Cleveland's failed bicentennial bridge lighting project doesn't bode well for PlayhouseSquare's giant chandelier: Mark Naymik

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland's bright ideas always seem to dim.

 

PlayhouseSquare's plan to hang a giant crystal chandelier above Euclid Avenue in the theater district got me thinking about a couple other projects that were supposed to be something iconic and withstand the test of time.

It does bring up a point on how badly the city fails at projects like these, but this is Playhouse Square's project, and I do not believe they will let it die. If the city was running this then he has a point, but they aren't, so the connection is not valid.

 

Maintenance is not something Id give Cleveland or RTA an A+ on.

They've already poured the concrete bases for the support arches and started wiring work. There's no way they're going to turn back now.

Please as a newbie, and I have done some research, can you give examples of something similar to the 20' chandelier that the city has failed with that you mention in your post? I can imagine most cities have projects that haven't been maintained but just curious if there area any that can be compared although it's obvious that this is not a city sponsored project.

That said...a bridge lighting plan from 1996 that has somewhat faded is not "failed". It happened in 1996 as the flats bars were fading , it was cool at the time but was there a guarantee that it would be lighted forever? Times change, weather happens, and it is almost 20 years later. It was done at one point, and maybe it can be done again (better). Same goes with the Playhouse Chandelier...it might be a blip or a it might be there 100 years from now. Cities change...trying new things should not be considered a failure. It should be a learning experience, which I applaud hometown GE lighting for trying something that may be the best thing ever, or it may fail. I have faith that GE Lighting is not betting it's rep on failure. And maybe in the process they will learn from it and find a better way to re-light the bridges that will withstand the elements....and make their hometown a spectacle of what they can achieve.

The US Bank parking garage @ playhouse square got some new signage.

Last nite the steel was being hoisted onto the tops of the CowellHubbard bldg and the old Woolworths, ostensibly for the large Playhouse Square signage yet to come.

And the banner-type blade signs were removed above the State and Ohio marquees

I was wondering why something seemed missing on my walk home. Glad to see more progress on the project.

I just drove by the Hofbräuhaus site and noticed that there was a construction gate at the driveway, a couple of construction tractors, and a garbage trailer already filled up.  I think this is the start of the development activity on the site for the Hofbräuhaus.

 

Also, there were a couple of cherry pickers in front of the theaters tonight.  I couldn't really tell what they were doing but they where above the theater awnings.

Construction has really started ramping up for all of these improvements. They've been removing bricks and building bridges for pedestrians to use while the sidewalks are all torn up where they're installing new signage. I'll see if I can get some shots on my way to work tomorrow morning.

Well, that explains why the westbound HealthLine was detouring around Playhouse Square yesterday!

 

As promised, here are some crappy cell phone pics from my snowy walk in this morning showing some of the areas where they've torn up the brick to start installing the wiring for the arches and the video boards.

I wish the patina of the canopy for the Allen Theatre was cleaned up to match the new sign color above.  The 2 appear disjointed.  Btw thanks for all the photo updates.

We were out walking the other night and the paper was off the newly cut door at the former "A Cafe" (windows are still papered)

Looked in through the door and a man was coming down from ladder. So I got his attention

Could barely made out what he was saying but it will be a restaurant. He wouldnt divulge the name but did say that it will be a place to "nourish yourself" with farm sourced and local ingredients (paraphrasing)...not necessarily organic/raw (I was thinking of a new place for Anna In The Raw -  currently upstairs on E. 9th -- but, no, not that).

I just hope it wont be a breakfast-and-lunch only place

I also really like the street lamps. They look just like the ones in downtown Chicago. Wish they never got rid of them (as with so many other things on Euclid Ave...)

Or just skip the clichéd "gateway" concept altogether.  By far my least favorite part of the plan. 

Its definitely cliche. However, for visitors to Cleveland it should definitely draw them in to explore which is the whole point.  It'll be fine.

This is just like buy a house or seeing a house during renovation or construction.  You really should wait to see the FINISHED product before making judgement. ;) ;)
