Does anyone know whats going on with the building on Euclid and E.13th? I've seen crews there for a couple weeks now, haven't had a chance to talk to them yet.

History will show that chopping up this theater is a mistake

History will show that chopping up this theater is a mistake

But it's not really being "chopped up." -- more like reused.  See w28th:

The Allen is not being demolished on the interior. All new construction is self contained and touches the existing historic interior finishes very minimally. Basically, if this new construction needed to be torn down in 50 years it could be done, and the old theatre could be restored to it's former configuration.

KSU's urban design collaborative moves to Euclid Corridor

CLEVELAND - Kent State University is celebrating the grand opening of the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CDUC) in its new location in the heart of downtown Cleveland.

Kent State’s CUDC is now located 1309 Euclid Ave., Suite 200, in Cleveland, placing the collaborative within PlayhouseSquare and directly on Cleveland’s refurbished Euclid Corridor, which university officials believe is a very attractive location.

Previous projects by the Kent State CUDC include conceptual designs for Public Square in downtown Cleveland; the Cleveland Rowing Foundation’s proposed riverfront facility; and “Pop Up City,” a project which seeks to turn vacant Cleveland spaces into havens for cultural and arts activities.

“Our new location is in the District of Design, which is the area in downtown Cleveland surrounding PlayhouseSquare, from East 13th to East 18th streets, envisioned to include architecture, engineering, design and planning firms and programs,” Collaborative director Terry Schwarz said in a press release. “We are a part of the steady, but accelerating, progress of the District of Design by becoming one of its new, key tenants.”

Thanks MurryHill, somehow I missed that.  Originally it seemed that the interior demo was more involved.

This is great stuff, thanks for posting. Maybe with this as an example other property owners will take notice and do the same.

This looks great.  Now if we could just fix up and find a tenant for the building between Cowell & Hubbard (now the KSU urban planning building) and the Idea Center.

So much better - it looks like a brand new building!

That's a former Woolworth Bldg, most recently known as the Haig Avedesian building for its last tenant --  a purveyor of Oriental rugs.

I thought they had received Ohio Historic Tax Credits for this but when I looked it up it appears as it was rejected for those. I also remember some years back that the ground floor portion was supposed to become an Irish Pub.

Anyway the bottom half of one of those plate glass windows shattered down to the sidewalk a couple weeks ago, and now it looks like the top half of that same window is about to go any minute.

Whoever is responsible for this building should really do a better job of securing those broken windows.

Yeah!  Gerbil tube demo is imminent:

Walk this way to PlayhouseSquare from the parking garage: bonus video

http://www.cleveland.com/onstage/index.ssf/2010/10/walk_this_way_to_playhousesqua.html

The garage, at East 15th Street and Dodge Court, just south of Chester Avenue, will be open, and PlayhouseSquare has devised a sheltered route from it to the theaters on Euclid Avenue.

Whew, thank goodness- for a second there I thought patrons would have to do the unthinkable and actually be outside for a few dozen feet.

EDIT, hmmm, looking closer, it seems patrons will have to be outside for a about 15 seconds.

EDIT, hmmm, looking closer, it seems patrons will have to be outside for a about 15 seconds.

If that.  Don't they just have to cross Dodge Ct?

But what on earth will all the rich trophy wives do??  It will be the end of the world for them!

(I'm being sarcastic.  I only say this because I used to date a guy whose mom was housewife whose husband made a good living, and since she loved the theatre so much, he donated a good bit of $$, and they had tickets and parking for like every show.  I think that's the only time I have ever walked through the gerbil tube, because it's the only time I've been privileged enough to park in the PS garage!)

Does anyone know if they plan on cleaning the side of the Hanna Building facing 14th?

When the new bridge to the parking structure is completed, does this mean people heading that direction will have to exit through the Allen Theater rather than the current hall where the gift shop is?

EDIT: I think I get it.  That routing is temporary until the atrium is complete, correct?

^I think that's right.  Not sure if it will be an "atrium" or just an internal passage though.

The triangle/flatiron building -- 1222 Prospect -- is now the Lucky Palms Cafe.

Looks just opened. No sign, just painted messages on the windows like "Internet", "Coffee Cafe", "open late", "copy, fax, print" and even "free food".

This is the building that was once Bottoms Up. It's on Prospect Ave. and just around the corner from the Hanna Theater.

I am completely unfamiliar with those.

It sounds like that's what this probably is.

Can't be. Council recently passed legislation outlawing them.

That was one of the first buildings we completed for the window art. Then it sold. If this "internet cafe" is what I have seen in Europe.....it can be a good thing....But not if it is what I see on S.R. 91 in Springfield Twp. (near Akron/Ellet neighborhood)

PlayhouseSquare stars in its own real estate revival

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Behind the marquees of PlayhouseSquare, a real estate machine is chugging along.

The PlayhouseSquare Foundation, which has revived historic venues and attracted Broadway shows and more than 1 million people a year to Cleveland's theater district since the 1970s, owns roughly 1 million square feet of real estate.

.................................

Today, roughly 30 percent of the foundation's revenue is tied to real estate. This week, PlayhouseSquare will buy a vacant building at 1317 Euclid Avenue. Within the next two months, it will acquire a building on East 13th Street for Cleveland State University's theater, dance and arts classrooms and offices for the Cleveland Play House.

By the end of this year, PlayhouseSquare will control most of the block between East 13th and East 17th streets, north of Euclid Avenue.

.....................................

"We're not aware of any other organization, particularly in the performing arts, that has taken this approach," Falco said. "It's just been an evolving strategy, as we have moved from renovations of the theaters to operations of the theaters to being a catalyst for neighborhood development."

CSU/Playhouse Square

Ohio City

CWRU/University Circle

Yes!

1. CSU needs to keep adding residents to their campus, that area is already seeing way more life!

2. In Playhouse Square area I would like to see more apartments/condos, but they have continued to improve the area.

3. Ohio City is continuing to get better stores and restaurants

4. And University Circle always has some kind of construction going on! Such a great area

Keep on sprucin' up my hood, guys!

1. CSU needs to keep adding residents to their campus, that area is already seeing way more life!

You aren't kidding. I am so glad CSU has decided to make itself less of a commuter school and more of a residential school. Having lots of young people living in the city has so many benefits that will have long-lasting implications even after the students graduate.

I'm hopeful these benefits will start to spread geographically to the west toward Playhouse Square which is still too quiet most nights of the week.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Honestly, PHS has the potential to be a premier residential district.  It has good bones for numerous renovations and plenty of "space" for new builds.  It's just a matter of building momentum.

And Star Plaza is a nice amenity for residents

^And those storefronts facing Star Plaza have some seriously awesome outdoor dining/cafe table potential.

I always think that when I walk past.

And I say it a lot but the stretch of Euclid Avenue between East 9th and East 13 has a ton of potential to be highly residential with retail at street level. Just walk it and you can see how much potential there is, its crazy. That would also pump more life into the playhouse square area.

^ Aren't the building(s) across from Statler Arms being turned into apartments?

Not exactly across. The building next to Statler Arms are but I believe those have been on hold for awhile now. I actually believe that this section is actually the most impressive section of Euclid. Unfortunately it is also the most vacant and dead part which takes away from the impressiveness of it

I almost forgot to mention, last week I believe, I saw the LED lights in the sidewalk on east 14th street on. They didn't seem to be that bright. Also it seems to me that from an angle you can't actually see the lights. From where I was, on the corner infront of Starbucks, I could only see a few of them and then they disappeared. Im not sure if those farther down were on at the moment because I didn't walk down further to look. Later when I passed again on the Healthline, I could not see any of lights. Either that angle hides the lights or they turned them off. Im not sure whats going on.

Are you blonde?

They were still installing sidewalk last week, and doing tests. I am not sure if it is fully up and running or not yet.

Thanks, I thought they might just be testing some.

Sorry if I'm straying off topic, but I think if the Children's museum were to move from UC, it should move to Playhouse Square.

We drove by every night over the holiday weekend on our way home.  The lights definitely seem to be pretty dim.

Not only dim, but also much thinner than they appeared in the renderings.

Future PlayhouseSquare theater education center gets final OK from CSU

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Chalk up another building for PlayhouseSquare, an acquisition that raises Cleveland's stature as one of the country's top towns for culture.  Cleveland State University trustees on Monday removed the final roadblock to a $30 million deal for PlayhouseSquare to buy the five-story Middough Building, which will become part of a preschool through graduate school arts education program unlike any other.

Greater Cleveland Partnership, COSE will move to PlayhouseSquare; Liggett Stashower relocating

Published: Thursday, February 03, 2011, 11:40 AM

By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Greater Cleveland Partnership will move its offices and 100 employees from the Higbee Building to PlayhouseSquare, making way for the first phase of a downtown Cleveland casino.

The partnership and the Council for Smaller Enterprises, a small-business group, will occupy 50,000 square feet on the first floor floors of a building at 1240 Huron Road. The move will take place by late spring or early summer.

Communications firm Liggett Stashower currently occupies three of those floors. The company plans to relocate to 39,000 square feet on the fourth floor of the Hanna Building by the end of this month.

http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/02/greater_cleveland_partnership.html

Didn't Liggett Stashower just move into 1240 Huron around a year ago?  They spent quite a bit on buildout.  Weird that they would move out so quickly.  Glad they are staying in the neighborhood.

Cleveland Play House gets edgy in 2011-12 season, the first at PlayhouseSquare

By Tony Brown, The Plain Dealer

Updated: Thursday, March 10, 2011, 2:21 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- "Ladies and gentlemen, Michael Bloom has left the building.

In spirit, anyway. And also in artistic direction, if you go by the audacity of the Cleveland Play House's 2011-12 season, which will be announced officially today."

http://www.cleveland.com/onstage/index.ssf/2011/03/cleveland_play_house_tweaks_ar.html

Tony Brown, the Plain Dealer's theater critic, actually wrote that article about the Play House's season.
