that looks amazing! thanks for the pics!

anybody try out the irish pub place next to Otto Moser's restaurant on Euclid?

^ The woman and I stopped there for a drink a month ago before a show. Bartender was nice. Proper Guinness pour but could have been colder. We'd go back if they served more than just snacks.

Is this finished? You can't even read the lettering.

Better not be or some sign maker has to go back to spelling class!

Traditional Guinness is room temperature.

Not true--I've been to the factory.  6-7C is what they recommend.

Somebody needs to tell Guinness that, because they suggest serving it at 42 degrees F, and the labeling on their bottles say to serve "extra cold". Most English ales were served at cellar temperature, not room temperature. Besides that, Guinness isn't English. :P

  • 2 weeks later...

They started foundation work for the gateway arch on Huron Rd today.

^Thanks for the photo!  Let us know how it looks when the dust clears (or snap another photo, even!).

PHS now has a lot of renderings on its web site that I don't think were shown in the PD's coverage, in case anyone wants a refresher on all the "experiential" streetscape elements that are in the works: http://www.playhousesquare.org/default.asp?playhousesquare=117&urlkeyword=News%20Detail&objId=329

I'm still pretty iffy on a lot of this stuff (especially the gateways and chandelier) but I'm still eager to see how it looks now that it's an inevitability.

Not a fan of the retro signage at al and iffy on the gateway, BUT I don't mind the chandelier at all I think it will add a classy touch to the area. I do think that downtown should switch to LED electronic boards instead of those Omni info boards we have now, it just looks 10 times better.

I like all the elements but am iffy on the chandelier, but I LOVE the lighting proposed for the Keith Building.  Don't think I've seen it before but that alone will be a vast improvement.  Will definitely brighten up the area and that end of the skyline since that's the tallest building in Playhouse Square.

Good to see. Thanks Johann

Snapped these on the way home yesterday evening.

This particular signage is definitely an upgrade fron the previous at this site and makes more of an impression from farther away.

Has Playhouse Square gotten the Keith Building's owners to agree to add lighting?  My understanding is that PS doesn't own the Keith.  Unfortunately.

I don't recall hearing anything about lighting for the Keith building either.  Is this happening?  It would be awesome if it is getting some multi-colored LED up lighting!

Apologies in advance if this was already discussed, but this was posted to Playhouse Square's Facebook page tonight:

BIG NEWS! Tune into Fox 8 News tomorrow morning at 8:15am for a big PlayhouseSquare announcement from our CEO and President! #excited #bignews #soexcitedwillprobablylosesleep

Any idea what this "big news" will be?

its 8:20.  This morning show is so unbearable, I'm not sure I can last

The announcement was about the big unveiling party the night of May 2nd.......They could have said that on social media!

^Unveiling of the streetscape enhancements?  I had a feeling this was going to be a "be sure to drink your Ovaltine" moment.

Are you thinking the "h" isn't there in "The"? Honestly, I think it's just because it's hard to read. At least from the angle in the picture.

Well, I thought the big announcement would be something like "Wicked is coming back to town!" so, eh.

This is why Euclid is shutdown between 13th & 9th

Personally, I think that chandelier looks gaudy and ridiculous...

It's the theater district. Sometimes theater is all about gaudy and ridiculous.

I like it. Liven up the street at night with something different for our foot traffickers

Me too. But I'm shocked that 82 percent of those voting at cleveland.com like it.

I think spending $4M of discretionary casino money on the chandelier is ridiculous.

^Isn't the 4 million contribution of public funds for the whole 16 million project...not just the chandelier.  I can't imagine that one portion of the project costs that much.

^^Yes fix the Bulkley cornice, and nix whatever it takes to make that happen. (sorry to keep beating that drum)

But since I dont believe cornice repair is going to happen by May (and, perhaps, not even in the foreseeable future)...Im all in for this stuff

Ooops- yes,  you are correct.  But doesn't change how I feel about that $4M. If a $12M wholly private budget meant losing the gateways and the chandelier, I'd consider it addition by subtraction even before spending the $4M on something else downtown.

For $4M you could hold a $10K raffle every Saturday night on Star Plaza for 8+ years and I guaranty that would attract more street life than adding the $4M to this project budget. Of course literally bribing people to hang out downtown probably wouldn't generate favorable buzz.

AMEN. Its overstated. GOOD. Cleveland needs a little bit of overstated swag instead of the same, vanilla Midwestern boredom.

Does anyone have a comparison picture of the old Playhouse Square blade sign compared to the new? Honestly, I love the new one and cannot even remember the old one.

+1

I think it is ridiculous as well, but Playhouse Sq. has done so much for the city, if they want a chandalier, fine.

It had me at 'it lights up'. I love it. An entertainment district needs to be just that, entertaining. I consider it a public art piece. Those are always subject to criticism.

^Yeah, putting aside the public expense, I'm increasingly on board with the chandelier. It's over-the-topness sort of redeems it.  After thinking it over, it's really the gateways and the old-timey clock planned for Star Plaza that I think are completely lame.  Trite and unimaginative.  Off the shelf stuff that you'd expect to see in any downtown, usually from some failed 1980s street-scape heavy revitalization effort. One of the things I like best about Euclid is that it's experienced as a continuous corridor, so I don't like the literal segmentation that the gateways impose.  If the theater marques, chandelier and new LED billboard thingies aren't enough by themselves to tell you you're in the theater district then this whole thing is a waste anyway.

It will have a major impact on the view when traveling down Euclid Avenue. I like it.

Some movie is going to want to use it while filming downtown.  Hollywoood loves a good 'swinging from the chandellier' scene.

I am sure this will cause a lot of detours when people see the chandelier in the distance in order to get a better view of what it's all about.

Sometime pointed out the other day to me that all the renderings of the chandelier appear to be at night when it's illuminated and that they fear that it will look a lot heavier-handed and more obstructive during the day. Not sure yet if I agree, but it's an interesting point.

I might be the only one thinking of this, but I'm wondering how the chandelier will be engineered.  We're talking about Downtown Cleveland- pretty rough wind in the winter time.  I've seen people literally blown off their feet while in front of the Justice Center in January.  I would hope that the chandelier is made to last (the last thing we need is pieces of it flying off during by high winds).

Both of these thoughts had cross my mind as well. Also, I can't help but wonder how it will handle the snow.

Regardless, I love it.

Hate to say it, but it will be tempting target for vandals too.

Everything will probably be solid, not "hanging" so that should remove any issues with wind. It will look like a chandelier, but it will not move or be built like one.

I have heard from a good source that the chandelier is definitely being engineered to withstand Cleveland's environment. It is being tested for wind and ice and will also have something to keep birds from landing on it.
