October 2, 200816 yr Has anyone else noticed the new Playhouse Square sign on Chester and E. 16th-ish? It's bright red, but you can barely read that it says Playhouse Square. Most of the sign is taken up by "PARKING". Stupid........
October 23, 200816 yr The letter from Art J Falco (Playhouse Square CEO) to Broadway Series subscribers states, "Playhouse Square is at a pivotal period in its history. On the heels of the Idea Center opening and the announcement of a robust 2008-2009 performance schedule, Playhouse Square will also experience the renovation of the Hanna Theater, Euclid Avenue's redevelopment, and the East 14th St redesign. Combining those with exciting soon-to-be-announced projects further cements this as the time for the spotlight to be shown on Playhouse Square and its comprehensive vision." The italics above are mine. I love exciting soon-to-be announced projects. I do not know if they are development projects or theatrical projects. Anyone here have an inkling?

Haven't heard anything about that...
October 23, 200816 yr 2 ideas: * it could be in reference to plans to develop the surface lot East 17th & Euclid * it could be in reference to add condo units to the roof of the Hanna Building annex
October 23, 200816 yr I think it's DoD and Residential above the old office resource center and traveler's shoppe... I know they are real into adding a residential component to PHS. I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of announcement of the project WELL in advance of it actually being done. I'd still like to know more about the 14th street redesign.
October 23, 200816 yr I'd like them to redevelop E. 13th between Chester and Euclid. It's kinda creepy walking down that street, but that's the fastest way for me to walk to Playhouse Square.
October 23, 200816 yr Doc -- you can also cut through the Playhouse Square garage to the Bulkley Building. Although perhaps that takes you uncomfortably close to the Greyhound station?
October 23, 200816 yr Walking by the Greyhound station doesn't bother me. Is the cut-through always open, or just on around show times? And you don't have to have a ticket at all to get through there?
October 23, 200816 yr I walk past the greyhound station when i get out of class on my way to the bus stop in front of the galleria, granted im pretty much in full sprint so i dont miss the bus, but it dosnt bother me at all. I can remember about 2 years ago some dude approached me when walking past the station and asked me if i wanted to buy some weed off him, and to show me it was legit he pulled something out of his pocket looking like a 3 year old used green brillo pad, the only thing i could do is laugh at the guy and walk away
October 23, 200816 yr the corner of chester and east 13th by the allerton building always has the smell of weed and many dudes just hanging there looking to sell...i'm not sure why the CPD doesn't do some sort of sting operation there

October 24, 200816 yr The Idea Center chat has been moved here... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,17117.msg336677.html#new
October 24, 200816 yr Walking by the Greyhound station doesn't bother me. Is the cut-through always open, or just on around show times? And you don't have to have a ticket at all to get through there? The cut-through is almost always open. When the garage is closed (typically after 9pm even when there's no show), you can still get in coming north from Euclid but you have to exit at the garage end in the alley between the garage and the back of the Allen theater. Late at night when the garage is closed I don't think you can get into the garage unless you have a keycard for the garage.
October 28, 200816 yr I noticed on Euclid today that the building between United Way and the Travelers Shop no longer has a for lease sign. There is a small banner which says "financing made available by Great Lakes Financial." Is this where the Kent UDC is moving?

October 28, 200816 yr as did I... but I too noticed the for sale sign come off of that building. I know that building was one of the places to recently be awarded tax credits... perhaps they've got something DoD related going on.
October 28, 200816 yr They continue to do "stuff" at the old goodyear service center at 14th and Prospect. They dug something up from the parking lot area yesterday and they continue to gut the interior.

October 28, 200816 yr I don't but awhile back I heard a "rumor" of a very small developer looking at it on behalf of someone... Of course I've also heard before that the building structurally has some really serious issues and would need to be torn down. So basically... I guess it could be anything. :)
October 28, 200816 yr Probably digging up old gas tanks, and cleaning asbestos out of the interior of the building.
February 7, 200916 yr Question: 1) What is the scaffolding for on the east side of the BK Keith building?
February 7, 200916 yr They've slowly been restoring the storefronts of that building for quite some time. They finally turned the corner (literally).
February 9, 200916 yr Despite the scaffolding, not much actual work seems to be going on. A chunk of stone fell off the building a few years ago, leading to some repairs and maintenance. But the scaffolding has stayed. Liability insurance? Can anyone shed any light on this?
February 10, 200916 yr The answer is that everyone with the City and Theater District Devel Corp have been ignoring this issue. The scaffolding has been just sitting there for YEARS!! Work is not getting done and has not been getting done. The scaffolding is ugly!! The building owners should be given 30 days to finish the job and get that eyesore out of the sidewalk. Earth to Tom Einhouse or Art Falco or anyone in the building department or council: please get that scaffolding removed !
February 17, 200916 yr Hello everyone. I don't usually post but I found this cool video about the history and current developments going on at Playhouse Square on wkyc's website. It was really well done and is definitely worth checking out. It's nice to see a major local media outlet highlighting something positive going on in the city. Here's the link: http://www.wkyc.com/life/life_article.aspx?storyid=107500&catid=2
February 18, 200916 yr It was a great story .. I was especially impressed by the things that Playhouse Square has done in addition to just the theatres. I doubt many people know what an incubator they are for new companies. Very cool! Thanks for the post, Boffo.

Earth to Tom Einhouse or Art Falco or anyone in the building department or council: please get that scaffolding removed ! I believe there is actually work being done, albeit at the pace of a snail. They did replace all the storefront of the accapella restaurant front, and the first one heading north on 17th. This would be the slowest window restoration effort in the city however, if it weren't for the Halle building, which apparently decides to just fix up one floor of windows per year. :)
February 18, 200916 yr Does anyone know if there are any plans to clean the surface of the building. This has been like this for years. It looks like they ran out of money half way through the cleaning process. I have emailed the building owners in the past but have never gotten a response. Does anyone else notice this? It looks horrible. Finish the job.
February 18, 200916 yr ^I notice it everyday as I am walking to Starbuck's. It does look hideous. But if they have no money, they have no money.
February 18, 200916 yr I've not heard any plans, but not only does it need cleaned, the cornice is in need of restoration. A few years back they just netted it off to keep anything from falling on people. I'd have to imagine this is in some sort of long range plans.
February 18, 200916 yr It looks horrible, especially since the Idea Center building got cleaned and is now sparkling white by comparison.
February 19, 200916 yr About 3 years ago, I heard from a very strong source that Playhouse Square planned to clean the exterior of the Bulkley Building as soon as the Euclid Corridor Project was complete. That was so they could clean the exterior without worrying about new construction dust/debris getting it dirty again. We are so used to seeing it in a filthy state, that we have gotten used to it. Maybe someone can contact PlayhouseSquare District Development to ask for their plans.

March 10, 200916 yr Liggett Stashower moving from Halle Building Advertising and public relations firm Liggett Stashower has a new lease and naming rights at a building on PlayhouseSquare. The company plans to move its headquarters in July to the first three floors of a five-story building at 1240 Huron Road. March 31, 200916 yr Some work is happening in 1224 Huron. It's the smaller building on Star plaza next to the "Center for Health Affairs." Does anyone know what going on there? Also, it looks like construction stopped on the new Kent CUDC on Euclid/East 13th. The Turner construction sign is down and I haven't seen any activity there in a while.

April 7, 200916 yr The Cleveland Play House to move downtown; Cleveland Clinic may get in on the act by Tony Brown Tuesday April 07, 2009, 5:17 PM In a potential blockbuster deal for the arts, the Cleveland Play House will sell its longtime home in midtown and move downtown to PlayhouseSquare's Allen Theatre, along with Cleveland State University's drama program. The complex, multi-million dollar proposal -- which will be announced today but would not be complete until 2011 at the earliest -- will also affect a fourth major institution, the Museum of Contemporary Art, a long-term tenant at the Play House's 8500 Euclid Ave. facility. More at http://www.cleveland.com/onstage/index.ssf/2009/04/_in_a_potential_blockbuster.html
April 7, 200916 yr Wow, bombshell. I wonder what the Clinic would do with all that property... (I crack myself up).
April 7, 200916 yr Hopefully not wreck it. That building has too much grandeur, though, for them to do that (I hope?). There would be too much of a backlash. I just love how it will concentrate the theater-goers even more. I always hated that location (E.84) because, at least imo, it did nothing to create any sort of foot traffic.
April 7, 200916 yr Wow, bombshell. I wonder what the Clinic would do with all that property... (I crack myself up). Answer!
April 7, 200916 yr This is really super awesome. First, I've never liked the fact that the Cleveland Playhouse was so apart from the other theaters. A true theater district should have all major theaters, and this will just cement the district. Second, it's about damn time the Cleveland Clinic got more involved downtown . All and all, I'd say this news is as exciting as anything else I've read about recently:)
