March 4, 20232 yr Okay, so not ideal for a pathogen lab(?), but what does the Clinic want after soooo-many unfriendly builds have gone up in a row that there is truly no excuse, and and the city has finally had it? 'Good opportunity here for C.C. to offer - "Okay, so no street retail here, "but in exchange we're going design the exterior of the building appear at-least less hostile, and to do X" on whatever other building(s) might help the campus feel less cold, insular, and anti-community than is currently perceived by C.C.'s neighbors. March 4, 20232 yr Did everyone read the article? It is, I think, the first time I've ever heard the Clinic so open and engaging about how their construction is perceived by the public. Unless I'm missing something there is constructive dialogue going and the Clinic said they are using these criticisms of their designs to make changes. This is all pretty great, right? The only problem I have is this is the kind of healthy interaction that should've been happening 20 years ago.

Yea, I really think it can and will be more of a design thing than a programming change where suddenly you’ve got ground floor retail on floor one facing the Main Street corridors. Who thinks of a hospital as a place for shopping? But a gift shop is a natural - or a cafe that can change the curb appeal dynamic and be very functional for workers and visitors. And the building design itself could improve to be less - um - institutional. Edited March 4, 20232 yr by CleveFan

Anybody got a clue how much this is? It's funny to me that they don't say the number. I'm wondering if it's so low that the UAE is embarrassed by the number or so high that the Cleveland Clinic is embarrassed by it...
March 9, 20232 yr An institution like CC is always going to place the needs and desires of its global customer base over those of the surrounding neighborhood. Particularly one that elects people like T.J. Dow. Yes, I know there's something cyclical about that. But let's be real, they could have expanded in Mentor or Avon. They may be high handed and aloof at times, but imagine the city without them.

Uninspired dehumanizing buildings serve neither the "global customer base" nor the community. - It's not a zero-sum game. C.C.'s global customer base isn't interested in Avon.

August 16, 20231 yr This is what creative preservation looks like (Skip to the 20 minute and 30 second mark). Minneapolis had a sears department store that looked eerily similar to the one Cleveland clinic tore down recently. Instead of tearing theirs down they repurposed it to an active market space. That would’ve done wonders down by the Clinic. Reactivating an area that is so closed off. It also ties into a discussion we were having in another thread about Cleveland tearing too much down from our past and how cities like Pittsburgh (and apparently Minneapolis) do better and repurposing their past.
