Okay, so not ideal for a pathogen lab(?), but what does the Clinic want after soooo-many unfriendly builds have gone up in a row that there is truly no excuse, and and the city has finally had it?

'Good opportunity here for C.C. to offer  - "Okay, so no street retail here, "but in exchange we're going design the exterior of the building appear at-least less hostile, and to do X" on whatever other building(s) might help the campus feel less cold, insular, and anti-community than is currently perceived by C.C.'s neighbors.

Did everyone read the article? It is, I think, the first time I've ever heard the Clinic so open and engaging about how their construction is perceived by the public. Unless I'm missing something there is constructive dialogue going and the Clinic said they are using these criticisms of their designs to make changes.

This is all pretty great, right?

The only problem I have is this is the kind of healthy interaction that should've been happening 20 years ago.

Yea, I really think it can and will be more of a design thing than a programming change where suddenly you’ve got ground floor retail on floor one facing the Main Street corridors.  Who thinks of a hospital as a place for shopping?  But a gift shop is a natural -  or a cafe that can change the curb appeal dynamic and be very functional for workers and visitors.

And the building design itself could improve  to be less - um - institutional.

If they can’t figure out how to keep dangerous viruses and bacteria in the specific parts of the building they’re supposed to be, that seems like it a pretty big problem whether or not there’s a public interface.

It IS a big problem; it can be managed, but there's no need to add risk and make it more complicated. Think Wuhan Institute.  I agree with @Htsguy that the CCF campus has many better sites to work on.

Guys, I think the Clinic has qualified people to worry and pontificate about this kind stuff so we don't have to lol.

Why take the risk of mixing plumbing and air handling systems?  And if they are totally segregated, you might as well have two buildings. It's not worth the risk.

They’re likely to be separate anyhow, just for billing purposes. $$

the problem is they use the same rationale for every building they've ever built

UAE sheikha makes "transformational" gift to the Cleveland Clinic for the Global Pathogen Center. Anybody got a clue how much this is? It's funny to me that they don't say the number. I'm wondering if it's so low that the UAE is embarrassed by the number or so high that the Cleveland Clinic is embarrassed by it...

Maybe they’ll use some of that to improve the design a little..

An institution like CC is always going to place the needs and desires of its global customer base over those of the surrounding neighborhood.   Particularly one that elects people like T.J. Dow.

Yes, I know there's something cyclical about that.  But let's be real, they could have expanded in Mentor or Avon.   They may be high handed and aloof at times, but imagine the city without them.

  1. Uninspired dehumanizing buildings serve neither the "global customer base" nor the community.   - It's not a zero-sum game.
  2. C.C.'s global customer base isn't interested in Avon.

I'm not sure if this is cleveland clinic or hough...  but I think there were houses on 89th and cedar...   whatever was there is gone, and I don't remember reading anything about what's going in that location...

Look in the background for your answer, it's definitely part of the growth of CC.

@lockdog Are you sure that isn't 89th and Carnegie? If it is, that's the Clinic's new Neurological Institute.

Yeah, I know this is a development thread. Maybe historical context could be incorporated into whatever eventually goes there.

Wait that brick house on the right was in perfectly good shape. I really wish the Cleveland Clinic wasn’t allowed to tear some down until their plan was at least shovel ready.

For those who couldn't watch, just thought I'd post the updated rendering (corner of Cedar + 100th) of the Pathogen Center from CPC today:

Neuro Institute received final approval and Pathogen Center also received final approval with the condition that they try and condense the two mechanical floors on the top where possible.

Both were originally planned to be six stories. The east building was reduced to five and the west building to four.

After watching their presentation, this building can hopefully set the precedent for CC moving into the future. A focus on integration of the surrounding community will really activate that street and if successful, it should be the standard going forward.

Really wish they would’ve pushed all this over one block east. That corner surface lot at 105 & Cedar shouldn’t be there.

What’s going on across the street where the construction fencing is up? I don’t remember that fence being there last week.

This is what creative preservation looks like (Skip to the 20 minute and 30 second mark). Minneapolis had a sears department store that looked eerily similar to the one Cleveland clinic tore down recently. Instead of tearing theirs down they repurposed it to an active market space.

That would’ve done wonders down by the Clinic. Reactivating an area that is so closed off. It also ties into a discussion we were having in another thread about Cleveland tearing too much down from our past and how cities like Pittsburgh (and apparently Minneapolis) do better and repurposing their past.

I believe it’s in part of the site of the Global Center for Pathogen Research and Human Health labs.

Cleveland Clinic unveils next phase of Innovation District

By Ken Prendergast / September 28, 2023

In the midst of a global pandemic, state, local and Cleveland Clinic officials in 2021 announced the Cleveland Innovation District to expand health care research. Today, as part of that initiative, Cleveland Clinic unveiled the first phase of its expanded research facilities and announced plans to launch major construction of two new research buildings. The state-of-the-art facilities will be dedicated to scientific investigation and will significantly increase laboratory research space on Cleveland Clinic’s main campus.
