That show was OK. Yea, I can see the new heart center looking like their sets.

I walked through the new lobby the other day... its HUGE! Sort of reminds me of the movie Gataca or something else....

Emperor Cosgrove: [in the throne room, Luke is watching the Imperial fleet attack the Trans Fats from the huge throne room window] As you can see, my young apprentice, your friends have failed. Now witness the firepower of this fully ARMED and OPERATIONAL battle station, er, heart center!

[the Emperor hits the comlink switch on his throne]

Emperor Cosgrove: Fire at will, Commander!

Dr. Roisen: [in the Heart Center's firing room, a group of hooded Clinic Doctors starts priming the Heart Center's superlaser - a device so advanced it can be trained on capital ships, such as the Rebel transfats. A series of tones signify that the weapon is ready] Fire!

[a second gunner hits a switch, and a huge laser beam roars down a firing shaft. The outer surface of the Heart Center shows a huge laser dish start to develop, and then a titanic laser beam moves out from the Heart Center's superlaser. It hits the Trans FatCalamari Cruiser 'Liberty' and vaporizes the huge carrier in less than a second]

I'm sorry I can't help myself sometimes.

They have been landscaping the hell out of the Clinic's allee the past week.  I will take pictures for you all tomorrow.  It's looking pretty sweet.

Can't wait... Thaks Ipsilon.  Sometimes I get so immersed in downtown I forget about eveything going on out there.

Out here?  Are we lowly UC people in BFE to downtown workers or something? :-D

I've lived and worked downtown so long now that it has become the center of my universe.  I pretty much only leave to play golf and visit my mother... and ever since Euclid has closed down by the clinic I'm forced to get off around 82nd.  I have no idea what's going on there any more.

Eh, I was just giving you crap.  I've been on Case's campus for so long now that when I finally get out of here in 3 years, it's gonna be really strange....

I live downtown and work in UC.  It's the best of both worlds!

One of these weekends, I have to go around Downtown (and UC; why not?) and get as many photos as I can to post at Cleveland Rising.

It's an exciting time in all directions in Cleveland. :)

Cleveland Clinic: the happiest place on earth. :)

I'd like to.  Right now, it's still cheaper to drive.  HOWEVER, I just got moved to Mt. Sinai for parking, yesterday, because, apparently, the Clinic stopped using the Temple lot in November and didn't tell me.  After getting yelled at by Temple security and Sight Center security within a matter of two weeks, I finally talked to parking services and found all this out.

So, I may just take the bus so I don't have to walk a (literal) mile.

sounds like someone's going to be using the Euclid Corridor

He's not the only one - I'll be making the switch from the Red Line to the Health Line (I think) as I'm in the same boat.

Ipsilon, I would love to know how you're saving money by driving!

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

A bus ticket would cost me 4 dollars a day.  Driving from W. 9th to E. 101st and back costs me an estimated $1.32 in gas (based on the fact that I average 27 mpg in my Ion).  I did get in touch with RTA like you suggested, KJP, to find out about the Cleveland employer plan, but it's more of a payroll deduction, and it doesn't sound much cheaper than just buying a pass every day.

The lot I park in is free, so that's not a factor.

Others have mentioned factoring insurance and things like that into the cost, but it's not like I'd be getting rid of the car, so that seems pointless to me.

So, in the end... $1.32 < $4.00.

I'm still going to use the Silver Line, though.  And, I'll promote the hell out of it to everyone I meet.  No worries there. :)

I don't want to be responsible for taking this thread off-topic, but consider this:

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.......

Thanks; I'll look at that when I have more time.

I lied to all of you.

I forgot my camera, today.  I'll take pictures tomorrow.  I promise.  :(

Just for clarification, is the Cleveland Clinic allee  (and its trees) off limits or was it just the banter you're putting a stop to.  (I really am interested what type of trees the Clinic chose)

Yesterday really would've been a great day to take photos.

I did take some, but they're through a window and, you know, it was gray and rainy outside, but it'll still give you an idea of how the allee's coming along.

The circular entrance...

A closer shot of the landscaping...

More entrance...

Progress on the reflecting pools...

More trees lining the side of the 93rd Street Garage (JJ)...

Pouring the platform on Euclid (also, so you can see how the allee blends with Euclid)...

It seems to mesh pretty well...

These next shots are taken from the Chester end of JJ (aptly called JJ North).

The North end of the Allee isn't quite as far along...

This view would be great if it were a nice day...

As would this one...

This thing was chugging along while I was taking photos...

That's all I've got (actually, Strap, I got a close-up of the trees if you want to see it; it kinda sucks).  I'll update when more landscaping has been done and it's actually nice outside. :)

^Awesome, thanks for taking all those pics and posting the links- that is one massive landscape project.  I'm really eager to walk it when construction is finished and to see how it evolves as the plantings take hold.

And thanks for the tree shot- looks like red maples.  For anyone into street trees, check out this great Ohio State street tree evaluation project website: http://ohioline.osu.edu/b877/index.html

Maples indeed.  Interesting choice.  I thought CCF would have went with something more ornamental like Pears or Cherry trees.  I like the choice of adding something that will have some height but not monstrous.  I think these trees grow to about 50-70 feet.  Elms would have been my first choice, but Maples do just fine.  It will make the entrance look great in the fall.

Off-topic, but on the same note, does anyone know what kind of trees are being planted in the downtown forrest going right behind the Federal Building along Lakeside Ave?

They seem to be an extremely columnar variety.  At first glance, they looked quit like columnar english oak by their form,  which they use alot in Europe for allee's.

...if they let us up there.

I recently learned that I will be supporting the top five floors of the Heart Center (I do computer support...), which I'm excited about.  I mentioned, at one point, that I'd be able to hang out on the roof.  The general consensus is, that's probably not going to happen.

Based on how strict they're being about stuff in that building, I won't be surprised if employees aren't allowed up there.  We'll see, though.

Truer words were never spoken of life at the ol' Clinic.

Part of the upper floors will be the VIP patient rooms, which I'll also be supporting.  I'm hoping to get in the good graces of some of Ohio's elite... or an Arabian oil tycoon. :)

^Yes, the northern quarter or so of the 8th floor are the VIP rooms, overlooking the allee and points north to the lake. How do I know this, you ask? Because I was working for the contractor that was installing all the doors in them. They are pretty swank by hospital standards (white lacquered doors with all the fixin's) and no, I don't have any pic's. :-(

*Won't the Arabian oil sheiks be going to the CC's new Dubai branch now?

Yeah, but they'll still have to come here for some things, I'm sure.  Plus, most of the facilities over there aren't ready, yet. :)

I'll try to get pictures once I can get up there.  It won't be until September at the earliest.  That's when we start moving computer equipment.

Yessir! *salute*

More Clinic contstruction photos, on a much nicer day!

This is a better shot of the front door that I promised.

Hard at work...

Trees at attention.

The fountain has been filled...

Close-up of the fountain.

Reminiscent of Sea World?

Ready for water and grass...

Not quite there yet...

Signage is on its way up.

This is just a beautiful shot of the skyline on a summer day, from the seventh floor of the 93rd Street garage.  This one's a special treat for all of you.

Enjoy.

What is that "wading pool" in the midst of boulders?  :?

They are going to contract out the water-skiing squirrell, and he's just gonna ski in circles all day. :)

I'm pretty sure it's a fountain.  I don't think it's quite done, yet.

LMAO!!!!

Wait-- the donut-pool or the square pools with the boulders in them?

Wait-- the donut-pool or the square pools with the boulders in them?

the "donut" is an appropriate name for that pool.  We have a new name for it and it's not even complete.

I will find out more about the donut.  I don't think it's finished, but the photos I took don't suggest there's any sort of apparatus in the middle or around the permiter to make it more fountain-esque.

To be continued...

Maybe they will punish bad employees by marooning them in the middle for a day, "To think about what they've done".

It looks kinda sweet from above.

Hah!  Love it.  Don't tell Toby, though. :)

Agreed.

It can be the Clinic's designated smoking area.

We're on a roll!

Maybe they'll let it freeze over in the winter, give the squirrel a break, and let folks ice-skate around it?

...

Yeah, I just killed the volley.  Sorry. :)

More Clinic contstruction photos, on a much nicer day!

Wow, thanks Ipsilon for the photo update of Cle syd!  That allee is such a massive project.  Too early to tell how well the design hangs together, but the materials look to be top quality, so at least it won't look cheap!  I can't believe the Clinic actually sacrificed some of its precious, precious parking (the western edge of the lot in front of the Guesthouse)

But man do I hate the entry pavilion that was tacked onto the eastern side of the original Clinic building, facing the new fountain heart center entry.  Pure chintz.

Not sure if this has changed any, but this was from the 2004 Cleveland Clinic Magazine. I linked the pdf for it and it is stated on pg 26 of the pdf file.

THE ENTRANCEWAY TO THE HEART CENTER PAVILION IS

A CURVED GLASS FACADE THAT SITS ON A LANDSCAPED

PLAZA WITH A FOUNTAIN AT THE CENTER. THIS WILL

BECOME THE NEW MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE ENTIRE

CLEVELAND CLINIC CAMPUS.

http://my.clevelandclinic.org/Documents/Magazine/summer_04.pdf

That'll work.

It should also be noted that the water in the fountain is pretty choppy.  There may be jets in the donut that may shoot straight up at some point.

Only time will tell.

^Choppy waters? Put up a "Small Craft Advisory" sign. Problem solved.

from the looks of it, all the fountain needs is a couple of sea lions, and I'll feel like I'm back at the New York Aquarium...

  • 1 month later...

Oh my.  By the way, the new entrance looks to be just about finised (reflecting pools filled, trees planted, etc.) Can we get some pics from our Clinic-ites? :-D

yes.. ipsilon where have you gone?
