I was told that the building that Dwellworks occupies was also built to support future vertical expansion. It's only hearsay but I was told 5-10 additional floors could be added. The steel columns in there looked as big if not bigger than ones I've seen in ground levels of 10 story buildings.

Also (on a totally speculative and hopefully related front!), does anyone happen to know how tall of a building the Cowell & Hubbard structure can accommodate on top of it? I recall that this building was constructed in a way to add a tower to it at some point in the future.

My recollection of a PD article from probably decades ago is 20 stories.

the bldg was built in 1920 (and remained in business as a jewelry store until 1981) and it can accomodate more floors per the former owner, but how many was unspecified in the article i found following the sale.

the previous owner would probably know more about that:

Jack Herrick, president of Realty Investors Co. of Cleveland, which owned the Cowell & Hubbard building.

Adding 20 stories of residential to the top of this building should cost about $50 million to $60 million (based on 515 Euclid). How much equity would a lender require to finance this? Wonder if KeyBank could give them favorable terms?? :P

Is there actually something into this Cowell & Building Talk OR is it just WISHFUL thinking.

I also would like to see another tower on Euclid ave

Big time wishful thinking. But after what PHS just announced at Euclid and East 17th, I'm actually surprised they didn't take a smaller first bite with the Cowell & Hubbard building.

BTW, apparently the Sterling Building on the other side of East 13th Street from Cowell & Hubbard could handle a building addition above it too. This article from a decade ago discusses a plan to add 12 stories on top of the Sterling Building....

Great blog by a Scranton, PA historian who worked for Playhouse Square at the beginning of the district's revival in the early 1970s. He just took a tour of the theaters last month and shared his thoughts and memories....

Corbo's Bakery opening a cafe in Cleveland's Playhouse Square this December

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Corbo's Bakery, the family-owned sweets shop best known for its cassata cakes and cannoli, has announced plans for its first bakery and cafe in Downtown Cleveland, at Playhouse Square around Dec. 1.

Corbo's Downtown Cleveland will open at 1603 Euclid Ave., in a long-vacant storefront right next to the Connor Palace, where A Cappella gift shop used to be.

Selena Corbo, president of Corbo's and wife of third-generation baker Joe Corbo, said the family has always wanted to expand the number of outlets that carry its baked goods, but learned of this opportunity only recently.

Take a tour of Cleveland's new Crowne Plaza at Playhouse Square, formerly the Wyndham (photos)

Some of the biggest changes are happening in the city's theater district, where the former Wyndham Cleveland at Playhouse Square became a Crowne Plaza last fall. To coincide with its new name, the hotel also received a new look, with renovated guestrooms, redesigned public spaces, and a renewed focus on meeting the changing needs of the business traveler.

Playhouse Square Foundation owns the new Crowne Plaza, built in 1995 on the triangle of land at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Huron Road E, across from the city's theater complex. It's where cast and crew for visiting productions stay, a go-to option for business travelers during the week and theatergoers on the weekends.

The hotel's restaurant and bar area has been updated as well. Formerly known as the Encore Restaurant and Blue Bar, the two areas have been combined into one large dining and drinking area, on the first floor of the building's iconic circular structure.

The Ghost Light, open for breakfast, lunch, happy hour and dinner, offers a relaxed atmosphere with couch seating for cocktails and shared plates.

Misread this as 'Ninjas Market' and was about to run down the street to check it out - I'm slightly disappointed.

Perhaps this is the wrong place, but I was excited to see this on the Agenda:

2. Project: DF2018-034: The Statler Renovation *

Renovation to an existing 14 story mixed use building including interior renovations, exterior improvements, lighting & signage.

Project Address: 1127 Euclid Ave.

Project Representative: Katie Gillette, City Architecture

I think the Statler is sometimes overlooked but it is really quite a beautiful and significant, large building.  Imagine it cleaned up and with some nice exterior lighting!  As a future resident of the Halle building, my windows will face the Statler so I am all for this renovation ;)

It's a great building I lived in it for a few years soon after it opened.  I hope they eventually restore the ballroom to it's former grandeur.

^The inside is already pretty nice. A buddy of mine lived there during law school and his neighbors were all sweethearts. However, they were mainly Pakistani and I just remember every time I entered the elevator to the door of his unit I was overwhelmed with the smell of ethnic food. I guess that's one of the fun/annoying parts of apartment buildings, though - depending what kind of mood you're in.

Depends on your neighbors/food preferences. I had Hungarian neighbors and when I got off the elevator, I was overwhelmed (in a good way) by the smell of paprika, dill and coriander. But I still get that with my Ukrainian wife.

Has a new use for the ballroom and other unused portions of the Statler been identified yet? I seem to recall that Millennia was looking for ideas.

How about as a ballroom? There's always a need for interesting and beautiful venues for events.  If not that, I'd say a stage of some sort--and make it into a type of theater---it will 'play' well into the ever-growing theater district.

I'd actually heard it may become an incubator.

Pretty significant renovations especially to the E. 12th side.  Nice!!

Sweet!!!

Don't get me wrong, investment is great, but I lovedddd the old school, swanky feel of the Statler.

If you aren't following them on Twitter, do so!  They post regular updates of what they have uncovered.  It is fascinating.  So nice to see a building brought BACK to the way it was!

That's really cool!  I had assumed that the 2001 renovation had done all that, but I guess not.  I wonder what they will do with that speakeasy!

  • 3 weeks later...

The new lighting on the Statler Arms, I believe they will eventually add some to the upper white part of the building as well.

IMG_7553.JPG

So if the 925 Euclid redevelopment gets off the ground soon, we'll have that entire block under construction at the same time!

I'm glad they're changing the name to "The Statler". I wonder what the timeline of this project is? It looks like they still have a decent amount of work to do.

Their twitter account is pretty interesting actually, with things they are uncovering from decades ago.

But judging by the pictures, a loooooot of work remains.

According to a sign in a window, Sittoo's (a fast casual restaurant owned by Aladdin's) will be moving into the Keith Building at E 17th and Euclid. http://www.mysittoos.com/

Nothing seems to last long there. That space is pretty small.  At least the tower across the street will bring more people to that end of Playhouse Square.

Sitto's is NEXT LEVEL good. The one on Ridge in Parma is insane.

Good to hear.  I've never been there, but I really like Aladdin's.

And TIL...Taza and Aladdin's are both owned by the same people.  I had no idea.  I'm probably one of the few weirdos that actually likes Aladdin's better than Taza.

I cant wait to move into this neighborhood and try this!!

Sounds delicious, just hope it doesn’t take away business from Zaytoon on Huron which is also fantastic!

And Zaytoon is owned by the son of Al and Ghada — they of the fantastic Al's Deli at E 9th and Superior! I was planning on trying Zaytoon today for the first time. ?

But wait, there's more! This is in the Sterling Building, next to the space that had M Lang clothiers.....

^ Good news. Does anyone know whether this lot just west of 1255 Euclid  is a realistic development opportunity? It's not the worst thing in the city, but it's a pretty significant gap in the street wall.

Don't know, but I would really hope someone would redevelop 1255.  Man, is that an ugly building!

Well now that you mention, it is rather homely haha!

It's a shame that they gave it the mid-century ugly façade treatment. It used to be a handsome building.

The facade could be removed.  Something similar was done to the Bailey building in Lakewood.

My dream news in this thread would be to hear that PHS would go forward and do a 20 story vertical expansion of the Cowell & Hubbard building into apartments.

This lot is owned by the union club next door.  I've always thought they should sell the air/development rights in exchange for a few floors of athletic facility connected to the main building.

Had Zaytoon again today, excellent as always.

I think there's room for both of these places. Raving Med was not great though. If Sittoo's food is comparable to Aladdin's it should do well there.

I saw a video interview with the Union Club President who said that the intended purpose of owning the lot next door was to help facilitate its development, although none is imminent.
