Pretty disappointing. My gut instinct is this will not be financially productive for the bus companies moving out West. Barons provides one of the few reasonable links from CLE to various far flung parts of Ohio so it's disappointing to lose that point2point journey and that is the selling point of the service for many. It doesn't make sense either if you are only going to Akron to double your journey time heading out to Brook Park or add significant time if say you are heading in the opposite direction to Pittsburgh or Buffalo or something.

That said there's also so few alternatives for regional travel in NEO that I still wouldn't be surprised if the drop off in passenger numbers isn't particularly drastic because of this. They need to come up with something. The CSU safety stuff is nonsense especially if the Downtown alternative is college kids waiting for a bus at a quiet, open to the elements curbside stop late in the day. I also get the impression however that these companies would happily operate out of a crack house if it was a cent cheaper than a Downtown area.

Here is the story from a couple of days ago (updated yesterday), it is behind a paywall: Cleveland State nixed plans for relocated Greyhound bus station near campus

Hopefully somebody can explain how a city college can nix a transit development at a county owned bus station.

The school owns the land and leases it to the RTA.

It's true. After seven years of leading Cushman & Wakefield | CRESCO Real Estate, I’ll be handing over the reins to a new managing director and stepping into a new role at Playhouse Square as President of Real Estate.

Thankfully, I’ll remain part of CRESCO for as long as they’ll have me. CRESCO will continue to be a partner to Playhouse Square, and I’ll continue to support the firm’s long-term growth. In the short term, I’ll be assisting with the transition to new leadership (a search has been underway for some time—stay tuned for exciting news). It’s been an honor to take credit for my colleagues’ work these past seven years, during which we’ve achieved record-breaking growth year after year. The culture here is unrivaled—an intangible that drives superior results for our clients. My team at CRESCO is smart, motivated, intellectually curious, entrepreneurial, and, frankly, very funny too.

A familiar message to my colleagues is: "We are at our best when we’re replaceable." And believe me, I’m replaceable. "By ensuring the machine delivers on the ordinary without our intervention, we can focus on the extraordinary."

Playhouse Square will be my next opportunity to focus on the extraordinary. Playhouse Square is on an incredible trajectory, set by my friends Tom Einhouse, Patty Gaul, Art Falco, and Gina Vernaci, from whom I’ve learned from and been challenged by over the past 15+ years. Their vision has been further energized by Craig Hassall, whose passion for placemaking in support of the performing arts and Cleveland inspired me to take on this role.

Playhouse Square is already more than a collection of theaters, office buildings, retail locations, two multi-family properties, a hotel, an exciting streetscape, and parking for 1,400. But there’s more to be done, not the least of which is expanding the campus north to include the redevelopment of the historic Greyhound site, and bringing more visitors to real destination that always has something going on.

I am thrilled to be joining such a talented, committed team to be part of Playhouse Square’s next chapter.

From Crains article Laura Smith is joining as COO.

"Among her duties was the oversight of the restoration of the Carolina Theatre, which dates from 1927, as well as the installation of an InterContinental Hotel above the theater and expanded and offices for the Foundation."

Seems like Playhouse Square have some new heavy hitter in real estate.

Playhouse Square inches north with $1.6 million building purchase

Playhouse Square Foundation has acquired a quaint, three-story building at 1776 E. 17th St. for its operations and property portfolio.

The foundation on Monday, Sept. 30, paid $1.6 million to the R&R Cleveland Property LLC investor group, according to Cuyahoga County land records. R&R had renovated the building since buying it in 2022 for $640,000.

Wonder if the adjoining parking lot is included or just the building? Seems like they'll keep the building up but wondering if they also wanted it for the extra space adjoining the greyhound lot for whatever they are planning there.

The parking lot to the right of the building is. The parking lot to the left is not.

From Akron and having lived on Huron Rd for 6 years,  awesome! This little area is special and deserves more love. Wishing Eddie's all the success. All seasons, this street is magical but my favorite is summer time. With this space being occupied, now all storefronts on the street are back to 2018 occupancy level. From Jazz Fest, Cavs Playoff runs, Tribe games, lunches during the workday, etc... if you haven't before, hit this street up Zaytoon is incredible, the Mexican spot is back, there's a new Korean spot on the corner, can never go wrong with Wild Eagle or Yours Truly!

The layouts include studios, as well as 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom options. A portion of the units are being reserved for visiting cast and crew members, which was previously reported to be 20 studios.

Rents seem pretty reasonable.  About $2.00 a square foot.  Of course 7-8 years ago we would have thought that price was crazy but with many new builds charging $3.50 and up not so much any more.

AMAZING prices. I can see these selling pretty quickly, maybe not INTRO levels but pretty close.

Does anyone know if the cornice on The Bulkley Building will remain white or is that just a coating to remove years of grime?  It is hard to tell what is going on from posted photos

I don't know.  But it's only half the cornice that is white -- I suspect that this a plastic/fiberglass "replacement" cornice and that it will be painted to match the rest.

The picture of the colors (Can I call them colors?) on the inside of that unit make me feel like we are living inside the the world in "The Giver".

Why can't they take the colors from the common space and put them in the units...

Here’s the Scoop: Ben & Jerry’s to Playhouse Square
By Ken Prendergast / April 10, 2025

While NEOtrans doesn’t normally devote an entire article to the planned opening of a small retail space, this is a new ice cream parlor in a high-profile location. And, of course, everyone loves ice cream, especially when it’s enjoyed before or after a show at America’s second-largest theater district, Cleveland’s Playhouse Square.

This would be almost a replication of what theater-goers would have to look forward to way back when, and just a few doors west of the old Boukair's.

I mean, it's a little thing and yet it's not. In these troubling retail times opening a brick and mortor store in the heart of Playhouse Square is an affirmation of stores AND downtown Cleveland.

Glad to see this addition to Playhouse Square.  I do hope they stay open after shows as Ken indicated, later than the 9 pm of the University Heights location.  I've often been frustrated that none of the restaurants in the Square seem to be open for dining after evening shows, at least on weekends.  Even the Hofbrauhaus closes their kitchen at 9 pm.  With our work hours, there is just enough time to make a 7:30 curtain from Cleveland Heights.  So, dinner is after the show -- in Tremont or somewhere else.

I have always thought the same.  One good pub with decent post show food would make a killing.

I've often thought the same on restaurants staying open.  Even a limited menu of dessert/coffee/drinks I've thought would be ideal.  That being said, from my anecdotal experience, BIN 216 is usually not very busy after shows (albeit only open to 11, I believe.)

Regardless, this may help settle my long term bet with my friend that Mitchell's should open a small scale shop in the former Dynamite location.

Playhouse Square’s ‘Beyond the Stage’ additions

By Ken Prendergast / May 19, 2025

A trio of new eateries in Downtown Cleveland’s theater district was announced today by Playhouse Square officials, along with two others already reported by NEOtrans in recent weeks. But one of the largest “Beyond The Stage” projects, redevelopment of the Greyhound bus station, is still in the works and was teased in the same announcement.

I hope they don't go with jazz club as an exclusive format for the Greyhound spot. I love jazz but it's pretty elitist and the audience isn't that big. This seems like a good opportunity for a smaller performing arts space that can host all sorts of stuff like small theater productions, singer-songwriters, etc. AND jazz.

Playhouse Square is a Theatre company, if anyone should prioritize ars gratia artis and be okay if that comes across as a little elitist and/or exclusive, catering to a small audience, it's them. People said the same thing about Playhouse Square when it started. I wouldn't mind a less purely jazz focused jazz club, but a pure jazz club dedicated to highlighting and preserving the art would fit in well with Playhouse Square's mission, and since there isn't already one downtown, I think would succeed. My main hope is that it plays some older styles of Jazz with some Dixieland, big band, swing, etc, instead of just modern solo-heavy smooth jazz.

Does the Greyhound building even have an elevator to facilitate the need for this type of jazz? ;-)

I didn't say no jazz, I said mix it up with other art forms. Playhouse Square right now hosts musicals, theater, stand-up comics, pop music (Vince Gill is performing there this year. I saw B.B. King there years ago).
Edit: I don't need to keep posting new comments on this but I'm suggesting they be inclusive of all performing arts. Take this list of genres and copy it!

In Indianapolis, they have an enviable night spot called The Cabaret which features a rotating mix of cabaret artists, Broadway actors, etc.. doing small shows "no seat further than 20 feet from stage" ...

The current season has Matthew Morrison from Glee, several Broadway leads doing solo shows, etc... it's one key thing missing from playhouse Square or, frankly, Cleveland...

As background, Indianapolis gets Broadway tours 1-2 seasons after we do here in Cleveland because people simply don't go.. but this seems to have thrived and for Cleveland to be without of any of this type seems odd, especially with a huge Broadway subscriber base to sell to for shows that would seem to cross over very well.

I sure hope the Greyhound has such a space for such shows a good booking agent to book well.

I wouldn't consider myself a "jazz fan", but I've gone to the Ginger Rabbit in Columbus Short North and found out I really enjoy live jazz. It's a great venue and the acoustics are fantastic. Hard to believe Cleveland doesn't have a jazz joint downtown or in the Flats.

I know this is outside of downtown/The Flats, but The Bop Stop is a pretty neat little venue, and it's not even a mile from downtown's edge. People tend to forget about (I do occasionally, as well!) 😀👍

But back on topic (sorry!), I would absolutely support a jazz club at Greyhound, both figuratively and literally! Hre's hoping they do something great with the space.

I like the Bop Stop as well, it's a nice intimate venue, but it's pretty small. One of the reasons I brought up earlier jazz styles such as swing or big band, is that you really need a larger room to do that kind of jazz justice. Too many horns overwhelms small rooms, like the Bop Stop, pretty easily. The greyhound building could absolutely support a big band, and there are a few local acts that play that kind of music. Also, I think a big, beautiful, centrally located venue would do a lot more to grow and support the jazz scene than what we have now, which is nice, but arguably insufficient for a city our size. Cleveland definitely has room for more jazz.

This same space was CSU's gallery until about 10 years ago, correct?
