For Star at PlayhouseSquare, it will soon be curtains: Restaurant Row

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- PlayhouseSquare will lose a popular dining spot later this month. After the final performance of "Mamma Mia" on Sunday, July 22, the curtain will also fall on Star at PlayhouseSquare.

After more than a decade of service, Star will close to make way for a new restaurant concept, but under new management, said co-owner Gary Lucarelli in a written statement.

The restaurateur added that he had previously lost leases on theater restaurant properties -- including the popular Sweetwater Cafe, a landmark at East 14th Street and Euclid Avenue, and Stages at the old Cleveland Playhouse -- and won't open another restaurant downtown."I'm done with theater [locations]," said Lucarelli. "We still have Players on Madison, [sweetwater's] Café Sausalito in the Galleria and Sweetwater Landing in the Metroparks. Besides, I'm 68 years old, and it's time to look at other parts of my life."

^ That would be awesome, and really needed. This winter the building will get even emptier when one of their tenants leaves. And apartments are really popular right now, and this would be a nice first step to revitalizing that part of Euclid Avenue.

^ More excited in the prospect of FCE investing in Cleveland.  Just rumors, but I like it.

That was basically my same comment in Downtown residencies discussion.  I find it crazy that a company based in Cleveland is just now entering the mix after everyone else has taken the risk.  Hope this comes to fruition.

Halle Building could enter downtown apartment mix

Office space on upper floors would be replaced by up to 200 rental units under nascent plan

The Halle Building in downtown Cleveland, well-known thanks to “The Drew Carey Show” and a celebrated role as the former home of Mr. Jingeling, may become apartments under a plan Forest City Enterprises Inc. is considering.

The former Halle department store at 1228 Euclid Ave. is now an office building on its upper floors with retail space on the first floor and basement, but the office use could be relegated to memory if the Cleveland-based developer pursues the idea.

Forest City is weighing converting part or most of the structure in the PlayhouseSquare neighborhood to more than 200 apartments and retaining its first floor as retail space, according to a source who declined to be identified because he is not authorized to discuss the plan.

If this goes through, I'm sure it would be worthy of its own thread..... but since its being mentioned here, I'm now wondering what consititutes "Playhouse Square"... does it have defined boundaries?  I only ask because I never thought of anything west of 13th as being part of PHS

The Wyndham considers itself in Playhouse Square.....

http://www.wyndham.com/hotels/CLEPS/main.wnt

...and so do I. :)

Halle is west of Wyndham

Halle is west of Wyndham

Considering there is a "9-12 district"-- it only makes sense anything east of 12 to be considered playhouse square. Halle is east of 12

Halle is west of Wyndham

So the west wall of the Wyndham is where Playhouse Square ends?? :-P

Can we agree that, for purposes of marketing, it makes sense to brand any apartment conversion of Halle's as a Playhouse Square property? As the article states, apartments at the Halle can benefit from the proximity of Playhouse Square's amenities.

I think it is on the cusp.  I wouldn't draw the line right at 13th, but say all the buildings surrounding that intersection/Star Plaza are also part of the PHS neighborhood.  I'm pretty sure Wyndham claims to be part of the PHS, and the Statler looking building directly south of Wyndham calls itself Playhouse Square Plaza.  So, Halle as part of PHS is kinda a gimme in my mind.  If that's the way they want to market themselves I wouldn't protest.

For sure.  I was just curious if the term Playhouse "Square" refers to any specific historically defined area.

Hasn't the CSU Theater Department relocated to E. 13? If so, it is definitely part of PHS

Look at the street signs guys. That's indisputably part of the "Theater District". Where it says something else, that's when its something else

So basically Euclid Avenue from East of East 9th Street to Euclid Avenue and East 18th Street.

More like 12th to 18th. Six of one half a dozen the other...this gets so monotonous.

Yep. So let's get back to this exciting (potential) development.

Over 200 apartments sounds amazing...along with around 500 or so within a square mile being looked at also.

On topic, yes--the more apartments the better. I hope this happens and its nice to see Forest City laying down some coin at home after such a long time!

Wow this is exciting news indeed.

the Hallle building will make amazing residence.

I just wish they would do the same to the old Halle garage across the street.

Yes!! That building is in such disrepair but converting a parking garage back to usable space as residential? Seems pretty UNLIKELY... :(

^why...4th and Plum apartments in Cincy (I am sure there are many more) which was converted more than 25 years ago.

The same discussion occurred recently with the May Company building when they discussed putting parking in.  Apparently, it's not that difficult to transition back.  I would say if anything this building would be easier since it's already gutted.

I guess I just meant more the willingness to convert, not the physical ability.  Cleveland seems to have an obsession with parking lots and parking garages so Id be surprised to see one given up for residential.  Thrilled!!!! but surprised  :-D

Anyone know why thousands of young ladies converged on Playhouse Square last night? Was it because Musky was in the area??

Two words. Nicki Minaj.

Nicki Minaj concert.

According to my sources at grindr, there were also a fair number of gays involved in that madness.

I heard something today about star not being the only restaurant being closed. I can't remember specifically but supposedly several others in that building are being let go. Sorry to start rumors; I was just wondering if anyone knew more

^I wasn't aware that there were "several" restaurants in the same building where Star was located.

Never heard of her. Sigh. I'm getting old.

Alright. My coworker knows the owner of acapella and the story is that star, as we know already, but also Acapella, Otto moser, and m oko have all been asked to be closed by I believe Monday.

Very strange that China Sea is not listed in there yet it's between Star and Otto Moser.  Please don't get rid of my Chinese spot!!! haha.

At least in the case of this rumor we only have to wait a few days to know if there's anything to it.  If it's at all true, there must be a serious backstory.  Landlords can't typically just tell tenants to leave (there's that whole lease thing, or at least notice, if it's month to month).

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I believe that was also one of the restaurant being closed. It was pretty much everything in that location. My coworker with heading over there after work to talk to her friend, so either way I will know more on Monday!

Noooooo haha....he has another location in Warehouse district but it's not as good or close.  If there is validity to this, it has to be something big.

They finally are getting around to demolishing the building like they planned back in the day. See, there is parking issues with the theaters, so they plan on demolishing the theaters for parking lots to help the parking problem. Its just logic ;)

And it will make certain CSU kids stop complaining about the loss of their parking lot, with a brand new one right next to campus!

:P

Omg don't even joke about that... Haha. I'm very hesitant to post things based on rumors,  but it seemed like a direct enough connection to be valid. My coworker Attempted to contact some of her previous coworkers some of which are higher ups at Playhouse Square but she was unable to get a response. According to her,  this all came about very suddenly and apparently quite shockingly at least to the owner of a cappella

We went out to eat at Cowell @ Hubbard last night and, FWIW, I asked about this and nobody kneww anything about this.

Not that they should or would. But, oh well, Monday will be soon upon us...

UDPATE:  Otto Moser is not closing, their lease is still effective.  The others however, are.  There doesnt seem to be anyone who knows what PHS's motivation is behind this change, but the Chinese restaurant and Acapella are thinking of posibly moving to 14th St. to build out space there.

There are plenty of vacant retail spaces in Hanna Annex on E 14th and on Prospect.

^^Yeah, I doubt any of us really believed that Otto Moser was closing.  From the announcement of Star's closing, we got the sense PHS Inc. had a new restaurant concept in mind for that space...  I wonder if they have something up their sleeve for all three of the soon-to-be vacated spaces?

PHS seems to have it together when it comes to development.  They have a plan and they execute it. They announced a couple years ago wanting to do 55 floors of residential in the surrounding area and that is starting to happen now that money is loosening up. The closure still hasn't been announced officialy, so I'm sure once that happens we will find out what the plan is.

55 floors?! That's tall I would love to see that! (doubtful though)

I don't think they mean a 55 story building, per se.  More a measurement of the demand they think exists.  The problem is that it is a pretty ridiculous measure.  Fifty Five floors?  But how many units per floor?  Four?  Twenty?

I'm sure they are referencing specifically 55 existing floors they feel could be targeted for conversion from what they are currently

Exactly, sorry to bring some excitement haha.  For example, the Hanna Annex conversion will probably be around 7 of those 55 with the Halle Building (if that works out) around the same.

Ah I see....excitement gone now :(
