It is still exciting. That's hundreds of new residents in a neighborhood trying to diversify its options and will more than likely lead to spin off development in the immediate area.

^Exactly...if you're not excited about the "possibility" of that much residential space in just Playhouse Square alone I don't know what can do it for you.

Sammy's restaurant returns, coming to Cleveland's PlayhouseSquare this fall: Restaurant Row

Visitors and workers dining in Cleveland's PlayhouseSquare district have lost a place to eat -- but they're about to become reacquainted with a name long familiar to local diners. Meanwhile, Art Falco, president and chief executive of PlayhouseSquare Foundation, confirmed that the former Star restaurant will become Sammy's At PlayhouseSquare.

"This is Sammy's coming back downtown," says Denise Marie Fugo, co-owner of the catering company that bears that iconic name. To that end, starting in August the space will get an architectural redo, creating an entrance right off of Euclid Avenue while replacing the restaurant's back wall with an expanse of windows looking out onto the Ohio Theatre. The facelift should more effectively beckon guests entering from either the street or PlayhouseSquare's adjoining parking garage.

The remodeled 200-seat restaurant and 20-seat bar (repositioned to the center of the dining room) is expected to open in early October, in time for the premiere of the 2012-2013 season. Fugo says that the new restaurant will employ between 35 to 50 employees, including a yet to be announced new chef de cuisine.

K&D Group closes Hanna Building Annex deal, will start construction on PlayhouseSquare apartments

By Michelle Jarboe McFee, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Construction will start within weeks on 102 apartments in an empty PlayhouseSquare office building, now that a complex real estate deal has closed.

http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2012/09/kd_group_closes_hanna_building.html

Perfect.  Hopefully, this helps fill up those empty storefronts directly south on Euclid.  Maybe paving the way for a Trader Joe's!  8-)

That's good to hear. With momentum building in the theater district, I expect spill over between it and east fourth down euclid and prospect.

Good job k&d. Now get moving on the east ohio building. :)

Do you mean Huron and/or Prospect?

Oh sorry!  I guess I was in the zone walking over there the other day and didn't pay attention to how far I was walking.  I meant the storefronts between Statler and East 9th down Euclid.

In an interview this week, George said the George Group and an unidentified developer might turn the small building into 12 high-end apartments over ground-floor retail."

More evidence of progress on this project. From Planning Commission....

New Cleveland State University gallery kicks off 1st season with faculty show, but the star is the space itself

Published: Wednesday, September 19, 2012, 3:00 PM

By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland State University has kicked off the first fall season at its beautiful new art gallery on Euclid Avenue with exhibitions on works by faculty and black-and-white photographs of Cleveland by veteran Cleveland architectural photographer Jennie Jones.

The shows, on view through Saturday, Oct. 20, are pretty good, but the real news here is the gallery itself – and its potential.

Located in a portion of the restored Cowell & Hubbard Building at 1307 Euclid Ave., the gallery sits next to chef Zachary Bruell’s new restaurant, which also bears the name of the building.

What will be the parking lot across the street

DSCF6283.jpg

Nice pics!  Can't wait to see what retailers they bring into the storefronts.

I thought K&D was going to install green space across the street.  Would the city let them install parking?

On another note, it would be great to see the Jewish Federation finally sell their properties to a developer.  These could be strong connectors between CSU and PHS.

It's both.

EDIT: glad to see them moving forward so quickly on this project.

This is really the Nine-Twelve District, but at 12th & Chester it's also at the edge of the Theater District.

Conversion of the Chester Commons Bldg into 36 or so apartments, and retail, is moving along

I wonder if they're going to remove the cheap faux historic storefront system and replace it with something better.

I hope not. I like it.

Are there any 'before' pictures of the ground floor ?

Fencing has gone up and construction's about to begin on the parking lot/green space at 14th & Prospect

Things seem to be really moving fast on this one. Seems like they're on a timetable to get East Ohio Bldg (1717 E. 9th) started -- like this Spring.

I'm hoping that this area doesn't stay parking for the long term.  Prospect can support more than just surface parking lots- especially with Playhouse Square across the street.

^Don't count on it...if I recall correctly they had to get a waiver from the city to turn this into parking (specifically for the apartments) and they are not going to give it up since it is a selling point for the tenants (although I don't know how big of one since it is surface parking (think winter) and not adjacent to the building (think groceries).

Don't the tenants already have a attached garage?

There is a parking deck on Prospect Ave between Hanna Annex and E. 17th, I guess they could pay by the month and use it as their garage -- if that's an option.

...at 17th & Euclid, some neew signage

Popular east-side pub coming to Playhouse:

"Synnott's next expansion will be a tad more ambitious: In March, Parnell's Downtown will open in PlayhouseSquare, in a space that has seen its share of short-lived operations. Most recently, it was home to Corks Wine Bar, which lasted a little less than three years."

Holy crap!  As a long time Parnell's patron, this is exciting to soon have one up the street!

I definitely dig Parnell's as well!  Time to party in the theater district.

Lol, well, I'm kind of a D-list celeb nowadays....  Been spending too much time working in Akron!  Hopefully by the time they open I'll be able to drink again :).

I'll definitely be curious to see how different the feel of the place is from the CH location.

a great video on the history of playhouse square..

This story of the rebirth of what is now PlayhouseSquare in downtown Cleveland is a rags-to-riches tale as dramatic as any on Broadway.

PlayhouseSquare to get new restaurant called Rothschild Farms

Things aren't quiet for long at PlayhouseSquare. While finishing touches are being made to the Cibreo Italian Kitchen, set to open in the former Bricco space during early September, restaurateur Scott Kuhn announces that he's raising the curtain on a second spot in the theater district.

...

The 200-seat Cibreo will be located at 1438 Euclid Ave. The new restaurant, Rothschild Farms, will be set at 2033 East 14th Street, in the Hanna Building. By occupying both spaces, Kuhn's Driftwood Restaurants and Catering group will effectively sandwich in the 14th Street Theatre, which will become a 250-seat private dining and event center called Cibreo Privato.

With all of these restaurant changes does anyone know whats going on with the potential Hofbrauhaus?  There was mention of it on the planning comission agenda a couple weeks ago and then nothing seemed to have come out of it...?

A new churrascaria (like Brasa) is supposed to open in CLE this year. Looks like a chain called "Texas de Brazil". Anyone know where its supposed to be?

When posting twitter post, please post a link so people can read the entire convo.  thanks.

Per the design review or CPC hearing agenda posted a month or so ago, wasn't the location the newer mock-tuduor building right on Chester?  I just assumed Joe was being a little sloppy, not that he was announcing a different location.

Pugu - Texas de Brazil - the bigger of the two national Brazilian steakhouse chains (other is Fogo de Chao) will be opening at Crocker Park in (now.. updated) 2014 - not in PHS.

eyehrtfood---thanks. though I'm not a fan of chains, I like this type of food, and if not Downtown, I am happy that its going west, not beachwood!

Usually these places are in CBDs as they get a lot of corporate business.  However, we have Brasa in place downtown and it's an original.

Are they expecting everyone to park in the Playhouse Square garage?  That's the only adjacent parking.  There is a small lot across Chester, but Chester is too wide for pedestrians to cross easily.  How many will walk down to the crosswalk at 17th?

I hope to see additional plans for this area soon (between the 13th and 17th from Chester north to Payne).  Other than the Greyhound station, there isn't a ton of activity, mostly a sea of parking lots.
