January 17, 201411 yr If there were a few Asian carp in the lake to eat all the midges....... No but it's cool to have the LARGEST outdoor chandelier.
January 17, 201411 yr You forgot the midges! With all the lights, those things will be all over it like it's a Yankees' pitcher! I thought midges were mayflies? I like the idea of the chandelier also serving as a bug zapper. Serious question -- how will the chandelier not attract midges/mayflies?? We saw how they love the lights at Jacobs/Progressive Field! January 18, 201411 yr Oye, this guy is such a drag... Cleveland's failed bicentennial bridge lighting project doesn't bode well for PlayhouseSquare's giant chandelier: Mark Naymik CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland's bright ideas always seem to dim. PlayhouseSquare's plan to hang a giant crystal chandelier above Euclid Avenue in the theater district got me thinking about a couple other projects that were supposed to be something iconic and withstand the test of time.
January 18, 201411 yr It does bring up a point on how badly the city fails at projects like these, but this is Playhouse Square's project, and I do not believe they will let it die. If the city was running this then he has a point, but they aren't, so the connection is not valid. Maintenance is not something Id give Cleveland or RTA an A+ on.

They've already poured the concrete bases for the support arches and started wiring work. There's no way they're going to turn back now.

Please as a newbie, and I have done some research, can you give examples of something similar to the 20' chandelier that the city has failed with that you mention in your post? I can imagine most cities have projects that haven't been maintained but just curious if there area any that can be compared although it's obvious that this is not a city sponsored project.

He does have a point. You forgot to add the link http://www.cleveland.com/naymik/index.ssf/2014/01/clevelands_failed_bicentennial.html That said...a bridge lighting plan from 1996 that has somewhat faded is not "failed". It happened in 1996 as the flats bars were fading , it was cool at the time but was there a guarantee that it would be lighted forever? Times change, weather happens, and it is almost 20 years later. It was done at one point, and maybe it can be done again (better). Same goes with the Playhouse Chandelier...it might be a blip or a it might be there 100 years from now. Cities change...trying new things should not be considered a failure. It should be a learning experience, which I applaud hometown GE lighting for trying something that may be the best thing ever, or it may fail. I have faith that GE Lighting is not betting it's rep on failure. And maybe in the process they will learn from it and find a better way to re-light the bridges that will withstand the elements....and make their hometown a spectacle of what they can achieve.
January 19, 201411 yr Alright, this thread is not about the maintenance of public art projects, please remember that before you post. If someone wants to discuss that, they're welcome to create a new thread. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
January 22, 201411 yr The US Bank parking garage @ playhouse square got some new signage. Sorry for the first pic's quality, I snapped it with my phone's zoom while walking home from work.
January 22, 201411 yr That sign has been there for a while no? Maybe they just replaced the lights? I live across the street. Looking at the street view they had a similar one at one point, but I know it's been down at least since Summer. This new one was installed yesterday.
February 5, 201411 yr Last nite the steel was being hoisted onto the tops of the CowellHubbard bldg and the old Woolworths, ostensibly for the large Playhouse Square signage yet to come. And the banner-type blade signs were removed above the State and Ohio marquees

Only two weeks after installation and the lighting on one side of the new parking sign is no longer working.

February 19, 201411 yr I just drove by the Hofbräuhaus site and noticed that there was a construction gate at the driveway, a couple of construction tractors, and a garbage trailer already filled up. I think this is the start of the development activity on the site for the Hofbräuhaus. Also, there were a couple of cherry pickers in front of the theaters tonight. I couldn't really tell what they were doing but they where above the theater awnings.

Looked like they were doing some cleanup from when they removed the signs.
February 21, 201411 yr Bin216 to replace former Sammy's at PlayhouseSquare in downtown Cleveland Bin216, a casual wine bar-style lounge featuring small plate dining and a variety of seating areas, is undergoing refurbishment and is expected to open in May. PlayhouseSquare Association will also remodel and expand the RJF President's Club, a restaurant and lounge open to Donors Circle members, in the theater complex. Both facilities will be operated by Driftwood Restaurants Group, which runs other PlayhouseSquare eateries: Cibreo Italian Kitchen, Cibreo Privado events center, and Rothschild Farms restaurant. http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2014/02/bin216_to_replace_former_sammy.html#incart_river_default On a somewhat related note - does anyone know what is going in the old "A Cafe" spot in the US Bank building? I saw they cut a new door on the eastern side of the space, the windows are papered over and there was some activity around the area. I overheard the barista at Starbucks saying no one knows what is going to occupy the space but she hopes it will be a Walgreens.

February 23, 201411 yr http://www.wkyc.com/picture-gallery/news/features/2014/02/19/photos--playhousesquare-chandelier/5606811/ The first photos of the chandelier under construction in Canada
February 26, 201411 yr Construction has really started ramping up for all of these improvements. They've been removing bricks and building bridges for pedestrians to use while the sidewalks are all torn up where they're installing new signage. I'll see if I can get some shots on my way to work tomorrow morning.
February 26, 201411 yr Well, that explains why the westbound HealthLine was detouring around Playhouse Square yesterday! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 27, 201411 yr As promised, here are some crappy cell phone pics from my snowy walk in this morning showing some of the areas where they've torn up the brick to start installing the wiring for the arches and the video boards.
February 27, 201411 yr I wish the patina of the canopy for the Allen Theatre was cleaned up to match the new sign color above. The 2 appear disjointed. Btw thanks for all the photo updates.
February 28, 201411 yr ^I dont think that can be changed. THanks winterton for the pics. RE the last picture above. We were out walking the other night and the paper was off the newly cut door at the former "A Cafe" (windows are still papered) Looked in through the door and a man was coming down from ladder. So I got his attention Could barely made out what he was saying but it will be a restaurant. He wouldnt divulge the name but did say that it will be a place to "nourish yourself" with farm sourced and local ingredients (paraphrasing)...not necessarily organic/raw (I was thinking of a new place for Anna In The Raw - currently upstairs on E. 9th -- but, no, not that). I just hope it wont be a breakfast-and-lunch only place
February 28, 201411 yr Here's another one taken where the big video pillar will be going in. Bonus shot that I posted on IG, just because I think playhouse square is perdy. I can't wait to see how bright the square is after the video boards are all in!
February 28, 201411 yr ^ great pics. I really dig the colors that are starting to emerge in the district. It's a refreshing aesthetic update.
February 28, 201411 yr Awesome pics. But I still hate seeing that building (can't remember its name) with the cloth-material draped over the top of it. When are they ever going to remove it?
February 28, 201411 yr Let's get the giant neon rooftop signage back on the Keith Building and we've got something...

March 1, 201411 yr ^ Where did you dig up that RKO picture? I really like those old street lights A really cool thing called Google. ;) "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
March 1, 201411 yr ^ Where did you dig up that RKO picture? I really like those old street lights I also really like the street lamps. They look just like the ones in downtown Chicago. Wish they never got rid of them (as with so many other things on Euclid Ave...)
March 4, 201411 yr Archway going up at Huron & Prospect. Wow, they look even bigger than I thought they would be!
March 4, 201411 yr Wow. And I understand the barrier around the archway -- to keep pedestrians out of a dangerous construction site. But it's almost like it was put there to keep it from being stolen! :-D "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

March 4, 201411 yr Wow after seeing the actual gateway, not in favor of such a massive and bulky monstrosity crossing the street. They should have just put a larger vertical sign on the pillers on each street side. Similar in concept to the light pillars at CSU. https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/

By far my least favorite part of the plan.
March 4, 201411 yr Its definitely cliche. However, for visitors to Cleveland it should definitely draw them in to explore which is the whole point. It'll be fine.
