March 19, 201411 yr Another view from @freshwatercle A friend visiting from Chicago saw those human cutouts and said to me "Are those the only pedestrians you can get to come to downtown?" I told him "No, they were once Chicagoans who dared to criticize our city." "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
March 19, 201411 yr For that area, those actually might be the only "pedestrians"! Terrible intersection.
March 19, 201411 yr ^^You should have told him at least they are not outlined in chalk like they are in Chitown.
March 19, 201411 yr Another view from @freshwatercle Good lord, are those cut-out people a permanent installation? Please say no.
March 19, 201411 yr Another view from @freshwatercle I can see my house from there! ;) Another view from @freshwatercle Good lord, are those cut-out people a permanent installation? Please say no. Yeah, they surround the pedestrian entrance to the gated Hanna lot. They don't look as bad from the other side. I grabbed more shots of the retro sign. I'm still a bit in the fence on it. I like the height it adds to the building, but something about the color of the letters look off to me. Also thought the LCD marquee signs looked better today. Finally, a shot of the material they're using to cover the concrete bases for the arches.
March 19, 201411 yr PlayhouseSquare posted a video with some details about the chandelier on their youtube channel:
March 19, 201411 yr Thanks again to Winterton, Clueless, Paul and everyone else who has been posting photo updates of this project. Love it or hate it, it's quite a change and certain awesome to be able to see it unfold on screen like this!

Love it or hate it, it's quite a change and certain awesome to be able to see it unfold on screen like this! And here I was just about to apologize for posting so many pictures! Here's a new addition. I got a terrible blurrycam shot of a flatbed bringing in some more letters for the sign. I also noticed that there's someone experimenting with a red light under the awnings for District.
March 19, 201411 yr Kudos to all involved in this extraordinary effort and design. The photographic journal is perfection.
March 19, 201411 yr I know this is random, but I love the Q in that font. Makes the sign for me. Although I think I pictured the lettering bigger overall. Maybe it will appear bigger at night when all illuminated.

Ive felt that same sentiment for a few years now but i keep doing it
March 26, 201411 yr Euclid arch. I'm so mad that I actually like these things. I was one of them calling the arches tacky when the first renderings came out. :-o
March 26, 201411 yr Euclid arch. I'm so mad that I actually like these things. I was one of them calling the arches tacky when the first renderings came out. :-o It helps that they're actually better looking than the renderings when you see them in person.
March 26, 201411 yr "It helps that they're actually better looking than the renderings when you see them in person." We don't often hear that on UO lol
March 26, 201411 yr ^too true. I think it's because the renderings were night shots and the arches look nice in daylight. I'm really looking forward to the chandalier now.
March 28, 201411 yr yeah it is impressive. i dk if i like them on euclid or not, its too cheesy columbusy, but its ok on the side streets. i'm holding out for the giant chandelier. Exactly how I feel. The ones on Euclid are not only cheesy, but they interfere with the awesome vista down the avenue.
March 28, 201411 yr I like them. I do too. I have a feeling that people who are either walking or driving on Euclid are going to see these, the chandelier, and other numerous lights from afar and be drawn to it to check everything out. This area has the potential to be a major catalyst for development. Really need to focus now on bringing more retail to Euclid and Huron.
March 30, 201411 yr That view looks less urban that I recall from my last trip up there. Did a building get torn down recently?
March 30, 201411 yr No but that's looking east away from the city which is far less urban than if you turned around and faced west. I like all these improvements that are happening. Every time I was in Playhouse Square I always wanted something to add some more vibrancy to the area. It felt very safe for being a performing arts district. I'm really loving the huge retro sign on top of the buildings and can't wait for the chandelier.
March 30, 201411 yr Anecdote alert: the consensus at our small gathering at a table at Parnell's the other night was thumbs-up to everything thus far
March 30, 201411 yr This may not be a popular opinion on this thread, but IMO all the Playhouse Square signage is a bit overkill. I like the arches on their own, but with all the other signs, banners, and video boards all screaming Playhouse Square it's a bit much.

I like the arches on their own, but with all the other signs, banners, and video boards all screaming Playhouse Square it's a bit much. The video boards will eventually be showing graphics for shows that are current/upcoming for their specific theater. So at least those won't always have the branding.

I'm really loving the huge retro sign on top of the buildings and can't wait for the chandelier. Right. I was in a hurry this morning so I didn't have time to walk down and get a shot from the perspective of someone entering the district. If nobody beats me to it, I'll be sure to do it when I go to chorus rehearsal on Monday to get a more urban-looking view. Also, IIRC there's a new 8 floor apartment building going in to the right of the arch sometime soon. Not the tallest, but should make some impact on the view in this direction. As a bonus, I did take this instagramized shot of the other Euclid arch with the Halle building in the background. I've always loved the Halle buildings facade and IMHO it goes well with the design of the arch.

March 30, 201411 yr I believe he's referring to the student housing project displacing the Jewish Federation and Playhouse Square buildings.

April 1, 201411 yr Let me say that I LOVE the color orange, but I found it an odd choice for the sides of these letters. I think red would have looked so much better here …
April 1, 201411 yr ^based on your picture only, it kind of looks like the same gold color as the arches. Is it the same, or an obviously different color?
April 1, 201411 yr I love the color but signage much? Cowell and Hubbard, KSU, Dwellworks, RTA...can't wait to see the night pic!!!!!
April 1, 201411 yr Looks like the frame for the stylon went up today. Not sure if I'm a fan of that shade of green. We'll see how it looks with the video boards in I guess. Also, a couple pics of the east Euclid arch.
April 1, 201411 yr Thanks everyone for the updates - it looks like a lot is going on so it's nice to see the images. For those who feel the need to slam another city with your commentary, this really isn't the place. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
April 1, 201411 yr ^based on your picture only, it kind of looks like the same gold color as the arches. Is it the same, or an obviously different color? No, it looked like a fairly bright orange to me. I remember being quite surprised when I saw it. Also, we walked around after dark and the sign was not yet lit. Maybe they're saving that for the big unveil on May 2?
April 1, 201411 yr Sorry for bombarding everyone with photos. I took a couple more this morning as the chandelier is now on site and being assembled. Couldn't get a good peek because I was in a hurry to make a meeting, but you can sort of see it if you look closely. ^based on your picture only, it kind of looks like the same gold color as the arches. Either way, they've been testing the lights for one night only after they finish, then leaving them off until May 2nd. So we won't see any of the arches/signs fully lit and operational until the unveil.

April 2, 201411 yr Oh man, I can't wait to see the shots down Euclid with the chandelier glowing in the distance.
April 2, 201411 yr From Today's NY Times - Cleveland’s Thriving Theater District Makes Downtown Living Alluring http://nyti.ms/QDHjCj "Residents of Midtown Manhattan are accustomed to walking to the Theater District to see what’s new on Broadway. But Mr. Hawley’s trip to and from Cleveland’s gilded Palace Theater was something much more significant. It was a sign, decades in the making, that this city’s efforts to create a thriving residential real estate market in its downtown core was starting to look more like a box-office hit than a flop."
