aesthetic. I also played with replacing the inset color with a bronze rather than gold to allow the marquee to have some depth during the daylight hours

ahh, excellent work with the close up.

not 100% certain, but that looks like metal. or like aluminum maybe?

i sure would like to see some kind of mini documentary about the unusual process of making of these modern style marquees. i hope one is to come — i mean its a gimmee opportunity for ps or somebody to advantage of.

^ Powder-coated aluminum would be my guess. It’s definitely true that they’re designed to be seen at night, more than the daytime.

You summed up my thoughts 100%. It all looks plastic. I mean, it’s nice, but it doesn’t do what’s inside those buildings any justice.

Fascinating pic, @Barneyboy - you gotta love Urban Ohio - I mean, here I am googling Ethel Shutta!   That pic is probably  from 1936, based on the film showing at the State.

I have photoshopped the underside of the installed marquees and all LED panels for all to see what they should look when completed during daytime conditions. Enjoy
