I saw a video interview with the Union Club President who said that the intended purpose of owning the lot next door was to help facilitate its development, although none is imminent.

Translation: We own that lot to make sure we can choose who builds next to us

Don't know, but I would really hope someone would redevelop 1255.  Man, is that an ugly building!

Can confirm, I work there. When telling people where I work, I usually just say 'that ugly brown building in PHS' and they usually know which one I'm talking about.

Anyone know if there anything left to the original facade?  I look right down at that ugly hole from my apartment... and the patched up wall that collapsed a few years back.  Anything is better than what it looks like now.  EDIT: Now that I am looking at it we can even add it to the glass block thread ... bottom center :classic_laugh:

It sure would be nice to wedge a tall building in there!

It used to be a part of the department store, Sterling Lindner Davis and looked like this:

Even one of those Pod Hotel types of development would work there.

The empty lot between The Union Club and 1255 Sterling Bldg was the original atrium building featured with the tree. This was  The Sterling- Welch Company building.  1255 was the original Higbee location on Euclid Ave before they moved to Public Square.  This building is what remains but all original details were removed.

Sadly to me the Sterling Welch building was even more unique than the 1255 Building with is large cornice, beautiful glass and metal overhang and inner courtyard.  Such a bummer it's gone.  Here are some photos including one of both buildings still standing and 1255 with its original facade.SterlingWelch16.JPG.8783b8f2087f9de5f5ef7f173d0ddd38.JPGSterlingWelch17.JPG.04ec69dbb0c996d4a12e250a4714746e.JPG3354210490_c7032f8473_b.thumb.jpg.d01f6f5dce0e717df44c0d0b48ba2f0f.jpg

So it looks like the dug out hole is the actual floor of the atrium and the grid pattern of 1255's west wall matches the old pier pattern of the atrium, except the back 1/3rd, which was probably added later to cauterize the rear retail spaces behind the atrium.  The western side of the atrium probably had shops standing above what is now the drive for the Union Club.

Looking at the last picture with Woolworth on the right, brings back a lot of fond memories for me.

Does anyone know what year that Woolworth's picture taken?

Pretty sure it was 1968 or 69.

Rumors are that offices on the upper floors of this 9-story building (Bulkley Building) including for Playhouse Square Foundation and Gallagher Sharp LLP (which has been in this building since 1924, two years after it opened), may be converted to residential....

What was the dime store that in the sixties was in the location of the Corner Alley?

Was that also a Woolworth's ? Kresge's ?

Woolworth's was the current House of Blues.  Kresge's was where Butcher & Brewer is now.

So in the sixties did we have 2 woolworths downtown?    House of blues and Euclid/E.13

Yes. I wonder where all the Cleveland Woolworths were located? I tried looking it up but got this instead.... https://www.woolworths.com.au/Shop/StoreLocator/QLD-Cleveland-2585?utm_source=GooglePlaces&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=GooglePlaces&utm_content=QLD-Cleveland-2585

The Woolworth's on E. 4th was around until at least the early 90s.

During high school I worked in the Woolworths at 1911 W25th St. I believe it lasted into the 80s.

Republic Food & Drink nears opening in Playhouse Square

Updated Feb 4, 4:51 PM; Posted 7:00 AM

By Marc Bona, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The old awning sign is gone, a mounted neon sign in its place. Republic Food and Drink is set to open next week in the space formerly occupied by Otto Moser's in Playhouse Square.

"It's a big transition," said Scott Kuhn of The Driftwood Group, which owns Republic along with Cibreo, Bin 216 and several other restaurants.

Scott Kuhn and business partner Chris Hodgson are putting the finishing touches on the 146-seat restaurant on Euclid Avenue, next to Parnell's Irish Pub.

------

Their attention soon will turn to the patio, which will seat 30 to 40 people, and down the road brunch could be offered when The Lumen opens.

That 34-story residential complex being constructed at Euclid and E. 17th Street has a target opening date of 2020.

"It's amazing what this district has become." Kuhn said. "Once the Lumen is open this is the most complete district in Cleveland."

That's a cool idea -- bringing TV stations into PHS. Ditto for radio stations. WJW TV and radio studios used to be located there, at 1630 Euclid -- in other words, where they used to be until about 1970 (see link below). Maybe they could be the ground-floor tenant in the Lumen??

There are 3 radio stations in the lobby of the Halle Building.  92.3, 98.5, and 104.

And WCPN-FM + WVIZ-TV across Euclid Ave. A little bit is good, more is better.

We could have more too. That’s the thing that doesn’t make sense. There are several media companies in the area that are in suburbs for no reason. Univision is in Parma. Like, really?! Lol. iHeart should be downtown. There really isn’t a reason for 107.3 The Wave to be in the suburbs. 3,5 and 8 aren’t moving anytime soon. 19/43 is basically around the corner. But there’s still a lot of media companies who should be downtown. And a New York style media district would be great for the city and it would create excellent synergy

Or maybe the local newspaper could move downtown. Oops, they are consolidating out by the Friday's and BW3 on Tiediman. ?

Some of this is contractual "shade".   iheart cannot be downtown due to Sirius.  I can't piece together all the details without raising questions.

I know prior to the gay games and discussed at the last NBA finals is that Cleveland/Cuyahoga County should build an International Media Center.  There were to be two named tenants, with studios and regional offices.  There would also and also office and studio space for Traditional TV, Digital content providers, news papers & magazines, International partners ie (NFL, NBA, Cleveland Clinic, CfDC, etc).  This space would also include street level studio and entertainment space for a local station similar to NBC Rock Center studio.  One of the local tenants would be welcomed as their current location could be redeveloped for better use.

No.  Probably wont go anywhere with all the media shake ups.

This would be a great downtown incubator development.

Not big news, but a Chase Branch is moving into the old M Lang Clothing and Cocktails location in the Sterling Building.   Additional foot traffic is always a plus.

Nice!  I will be happy to have my bank right across the street from me.

Stinks that it closed. Retail downtown is rough.

Also, will they have a time lapse for lumen when its completed?

Yup, as noted three months ago... ?

When the building was bought, the new owner was offered suits as a payment - apparently that was the agreement with the previous owner.

I don't think they were open for much longer after that.

Do I have this right?

Tremont place lofts could have been "Gospel Press"

The 9 could have been Cleveland Trust building, or Breuer tower, ....(or a hundred better things)

What is/was Athelon....I think I missed that one

Union Gospel Press.

Athelon is the old Cleveland Athletic Club

Am I the only one that likes the name "The 9"?

Simple and classy. They were going for a luxury-type theme.
