Excited for that! Hopefully it's good. Downtown doesn't have much in the way of Mexican other than Zocalo (no thanks- too many bad experiences) and now Nuevo (still working out the kinks). It'll be nice to get some variety in PHS

It is fun to see the original "STARR" letters appear as the building was home to Starr Pianos

I was just wondering if there was any progress since then. I haven't been in PHS for a while.

^ Last I saw, there has been more progress. I'm planning on going to PHS later today so I'll snap some pics.

Guys... I think, I THINK something exciting is about to happen. Noticed scaffolding up over the sidewalk under the Bulkley Building tonight and evidence of some rigging up top. Could this be at long last the restoration of the cornice?!

^ Good god, I hope so. When is the last time that cornice has seen the light of day?

My dream is that some day I will click on this thread and somebody tells me that the "something exciting about to happen" on Playhouse Square involves construction equipment on that damn parking lot next to the Hanna Building.

^i agree with you there. Hope I didn't disappoint you too badly... lol I know it's a small thing but we've been talking about that stupid cornice being covered up for as long as I've been on this thread like nine years ago! Baby steps

I snapped a photo while some of the netting is down... it does not look like they're working on the cornice though (at least not yet).

They have scaffolding on the building that is on the other side of the Idea Center, too.

Perhaps this is in response to the legislation put into place requiring façade inspections on some sort of regular basis?

looks more like a  bona fide restoration w large pieces removed from the  cornice

^yes it'd be nice to have the (?)limestone ground flor facade back on the bldg. to the left (MCMV, i.e.,1905), the lime stone appears to be just bricked-over and would easy to remove.

Had lunch at Otto Moser's yesterday with a former Cleveland city planning director. The subject of the vacant lot across the street came up. My lunch partner said the apartment tower planned for that site is still very much alive. It's an out-of-town developer and student housing is definitely NOT part of their market as this will be a high-rent building, he says. I pressed him for the name of the developer but he refused to share it.

Were there ever any envisioned specs provided for this project?

^I assume you mean design imagery, no, there hasn't yet.

The only things I've heard is that the developer was looking at a 30-story building, according to Cresco real estate. SOURCE: http://www.crescorealestate.com/latest-news/rejuvenated-downtown-cleveland-drawing-more-residents-businesses/

$4 million was requested from the state to help fund the parking deck but only $1 million was provided. SOURCE: http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2016/04/capital_bill_allocates_31_mill.html

^Good eye!

I was looking at the webcam for the Edge at CSU , and noticed there is a boring truck in the parking lot on the corner of Euclid and E 17th... https://app.oxblue.com/open/clayco/edgecsu

It has been there off and on several times over the past 18 months.  Makes me wonder whether they got some unusual test results and had to come back for most testing, or are they drilling deeper this time?

^Doubt they (Soil reports) are any different then what they were in Summer '15. The soils there are Sandy and any high rise would need geopiers or other deep foundations.

  • 3 weeks later...

Disappointed to hear it would be more student housing. I guess that's a need, but I would like to see another new development happen that could benefit more people than just students.

^ Are you referring to the potential tower that would be on Euclid & E. 17th? Where did you hear that it would be student housing? That just doesn't seem right.

Or are you referring to the Edge?

^I have the same question.  In everything I have read about the "proposed" Playhouse Square residential building I don't recall anything about student housing.

Has there been information posted about this "proposed" residential development?  I have either missed it or since forgotten it.

KJP...if you are correct about the Playhouse Square building I am going to hunt you down and plant a big wet one on you, so be forewarned.  This is the project I have been wanting for years.

Thanks but I didn't have anything to do with the tower, if it gets built. I'm just reporting news. :)

KJP.....this is fantastic!!!  Especially the Playhouse square tower.  I'm willing to give up parking in my favorite lot for this!!  I never understood why they built that garage on the back to begin with!

Something else that's interesting.... Someone just pointed out to me that all of the properties totaling 0.8-acre west of the Chester Avenue parking garage to East 13th were acquired by Playhouse Square Foundation from Ideal Parking last October. Probably no one in the media noticed it at the time because the properties were acquired via a quit-claim deed. Dollar amounts get noticed most. Presumably this acquisition is for a potential development. And if a parking garage is built on Euclid at 17th (below a residential tower), some/all spaces at the Chester garage could then be devoted to supporting development on Chester. Pretty strategic thinking by these guys.

Thats interesting....Any idea as to what type of development?

Probably just a coincidence, but the Brownell Court alleyway at the back of the lot was marked up the other day for what seems like sewer work.

My hovercraft is full of eels

Thats interesting....Any idea as to what type of development?

No idea. There were conceptual renderings for the parking lots across Chester done several years ago that showed residential above retail wrapped around a mid-block parking deck. Anyone remember who developed the conceptual renderings? Was that by the city?

Playhouse Square receives $10 million gift from KeyBank, adds name to State Theatre

Updated on June 17, 2017 at 9:00 PMPosted on June 17, 2017 at 9:00 PM

BY LAURA DEMARCO, THE PLAIN DEALER [email protected]

CLEVELAND, OH - Playhouse Square has received one of the largest gifts in its history.

KeyBank, a longtime supporter of Playhouse Square, announced a $10 million gift to the performing arts center's Advancing the Legacy Campaign on Saturday night.

"We are pleased and proud to be able make this gift to help support the arts and education and the thriving and continuing renaissance of downtown Cleveland," said Beth Mooney, chairman and CEO of KeyCorp.

It is only the second such gift in Playhouse Square's history, following a $10 million gift from the Richard J. Fasenmyer Foundation in December 2014.

While I realize that the Key Bank gift is intended for several purposes, one of them is for capital improvements. I'm hopeful this is for new construction, and could be used to build off of their aggressive approach to attract new residents to the district.

Also (on a totally speculative and hopefully related front!), does anyone happen to know how tall of a building the Cowell & Hubbard structure can accommodate on top of it? I recall that this building was constructed in a way to add a tower to it at some point in the future. Having a building already in place as the foundation should reduce some of the costs of building a tower. It would be astounding if the Key Bank donation was used to aid this purpose!
